The Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack is used to greatly increase the number of flash firings of the SB-900 and SB-910 Speedlights, and also shortens the recycling time. It has a total capacity to hold 8 AA batteries, but can also be used with just 4 batteries. It can be used with any type AA battery, but provides the fastest recycling time when used with 4 quality AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries.
Total minimum flash recycling time can be as fast as 1.0 seconds when used with AA Ni-MH batteries, and the capacity per round of batteries is about doubled. Batteries must be in place in the flash in order to operate.

I will use this product for weddings and on location portrait shoots where a fast recycle time is vital. Testing the SD-9 prior to a portrait shoot this weekend I found the following while using NIMH low drain batteries:
* 47 full power shots at the rate of one every 3 seconds until the SB-900's thermal protection shut the flash off. This is only 2 more flashes then when using just the SB-900's internal batteries.
* 620 full power flashes at the rate of one very 15 seconds (not including periodic 1 1/2 minute stoppages while the flash cooled).
* The really good news is the recycle time is under 1 second for a full power flash!
The SD-9 seems a little pricey, but it appears well made and the fast recycle time makes the SB-900 a MUCH more useful tool.

The Nikon SB-900 seemed to eat more batteries compared to the other older Nikon flashes I own (SB-800, SB-80DX)...so I purchased the SD-9 Battery Pack (partly because Nikon would not approve using older battery packs I own like the SD-8A or the SD-7 on the SB-900). The very expensive SD-9 also eats batteries...just MORE of them...eight at a time!

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
I use the flash exclusively for bird photography. The recycle times are so quick I rarely, if ever, miss a shot. And I use rechargeable batteries for this pack which makes it more economical in the long run. Kind of expensive for basically holding a bunch of batteries though.

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
When I first received the product from my friends at B&H I noticed that it was very well packed and looked professional. Not much detailed instruction on how to use it but it's obvious.
Pros: This Battery pack allowed me to basically go all day during a wedding with only changing it once, out of fear of missing a moment. I would TOTALLY recommend it to my friends.
Cons: The cord would occasionally get in my way. Which is why I can't give it 5 stars. Now that may be just me getting used to having something hanging from my flash but I found the cord got in my shot when a short lens was attached. I quickly changed how the cord was being managed and it has not bothered me since.

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
I bought this battery pack to replace the cheap imitation piece of junk that I bought for a low, low price. It did not work at all, I believe it to be a total fake!! I thought that this one was way too much money, but as I said it works well. Sometimes its better to just bite the bullet and get the real thing the first time!

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
I like the extra flash capacity with shorter time between flashes. I use it with rechargable batteries and the cost is therefore only the intial outlay for the batteries.
I use my D90 handheld (no tripod) with the battery pack affixed to the tripod socket on the bottom of the camera. I wrap the extra cord around the base of the flash to keep it out of the way. The only problem is that the when attached to the bottom of my camera it does not screw down tightly enough to avoid the battery pack from slipping out of parallel to the base of the camera. I added a small piece of nonslip shelf liner between the camera and Battery pack and that took care of the problem.

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
I bought the SD-9 to couple with my SB-900 for a destination wedding last week. Knowing that this puppy would be pumping out near full power bursts, I was sold on the need for the SD-9, despite it being crazily overpriced in my opinion.
It worked fantastically. Paired with eneloop rechargeables, I had no problems whatsoever with recycle times or overheating. I think the only usage complain would be having some way to lock the cord into the flash. I once noticed it had pulled out slightly. Otherwise, you plug it in and forget it for all day shooting.
I can also see this being of great use for a mobile studio setup, i.e., using speed lights in the studio.
I'm probably restating what many have said before but this unit is seriously overpriced for a plastic enclosure for batteries. Nevertheless, it's the price to pay for such a lifesaver and clear business need.

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
One less thing to worry about. Knowing that your Nikon SB-900 is fully charge and ready to go, you can concentrate on your composition and taking the picture in the right moment. 90% attach to my SB-900. I use it on events, family pictures, sports photography and anything that flash will enhance my photos. TTL or fill flash, it is great and easy to use. No switches to operate, just plug it in SB-900 HV port and it's ready.

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
Greatly improves on the number of flashes, and great improvement on recycle times. Also does seem to prevent the SD-9 from overheating.
Could be an even better product with a few minor changes made. It's a bit bulky when attached to the camera body. The carrying pouch would be a bit nicer and easier to use if it had a clip rather than having to loop it through your belt. Most women don't wear belts, and tuxedos usually don't have belts when working this product at a wedding.

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
I have four SB-900's, and these battery packs are great. Load it with four OR eight batteries for efficiency or weight considerations. While there are cheaper packs and third-party packs with additional features, the fact that this pack is fully-compatible with the SB-900's and designed for use with them means that I won't have to worry about over-voltage issues or warranty service questions down the road.

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
Allows me to shoot faster and without going thermal. Can now do a full wedding without changing batteries. Expensive but I rationalized the purchase by the fact that like lenses, the SB900 flash and this product will move with me when I upgrade to my next camera. Would have given 5 stars if more fairly priced.

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
I purchased the SD-9 for both studio portraiture sessions as well as for the occasional event type shooting that I am asked to do. The SD-9 does just what is promised; delivers much shorter recycling time and extends my shooting considerably. I no longer find myself missing key shots waiting for my flash to recycle.

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
My first time using this was 4/29/11 it was in a club setting, very dark. I used it with rechargables batteries in it and regular in flash. I shot my D-700 in contuious and the flash kept up with me the whole night. Recycle time was amazing, and fast, I did not have to change either sets of batteries. I shot for 4 hours and never did the flash not fire. And it did not over heat either.
Now it is expensive!! But compared to the Quantum it's dirt cheap. So if your looking for some extra pops with your SB-900 get this.Oh.. Flash was set to Red Eye reduction.
I also was not crazy about the case that came with it. You have to take your belt off to put it on. I wore it on my left side because I had my camera slung on my right with black rapids RS-7. But I'm sure I can find a case with a clip so I can just hook it on my belt. But it is a well made case!! Just wish it had a clip.

Comments about Nikon SD-9 Battery Pack for SB-910 and SB-900 Flashes:
I bought the SD-9 to go with my SB-900. I have two SD-8a packs that go with my SB-800 flashes, and they work great. But the refined engineering of the SD-9 with its removable battery clip, more versatile case, 8-batteries instead of 6, made it worth the investment for me. I use it a lot in fast-paced environments like weddings, sports (I just finished photographing the Family Circle Cup), and portraits where I'm using high-speed flash sync at shutter speeds up to 1/8,000 of a second. This REALLY drains the power out of the flash and having the extra power of the SD-9 is a huge help. Only downside is you can use the older SD-8a with the new SB-900/700...but you can NOT use the new SD-9 with the older SB-800/600 flashes.

If you own an SB-900, you should be using Nikons SD-9 pack. Period.
Excellent power usage, recycling time is FAST! Dont waste your money on cheap imitations trying to save a couple of bucks. Nikons pack costs more for a reason. Great build quality, absolutely reliable, and did I mention how FAST it recycles? Great battery pack for those that need it.
