The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Digital Camera records images at a resolution of up to 10.1 megapixel and incorporates a premium wide-angle LEICA lens with an 18x optical zoom and a focal length range equivalent to 27- 486mm, ideal for tight indoor shots and long-distance action photos. The camera's lens incorporates Panasonics MEGA O.I.S. Image Stabilization system, which helps to prevent hand-shake from creating a blurry image. The camera also provides an Extra Optical Zoom of up to 32.1x, and a macro capability that allows you to shoot subjects as close as 0.4" (1cm) with a Tele macro that gives you great macro shots with beautiful, softly focused backgrounds. The 1/2.33-inch CCD image sensor is a bit larger than most others in this class of camera, providing dynamic high resolution images.
The enhanced Intelligent Auto Mode (iA), with the AF (auto focus) Tracking function, makes it easier for photographers at any level to shoot sharp, well-focused photos, even when the subject is moving - making it ideal for action shots. The AF Tracking technology also improves Face Detection (up to 15 faces), by providing continuous adjustment of the focus and exposure, even if the face is turned away from the camera. Other iA technologies incorporated in the DMC-FZ28 include Intelligent Exposure to prevent photos from being under- or over-exposed even when shooting in dim lighting, or backlight conditions, Digital Red-eye Correction, Intelligent ISO, which automatically changes the ISO setting and shutter speed for blur-free photos, the Intelligent Scene Selector that automatically selects the appropriate scene mode based on the image being captured, plus many more convenient and useful functions.
The high-performance Venus Engine IV supports fast response times, allowing the camera to shoot 2.5 shots per second at full resolution and up to 13 shots per second in High-Speed Burst mode. In addition the cameras processor reduces image noise and allows for High Sensitivity of up to ISO 6400 - a powerful feature when shooting in extremely low-lit situations. The DMC-FZ28 also is equipped with a 2.7-inch high resolution LCD and a high resolution electric viewfinder to provides flexibility in framing and reviewing your shots.
The DMC-FZ28 also features High Defintion (HD) video capabilities with a resolution of 1280 x 720p at 30fps. Still photos can also be shot in a 16:9 aspect ratio for optimal full-screen viewing on a HDTV. You can even enjoy watching videos in HD quality and view still images by connecting the DMC-FXZ28 via an optional Panasonic component cable (DMW-HDC2) to any HDTV display. Plus you'll get Panasonic's SILKYPIX Developer Studio 3.0 SE Software, which provides for easy editing and developing of your cameras images.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Digital Camera (Black):
I received this camera as a replacement for a six-year old Canon Powershot. Great improvement!! Broke the camera in on a three-week trip to Hawaii where is was easy to use, took great action shots of kids, terrific sunsets, etc. I need to learn more about using the settings besides iA but look forward to that. My *only* complaint on returning home to download pix to iPhoto is that iPhoto won't recognize the RAW format (which most of the awesome sunset pictures are in). Going forward I can either not shoot in RAW or figure out one of the many workarounds, but it's disappointing. In an ideal world, this camera would have a ring focus function around the lens, but I don't miss it that much.Overall, great camera for an amateur like me, good buttons/controls, nice screen, I like using the optical view finder too -- looks like I'm cooler than I am!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Digital Camera (Black):
I am a DSLR shooter who wanted a point-and-shoot for travel, around town etc. for those times I did not want to lug around a huge camera bag or heavy camera-lens combo. I wasn't willing to give up on some of what I've come to expect from a good camera ... RAW format, exposure and flash compensation, manual options and the like.
I was hard-pressed to find a point-and-shoot that would let me feel like I was using a DSLR, and was delighted to find the Lumix DMC-FZ28. It is everything I could ask for and more, complete with superb Leica lens, broad focal range, and easy to use conrlos that afford me many options. It is feather-light, and suits my purposes perfectly.

When this camera arive and I put my hands on it for the first time, my first impression is that the camera is much more lighter and smaller than a SLR camera. This is a great quality for a amateur photografer like me.
The quality of pictures are great like I espect it to be.

Afer researcing this camera on Consumer reports and various online digital camera revieews, I decided to purchase it. It offers a bright LCD display, easy to use controls and and 18x zoom. This camera is a good choice for those wanting quality pictures, a good zoom range, but are not interested in purchasing a digital SLR camera. FOr recreational use indoors or out, this is a great camera.

