I did not need this item.However after reading reviews on the D700 with the SB900 I thought it might be safe to have this on board. I don't wan't equipment problems while I am working. So the guard is now on the SB900.
One problem is that I have a D300s and a D3s body. That means I well have to remove the guard from the SB900 when mounted on another body.
Nikon makes one each water guard, for each body. D300s/D700/D3s.
Yes! you guessed it. I had to order all three.
Now I well have to remember to change the water guard out for different bodies. Or buy more SB900's.

Hi, I brought it not only waterproof also to fix problem of Nikon d700's shoe. The problem is when sb900 attatch on d700, sometimes non-expected flashing occur. Nikon know it is critical problem of d700 but i cannot take repair service for it because my d700 was purchased in Korea so my warranty cannot cover my camera in the US. WG-AS3 is alternative way to fix I found. It make connection of both items(D700 and SB900) more strong. Since I use it, sb900 never show problem. Only for it, I really really appriciate it even it take my money! Think! When you use d700 and sb900. You have to buy WG-AS3 or you should go to Nikon service center ASAP. Thanks!!

** I think the appropriate price of WG-AS3 is under $15.

bought this purely for trying to remedy the D700/SB900
random firing issues that many nikon shooters encounter with this combo. Have to say it puts a damper if not eliminates the problem completely

Adding this product to my gear bag makes my SB-900 flash unit look more complete attached to the D700.It covers the metal rails quite well and makes the flash look like it was made just for the D700.Haven't tested spraying water on it but it does appear that the WG-AS3 covers every small crevice between the two quite well.Sturdy, firm but slightly flexible rubber material.Molded without defects or frills.Does what it claims to do but for [$], I think it is overpriced. Personally I would have liked to see the AS1, AS2 and AS3 come free with the SB-900 considering how much the thing costs.If you're concerned about looks and better water resistance, go for it. Otherwise wait till you can find a used for $7.
