It features Nikon's high-resolution image processing engine and a dedicated high-performance processing chip that has been introduced to significantly accelerate performance on all levels. With a start up time of just 0.18 seconds and a shutter release lag time of approx. 80 milliseconds, the D80 delivers instant response, and provides continuous shooting at a rapid 3 frames per second, making action photography a reality and the camera a must have for photography enthusiasts.
Nikon's DX Format sensor and F bayonet lens mount design assures compatibility across the comprehensive range of AF and DX Nikkor lenses. The Refined 11-area AF System (based on Nikon's advanced Multi-CAM 1000 AF Sensor Module) ensures consistently fast and precise focus lock in various shooting conditions and Nikon's exclusive 3D Color Matrix Metering II ensures accurate automatic exposure control, even in the most challenging lighting conditions.
Packing high performance and high resolution into a slimmer, more compact body, the D80 also remains true to Nikon's commitment to intuitive operation. The size, layout and operation of all controls are designed for maximum ease of use. A large, bright viewfinder with large 0.94x magnification ensures the clearest view possible and a large 2.5-inch, 230,000-dot high-resolution LCD provides an ultra-wide 170-degree viewing angle from all directions. A RGB histogram display also assists when evaluating exposures with greater precision. And a user-friendly menu interface makes for easier operation and menus can be customized using the "My Menu" setting. Furthermore, exclusive in-camera image editing features, such as D-Lighting and Red-eye correction ensure consistently satisfying results and greater creative freedom without the use of a computer.

l am a very happy photographer because this camera has all the controls I need for beautiful compositions. This is a definite 5 star camera, for both beginners and and pros. It has all the control a D90 has minus the Video.

This camera gives you all the controls you would need to do professional imaging. At the same time it is terribly easy to use when lazy. I have always been a fan of flash exposure compensation, options for using different metering in the same shot to balance the image the way I chose, and this camera gives me those capabilities.

This camera has great features for the price. I bought this camera for my daughter and was pleasantly suprised when I found the images it produced were comparable to my D300. The Kit lenses were also a great value.

I love everything about this DSLR. Depth-of-field preview, LCD display on top are very nice upgrades from the D40-D70 models. Feels good in my hand, is made well, all controls easy to access while shooting. The VR on the lenses is awesome! I love the LCD protector on the back.

Comments about Nikon D80 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm VR Lens & 55-200mm VR Lens:
This is my first DSLR, and I am an amateur, so I am really enjoying the freedom of creative control that this camera provides. It feels really solid in my hands, and I have used it mostly with a fast prime to take indoor sports photos of basketball (a tough gig) and I just love it! The high quality of the high ISO settings allows me to stop action and get great quality to crop if needed later. The VR lens kit that came with the camera is a great value also. The only thing I have against it is the noise of the shutter. While I like the sound, it can get a little noisy if you are taking shots in a very quiet environment.

Comments about Nikon D80 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm VR Lens & 55-200mm VR Lens:
This is the first DSLR I own. For the price, it's hard to beat for what you get.
I used this camera for taking pictures around Charlotte at night, and the VR is indispensable for helping me stabilize the camera to allow for slower shutter speed. As a film camera user and p&s digital camera user, this camera and lens combo beats anything I've used before at night by wide margins.
Some might argue this camera is about 2 years old and has been replaced by the D90. However, its quality matches well with the D90 or any DSLR twice its cost and still delivers exceptional quality.
Focus is quite quick and smart as I have used it to track down moving subjects such as emergency vehicles and cyclists with ease. The quick 3fps burst makes tracking down fast moving subjects even easier.
I also did some casual portraits with it, and it is also very handy in that purpose.
Only tricky thing about using this camera (as for any DSLR) is to make sure all setting are set correctly for your particular shoots. The most important but often neglected setting is the White Balance (WB) setting. If the setting is wrong, it will cause pictures to have some very funky color cast and it will take forever post-production to correct such error.

I am an avid 'point and shoot' kind of girl...after about a year of saving $$ and researching cameras, I decided this was the DSLR for me. It seemed to pack a ton of features, great Nikon name and 2 lenses for a GREAT price.
Sofar I LOVE my camera. I have watched the video numerous times to attempt to learn more about all the features.
My only downfall is that the camera, given my lack of time to play, has a lot to learn...but I'm enjoying every minute.
This is a must purchase for all you out there still deciding!

I'm a professional journalist - print, radio and photography and I've been shooting with company owned gear for a number of years. It would be nice to have the features of the more expensive cameras but I didn't have a big budget and this set up was a great value for the money.
I like the Nikon interface, altho I miss some of the manual knob controls that the old D100 has - easier then using menues. I also miss the standard (non-electronic) cable release option - the new connection is a little tough to hook up and I haven't tried it in the dark yet. But I actually like the lighter smaller body/ profile.
The two lenses are adequate - took a little getting used the VR feature but I like it now. They are perfect to get going with while you dream of the lenses you want to add to your kit.
So far the D80 and the two lenses have performed like a champ. I've taken it skiing and done rapid fire driveby shooting of wildlife and done a few portraits and landscapes - its come through every time.

this has been a great entry into the DSLR world for me. the lens set that it comes with is perfect for starting out. It has helped me capture images of our two husky pups and the one husky adults.
My only complaint is you dont get any shooting information on the main lcd, its on the top lcd but you cant have it shown on the main.
Now its time for more lenses lol!

Easy to understand.
Just the right size.
One bad thing is that you can easily get carried away and start adjusting the exposure while the last picture taken is still in the LCD, then and all your're doing is shifting through photos. A recommendation (to NIKON) for this would be to NOT make the aperture and shutter speed dials the same as the photo shifter dials.

Experience level - used film SLRs for years, hobby photographer for my web gallery.
I have wanted a digital SLR for quite a while, but it never made it to the top of the list. My digital frustration with my Olympus C-5050 recently reached a climax and I decided now was the time to upgrade. The price of the D80 kit was too good to pass up.
My choice boiled down to either the Canon Rebel XTi or the D80. After handling both, I like the D80 ergonomics much better - Nikon has done a superb job of placing controls exactly where my fingers can comfortably reach - it all seems natural and intuitive.
I like the LCD display on the top so much, I don't think I would ever own a camera without one.
The weight of the D80 with the kit lenses is wonderfully light! I handled my friend's D300 and thought there is *no* way I would want to lug that around.
The 55-200 kit lens is a little slow, but I was well aware of the limitations of both lenses when I bought the kit. One of these days I'll buy a good ~50 lens, but for now, life is good :-)
There is quite a debate going on about the D80 vs. the D90. After quite a bit of research, I came to the conclusion that if price isn't that big of a concern, go for the D90. The D90 *is* a little better in some aspects. For my requirements, the D80 has *completely* met my needs of price and performance.

I am an amateur photographer, hoping to improve my techniques. The D80 is a wonderful camera to work with. The package lenses are great for a beginner and the vibration reduction option on each is very useful. My only negative is that the camera functions can be overwhelming for someone who isn't familiar with digital SLR's, however once you play with it for a while, it doesn't take too long to figure out how to use the many options it provides. I suggest this camera for anyone who will actually use the different options like Shutter Priority, Aperature Priority, etc and not just leave it on Auto. The LCD cover is great too!