A real improvement over previous digital cameras I've used. Precise, quick recovery, closeups are very sharp. Prints show sharp definition and good color. Nearly the flexiblity and control of an SLR, with the ease of a point and shoot.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Digital Camera (Black):
I'm not much of a photographer. I have a toddler and previously had a coolpix point-n-shoot, which could never actually capture my son in the frame, let alone get a pix of his smiling face. My sister is great with photos, so I asked her to pick one for me. She suggested this for a number of reasons: price point, she owned a previous model, the lumix lens, big zoom range, fast shutter speed (or something like that)--Basically that I should be able to take a pix of my son's face and I could zoom in on him to not disturb him. Big sis was right. I wish I could post a pix so you can see it! So far, I'm only taking pix in idiot-mode (automatic), but I was able to take "DADDY" (individual letter) pix for Father's day and some really cute pix of him eating blackberries for the first time. My 12yo Mother's Helper was able to take great shots with it too. My sister also recommends B&H, she has bought more than one camera at the NYC store; she raved about the sales staff. But I'm too busy (lazy?) to cross the bridge, [...] The camera works great for me. Hubby is happy with it too (technically, it was his father's day present ;). I really wish I could post a picture!!

I vacation often in Rocky Mountain National Park, and the DMC-FZ28 ultra zoom camera is perfect for beginner (with intelligent auto setting) or experienced person using custom settings who wants small camera bag for hiking but still have ability to zoom in on mountains or wildlife in even HD, and in RAW, JPEG, or both, as well as take movies by popping in 8GB or 16GB memory card.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Digital Camera (Black):
I am a former professional photographer.
Still miss my bags of gear and the quality photography they support but can not justify the weight and distraction for personal photography. I have been very disapointed by several compact class cameras (Cannon, Nikon) but have found a tolerable compromise in the FX28. Comparable or superior picture quality to other similar careras (seems limited only by sensor size), practical and rugged design, logical controls, manual controls when you need it, EVF for outdoor use in the sun and OK low light performance.
Still too big for a pocket but the combination of sensor size, picture quality and low light performance could not be built in a smaller package.
I do wish the on screen graphics where translucent rather than pure white (opaque) and the single shot and focus time could be shorter.
Great camera that I highly recommend but I will keep my eyes open for a smaller camera with a better sensor, better picture quality and more dynamic range.

So far I love this camera. I have used it for about 2 weeks so I am in the learning mode. It has more features than I know what to do with, but I'll learn. Those I have used are great. the large viewscreen and 18X zoom are great. The camera is very light that makes it easy to carry all day. No more neck strain due to a heavy load on the camera strap. It is easy to discover many features by pushing buttons. It is very intuitive. The picture quality is great. I would recommend this camera to anyone who likes to get close to their subjects without distubing the subjects.

I would consider it a great buy.. The intelligent auto is awesome!! the zoom is great for the money paid. The pictures come out great in low light just have to do a little bit on manual settings.
The LCD is a little bit deceiving. Other wise a great camera

Too many shooting options, but you can ignore most of them. I just keep it on aperture or shutter priority and don't use any of the scene modes. Intelligent Auto works pretty well most of the time too.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Digital Camera (Black):
I was looking to buy a camera for an upcoming trip abroad. Although I loved the DSLRs, I hated to get a camera that could possibly be bulky--after all, if I wasn't willing to carry it, how would I use it? I consulted B&H Photo via the chat feature on the website, and they narrowed down what I wanted right away (the Panasonic DMC-FZ28). Although I wasn't originally interested in a Panasonic, I was quickly converted within minutes of using this camera. Here's why:
1) Great point and shoot setting: of course very easy to use, but also takes a decent picture. With the intelligent focus and zoom, you can't go wrong.
2) Excellent control of manual settings: aperture, shutter speed, iso, manual focusing...everything an amature could possibly want in a camera without going DSLR. The manual setting possiblities are endless! It took me a little while to get used to the controls...but then again, I chose to learn on my own as opposed to paging through the manual (my fault, not the camera's!). Either way, once I start working in the manual setting, I can't stop.
3) Lots and lots of special settings!: Settings specially created for pets, beaches, parties, fireworks, outdoor sports, indoor sports...pretty much anything you could imagine! It takes the guess work out of determining what iso, aperture and shutter speed you should use without relying solely on the P&S setting.
4) Face recognition: Very cool feature (to me, at least!)
5) Anti-blur feature: This works great. Obviously it can't take out all of the blur, but when I tested it by gently shaking the camera, it worked!
6) Beautiful close-ups: This camera catches every detail in close-ups. I have a garden and I love to photograph the flowers, and this camera is superb. I haven't gotten great pictures like this since I used a film SLR...and I'd have to say that in general, these pictures are even better.
Now for a list of things that I don't like about it:
1) The controls were a little confusing at first (again, I only paged through the manual though, so it is probably my fault).
That's it--I can't think of anything else that I don't like about it. I absolutely love this camera and would recommend it to just about anyone. If you are very casual about taking pictures and you have no interest in manual settings (i.e. you take pictures at parties or at events), this camera might be a bit much for you. However, if you have interest in manual settings, but don't want to use them all the time, you will love this camera. This camera has the photo quality that I loved about my 70's film SLR combined with the simplicity of my digital P&S camera.

