I am very pleased with my 430. After doing my own research i decided that i would be better off with the 430 over the 580 as my first external flash. I had a borrowed 580 for the first week of ownership with the 430 and did extensive comparison and dual flash experimentation. As well as two jobs; engagement photos and a dinner party.
The 430 is clearly not as powerful as the 580 and this is noticeable when bouncing light off a distant ceiling or in overly large rooms. (That is not say that the 430 is weak because it's not! It's just that the 580 is very powerful.) I was shooting a dinner party in a large stone mansion that was very dark. The photos with the 430 were a bit dimmer than those taken with the 580. The comparison photos were all using indirect lighting; i had the flashes pointed up to reflect the light off the ceiling. So if i were to do a lot of this type of shooting i would want the 580 but since i don't i cannot justify the expense. The only other significant difference between the two flashes for me is the wireless capabilities.
The 430 is a wireless slave only. But since i had a borrowed 580, which is capable of wireless slave and master, i had to try out the wireless capabilities. In less than 45 seconds i had figured out how to set the 430 as a slave and was taking two flash photo's within a minute after deciding to try it!
Also, i should note the durability of the 430. I neglected to lock it onto a tripod when using as a second flash and it took about a four foot tumble landing right on the head on ice and it continues to work just fine!
I also find the weight difference between the 430 & 580 to be surprising. The 580 is downright heavy. Even when i had both to use for a week i preferred the 430 most of the time just for the weight.
Like any speed light the 430 is prone to washing out when pointed directly forward if the subject is too close. I plan to try out some of the after market defusers for this. But for now, i generally point it up and use indirect lighting.
As many have said before me, the 430 is a great starter flash; powerful, easy to use and a bit less expensive than the 580. If/when the time comes that i require a 580 for certain tasks the 430 will probably remain the primary flash for general purpose. It is lighter and powerful enough for most situations. I should also mention that E-TTL II rocks! If you don't know what that is read about it before you buy any flash. The 430EX-II is a great flash that should not be underestimated.

Bought it along with 7D as it has wireless transmitter, thus no need for 580ex.
Everything works as expected, besides the white wall test. On wider zooms (27-50 equiv) it is very uneven, compare to Sigma 500 DG; has significant fallout on sides and shoots higher, thus at distances < 10 feet bottom of the frame is getting significant and sharp fallout too.
Diffuser helps, but what is the point?
Tested with 7D and EFs 17-55 f/2.8 lens.

Good product, great service and fast delivery. The only issue is that I used to all Canon products are made in Japan but this one was made in China.

Comments about Canon 430EX II Speedlite TTL Shoe-Mount Flash (Guide No. 141'/43 m at 105mm):
Definitely glad I went with this one over the 580EX just because of the size. This flash is already bigger than I thought, and the 580 is even bigger apparently. The 480EXII works great. My only beef with it is the buttons are kind of hard to press on the back. Other than that, it's great so far.

what a difference between the built in of the 60D and the 430ex ii. I have been experimenting with the ETTL vs. high speed sync + ETTL for fill out doors. I am leaning towards staying with just ETTL all around. Worth the price which included the rechargible batteries.

I use this unit as a fill or back light in my home studio. This unit is light weight, powerful, responsive and is well built. Something i would like for Canon to change about it in the future is the power setting buttons. Initially, putting the right amount of pressure in order to change its settings can be challenging but besides that, it's a great unit.

I really like the flash works as expected and very quick TTL response.
Just wish the buttons on the back were a little easier to push/select. They are a bit too tiny.

Comments about Canon 430EX II Speedlite TTL Shoe-Mount Flash (Guide No. 141'/43 m at 105mm):
I use this on my Canon 40D whenever I am shooting indoor/low-light portraits. It is a huge step up from the built in flash, especially when using bulkier lenses (the built-in flash can often cast a shadow with wider-angle lenses).
For how much it cost and how effective it is, I have no complaints and would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a more effective flash than the built in flash on Canon products.

This is the first flash unit I have bought, I decided to go with this one due to the size. I wish it had the master slave capabilities, but I will eventually get the 580EX II so I can control this unit with that one. The unit is a little heavy at first, but not unmanageable, it takes some getting use to. The difference in my images is amazing. I prefer to shoot out doors but wanted this for when I am forced to shoot indoors.

Very powerful for a small package. Bought it as a 2nd flash for my 580 and so far is it everything I expected. Gives me two flashes that will work wireless from my 7D without buying anything else! Yeah that has it's limits, but for now I can deal with it.

Comments about Canon 430EX II Speedlite TTL Shoe-Mount Flash (Guide No. 141'/43 m at 105mm):
It's a great flash, got it mainly for off-camera use indoors and fill flash outdoors. I haven't tried it outdoors yet but it works well with the Canon 7D's built in remote trigger. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that when it is off camera it needs to be put in slave mode - which results in an annoying red blinking light on the front of the flash. This is very distracting for me and my friends/family who I'm photographing.

Comments about Canon 430EX II Speedlite TTL Shoe-Mount Flash (Guide No. 141'/43 m at 105mm):
Love this piece of equipment. Not the most powerful of Canon flashes but still has a good amount of power. Disappointed there's not a built in white reflector and the buttons are set deep so they're a bit hard to press, but those are just cosmetic things and can be dealt with. It is light-weight and small, which I like better than some of the bigger flashes, also has a fast recycling time. Overall a handy tool and not regretting my purchase!

I've only been experimenting with the 430EX II for a week or so, but have been impressed so far. It has a good balance of features for the price. I only wish that Canon would have given the 430EX II the ability to be a master flash like its bigger brother. Overall though, it was a good investment.

A must own for everyone who has an entry DSLR. This is a great fit if you're an entry to mid-level photographer. If you're a pro, go for the 580. At the same time, whenever you're ready to make the move to the 580, this flash acts as a slave so you're not wasting your Benjamin's at all. I love this flash and best of all, I love the PRICE!! Can't be beat. I'm also very pleased with the BH Customer Service. From the product to the service, I'm a 100% satisfied.
