I purchased the Epson P-7000 so that I wouldn't have to worry about carrying around two dozen 4GB cards with me on a day or more of shooting, and for this purpose it serves its purpose well.
The P-7000 is unfortunately rather large; it's comparable to large "media" players like the Archos 7. The device measures a full 6" wide, 3.5" high, and 1.6" thick. When enclosed in the included protective case, the case itself takes up about the same size as you would expect a consumer digital camera + accessories case to.
The screen is brilliant and color reproduction is very nice. Comparing it side-by-side with my Nikon D300 preview screen, it easily blows the D300's screen away in terms of crispness, color reproduction, contrast and daylight visibility.
Controls are intuitive and responsive; the jog dial is a handy way to quickly scroll through your photos, and the RAW preview is snappy.
To unload photos from your device, you don't even have to use Epson's provided software; Windows XP and Windows Vista will natively recognize it as a removable hard drive, and you can simply cut/copy/paste folders and files on/off the device at your leisure. The CF and SD slots also show up as removable drives, so it doubles as a CF/SD memory card reader. It also has the ability to accept USB input from another device like a digital camera or card reader, so you can unload photos from other devices as well.
I'm giving this device 4/5 stars for several specific reasons:
1: Price. Epson is charging far too much for this, although I suspect the main cost of this device is in its screen. The device itself while nice, feels a little bit "plasticky" (but not necessarily "cheap").
2: Included screen protection: The P-7000 comes with a single protective film cover for the screen of the device, and it is unfortunately very easy to mis-apply. Even during my careful application, a small speck of dust became affixed to the underside of the screen protector, and as a result is now causing the entire top-left side of the screen protector to slightly peel up. It's not enough to be a deal breaker, but a careful search of both Google and Epson's website does not seem to turn up any replacement protective films for sale. It would be a good idea for Epson to sell these protective films in packs of 5 or 10.
3: Size: This unit is large...Much larger than it looks in photos. If you're expecting this device to be the size of an iPod or Zune, prepare yourself for a shock. The screen alone is the size of a 120GB Zune player, and of course the rest of the device is even larger. That said, it's still smaller than carrying a laptop or netbook with you on a trip where you're trying to travel light.
Those gripes aside, I am very happy with the P-7000. I would definitely recommend it, but only if you have the cash to burn and its description perfectly suits your needs. I would recommend visiting B&H's retail store and handling one (if available) to get an idea of the size and feel before purchase.

The p-7000 is a decent product but 1) it is expensive for what it is, 2) The drive size, for the money, is way too small in the context of today's storage standards and probably will become outdated as phot file sizes increase. In addition, the product literature states that the p-7000 is compatible with the .DNG raw standard, but this is not the case. With my Leica M-8, which uses the .DNG raw standard, the p-7000 will only enable the user to view jpeg files, therefore I must shoot in .DNG + JPEG. Besides taking up more SD card space, this makes reviewing, deleting and organizing your photos cumbersome and time consuming. For example, when deleting a photo, one must first delete the viewable jpeg file and then go back and find the associated, but unviewable, .DNG file and delete that seperately. Lastly, in terms of support, Epson does get back to you quickly, but with indifferent and incomplete answers from ill-, or little trained support persons who seem not to really know their own product. I would only recommend the product if one can ascertain, perhaps through contacts, compatability with your specific brand of camera.

Epsons P-7000 Multimedia viewer is a fantastic tool for downloading work in the field. No more worry re losing shots due to faulty cards etc. Easy as just download after shoot and check all is ok and move on.Easy to operate and compact. No more lugging a laptop around costing extra $'s in weight when flying.I could have got away with the smaller memory model but what the heck 160G is awesome.[...]

Comments about Epson P-7000 Multimedia Photo Viewer:
I often take event photography, and mostly carrying a few memory cards, it fills up pretty quick as a lot of things are happening.
This is a perfect solution for me to backup/store my pictures on the fly, I don't have to worry about filling up the cards, and the good thing is, I can just keep shooting while this device backs up my pictures.
Also, if you're on a long travel or holiday, this device is also great since its has large capacity, you can keep all of your trip's photos without the hassle of carry a laptop or a portable hard drive with you.

Bought this for long photography trips. I already owned the P-2000 but needed the extra storage space offered by the P-7000. This version is compact, has great screen resolution and faster down load times than the P-2000. Having two batteries works best because I'm not always near a power source. Good product!

This is not cheap but well worth it. I've seen the jobo and heard a lot of bad stuff about the memory kick. The epson is well built, has a brilliant display and is very intuitive, without even looking at the manual.

I HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF THESE AND HAVE BEEN MORE THAN HAPPY WITH THIS PRODUCT. I LOVE TO SHOOT ALL DAY AND BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD ON THE FLY. AT NIGHT TYPICALLY I WILL FIND THAT COMFORTABLE CHAIR TO EDIT, LIKE ONE WOULD DO WITH THEIR FAVORITE BOOK. THE QUALITY OF THE SCREEN IS EXCELLENT TO JUDGE SHARPNESS, EXPOSURE, AND COMPOSITION. I'M THINKING OF HAVING THEM AVAILABLE FOR MY CLIENTS TO MAKE THEIR PIC'S FROM.

I do photography for a non-profit organization. A good deal of time involves traveling by ship between between islands. I have to carry allot of equipment with me so any weight and/or bulk I can avoid is a good thing. I never delete files from memory cards during a trip and carried a computer as a back up.
The P-7000 solved both the weight and bulk concerns along with the screen being large enough for the client to view.
In the cameras I record RAW images on a compact flash and JPG on an SD card. Both can be backed into the P-7000.

Use this product to backup photos during weddings. Does exactly what I'd like it to do simply. Great large display and easy user interface. Only complaint is that it's sort of slow to browse through the images...however they are large files in it's defense.
Overall I'd highly recommend!

I used the P-7000 to store my pictures while on vacation to Egypt. There was ample storage space to record my pictures. It was very nice to see my pictures after a long day of shooting on a larger display of the P-7000. The only cavaet is the slow
transfer rate.

I bought this viewer so that I wouldn't need to drag a laptop along on a recent photo trip. I am so pleased with it! It can read a 4GB card in no time - with RAW files! Also backs up very quickly. Viewing is easy and very clear. No regrets on this investment.

Great for extra backup and making space on memory cards but not very good as a viewer. Details aren't that clear. Really had to wait till I got back to the home computer to make any critical determination of quality