Image quality very good.
Very small for a camera with so many features, easy to carry but controls are unavoidably crowded together. I'm used to much larger cameras.
Focusing somewhat tricky.

I use to take landscape pictures during vacations. This camera has a very usefull zoom range from wide to tele. The lens has low distortion and a very good image stabilization. This is a camera for general use, thanks to the zoom range, image quality and not too big size.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Digital Camera (Black):
I purchased this camera for a trip to Disney and Seaworld with our kids. At that time, the Canon S1X and the Panasonic GH1 were not available. I would have purchased one of those instead because they have 1920X1280 full HD video. However the FZ28 does take HD in 720P 1280X1080 and is about half the price and has terrific value for the money.
The Ai mode is great, it sets the camera perfectly every time according to the conditions.
I really like the zoom with movie mode.
The burst mode is great, used it along with the 18x zoom to capture some great roller coaster close-ups.
No red eye in any of the pictures using the pop-up flash, that was my big concern.
Encountered a problem with the zoom actuator sticking. Sent it in for warranty.
The only negative thing for me is that sometimes in low light when zooming in or out there is a delay in the auto focus, very negligible though.

This is a great little camera with huge range. It's light and compact and inexpensive(for what it does) and has a decent grip. Controls and menus are easy, flexible, and fairly "intuitive". Image quality is outstanding, and it shoots RAW at half the price of the similar Canon item. Stabilization is ok, but not great. But it's still a point and shoot, with excessive focus lag and an electronic viewfinder (but at least it has one). It doesn't feel like a "real camera". Don't expect to shoot sports or wildlife with much success, despite the long focal length. And altho it has an extended ISO range, the higher sensitivities are pretty noisy. But for an informal walk around camera, its versatility, utility, and quality can't be beat.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Digital Camera (Black):
I was looking for a camera to take to just about anywhere but most hopefully for travel and backpacking.
This camera takes wonderful pictures for the price. It's wide angle and zoom are a good combination when you don't want to carry anything else. So far battery life seems pretty good, but when I am away from electricity for a week, I plan to bring more batteries
Don't forget to put up the flash if you want to use the flash. There may be a way to do it, but unlike smaller point and shoot cameras, the flash is not going to deploy automatically and therefore flash unless you release the pop up flash.
Until you pick up the camera, you may not notice that the viewfinder is electronic. This is probably good, actually, as you will see the exact frame instead of an approximation as on some cameras that have an optical viewfinder
This camera probably is not the most rugged camera out there. It is not weather proof, as you may note with many smaller point and shoots such as Canon's "A" line. Of course they do not mention that in the specs. I have dropped my old Canon A470 who knows how many times and it comes back shooting, well, until recently. I am going to be very concerned the first time I drop the FZ28. You know it is going to happen. Got dropitis? The Canon G10 might be a better bet. Unless you pick this camera up and play with it the specs don't mention body composition. That would be plastic in case you are wondering.
How to carry this camera without a big photo bag? Ho ho! It fits perfectly in a rock climber's chalk bag.
By the way, have recommended to two friends who have consequently purchased the same camera. It is a great camera for the price.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 Digital Camera (Black):
For an amateur photographer who has never had the time to learn beyond point-and-shoot style cameras (like me), this is great. Moving up to this size camera after several years of the most zoom I can get in the smallest package, the size and weight has so far not been an issue - and it's still smaller and lighter than anything with the same features. For catching kids in various sports pursuits, pets and wildlife doing their thing, seascapes and landscapes, all the automatic features crammed into a not too bulky camera makes this one shine. I especially like having a viewfinder with diopter as well as the LCD. We are headed to Africa this summer and the built-in zoom alone is great -- the ability to add another zoom lens makes it perfect without having to worry if I've got all the settings right. I have not tried the video, which is supposed to be good for a still camera, because I prefer a video camera for video and a still camera for stills. I do like to have the option, though, just in case.
