I wanted a camera that I could carry anywhere so I wouldn't miss any photo ops at social gatherings, vacations, etc.. (My primary Camera is Canon 1DMKIII. The SD880 has limitations and if you work within them it's a great little camera. I've found its best to fill the frame with your subject and not rely to much on cropping because alot of cropping will definately degrade image quality with "noise". I've found ISO's 100 to 200 to be the ideal range with ISO 400 being more noisey but correctable with the right software.
Start up time is very fast DIGIC 4 is nice. Battery life is also greatly improved. I would definitely recommend to friends.

My dissatisfaction with the Canon SD880IS all stem from really missing my old Fujifilm F30. That good old camera has the best lens/CCD of any point-n-shoot that I've ever seen. Even ISO1600 photos were usable. Everything was low noise. But [*] the two F30's that I've owned all crashed way before reaching 2 full years of use. Yes, I had liked the camera so much that after the first one died I bought another one to replace it.Yes, the problem with the SD880 is NOISE NOISE NOISE. Even at very low ISO I can see the noise everywhere on the picture. I tried going for lower pixel count but they are still very visible. If you want to buy this camera, make sure that you've taken a few photos and zoom them out in playback mode. It's only after feeding a photo through Noise Ninja that I finally breathed a sigh of relief.Noise problem aside, the SD880 is packed with so many neat features. I've set the manual white balance to be trigged by the printer button. All I have to do is to point the camera at the white ceiling, press the printer button, and the camera is white-balanced exactly for that specific lighting.Face detection works great, and I really like the TV - self-timer - Face detection combo: I hook the camera to the TV, put the self-timer on Face detection mode, press the shutter, and nonchalantly walk to the spot of my choice before turning to face the camera. The camera reads my face and multiple shots of me are made. This camera takes BEAUTIFUL indoor photos -- with a flash, that is. (The Fuji F30 had been able to take all sorts of great indoor photos without flash.) The Canon engineers have done a great job with post-processing to get such nice even lighting on indoor photos, especially with such a tiny flash.I take photos with i-Contrast off. In the playback mode, I can apply the i-Contrast as I choose. And speaking of i-Contrast, I find that the SD880 tries too hard to second guess what photos I want, and the photos tend to turn out a bit flat. The photos all improve tremendously when I use Picasa or Photoshop to deepen the shadows. This is especially true with indoor photos. The video mode is not so useful. There is no optical zoom with video. The camera fakes a video zoom by doing a digital zoom. Of course, if the video is already only 640x480, doing a digital zoom will get you horrendous resolution. So just pretend that there is no video zoom. The microphone on the camera is bad.The handling of the camera is very good, and it is a beautiful looking gem. And I hope that it[*] will at least buy me more years than my two terrific but unfaithful Fuji F30's. Now if Canon were to come up with a 28mm F2.8 camera that had the same CCD-sensor philosophy and the manual controls as the F30 (fewer Megapixels for superb noise control), I would really PAY for that camera, bad economy or no.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD880 IS Digital ELPH Digital Camera (Gold):
We used this camera for the first time on our 7800 mile vacation trip. It takes great pictures; is so convenient to slip into a pocket; always handy; easy to use; very clear screen. Did not miss having a viewfinder at all!! ( I thought I would). The best part is the very fast turnaround between pictures and no first shot delay. This is why I chose this camera and it was 2nd in ratings at consumer reports. I definitely recommend this camera. ( We are grandparents and didn't want a really complicated camera--this one was GREAT!!)

Great for a novice like me that wanted a quality point and shoot with wide-angle lens. It performed well on a recent trip to Central Asia, even in 130 degree heat!

Previously owned the Canon PowerShot SD870IS. I broke it by dropping it two stories while the lens was out. I had owned it for a little over two years and traveled the world taking wonderful pictures. It did a fantastic job. Upon its demise, I looked to by the same model and it was no longer being made. So, I purchased this one. The most notable differences are the scroll wheel around the buttons (which is good to move through pictures fast when in playback mode) and the different location of the panoramic function. After figureing those two quick items out, I was on the move again. It has traveled throughout China during the last month and already taken over 6,000 photos. I great little camera - not a dSLR, but awesome when on the go and traveling light.

Easy to use and great color balance. Overall, I am very happy with the quality of the pictures. The larger screen is nice to have too. For a subcompact (it is really small) to have this many features is impressive. There are times when the camera does not autofocus quickly and I cannot take the picture. That caused me to lose a few good candid moments.

overall great camera. fairly user friendly. I say "fairly" because i'm not gadget savvy. Has many features... much more than i've used. Shutter lag with flash is a bit longer than i'd prefer but it's not slow. As most reviewers have pointed out, the control wheel spins a bit too freely, but not really an issue. Low battery warning is not sufficient. The warning comes on too close to failure.... in my experience, only a few minutes (maybe 5 min) before the battery dies. This is annoying, but even knowing this before purchase, I would get this camera anyways.

I was looking for a camera that takes good pics without flash. I use it to take pics of my newborn baby. This camera has definitely exceeded my expectations. The video quality is good as well. I haven't figured out all of the settings yet, but so far very happy with my purchase!!! Battery life is really great as well!

If you're looking for a point & shoot camera that will do everything for you, this is the one. Just used the "fireworks" setting and the photos turned out amazing. The only thing I don't like about the camera is the on/off button is recessed slightly so you really have to get in there to turn it on; however, this could be on purpose to avoid accidently turning it off. My previously PowerShot lasted 5+ yrs and thru trips all over the world and on kayaking trips. I'm hoping this one does, too.

I purchased this camera just before a trip to central america. I wanted a small camera at a good price without sacrificing photo quality, and that's what I got. My photos were great, and the video I took with this camera was better than the video my friend took with a digital camcorder. So far, I have no complaints.

I have owned many camera's and this by far my all-time favorite. I have a Sony SLR, which is also amazing, but for this Canon SD880 which fits right in my pocket, I couldn't ask for any better quality. I sold a Nikon a few years ago that I loved and replaced it first with a Nikon S550 and was disappointed so decided to try the Canon product. I love it! The picture quality is just superb and I love the big screen!

Happy snappy, an extra camera to tote along. We have also an older model SD500. This new model has a bit better autofocus and auto mode than the older model. We like the manual controls of the older model better and it feels more rugged. Missing RAW format, but overall an excellent choice in its price range.

New user interface is a lot better than previous models of the SD series.
This camera replaced our SD 850IS and also a SD 630 that my daughter was using.
Lot better performance and no more annoying redeyes with flash like I am getting with the SD850IS.
My daughter took the 880 on an overseas trip last week and the photos and short videos were great. This camera I am afraid is now "hers", she liked so much!
One advantage is that the battery is the same as in the SD850IS so we can swap batteries

I really like this camera. It is simple to use, setup is easy and the pictures are just great. I print my own pictures at home and this thing is really great. If there is one complaint, which is the same most of these cameras have, is the flash is pretty limited. Too bad they can't put a hot shoe on these digitals so we can get an extra flash for those times we really need it. Great buy and would get it again in a heartbeat.

Purchased camera several days before leaving for a 2 week trip out West. Liked simplicity of use, size and intuitive software features. Captured exquisite photos of our trip including Glacier National Park, Mount Rainier and Olympic National Park. Having lots of fun capturing the beauty of nature in our own back yard. Really enjoying this camera and the lasting inspiration the photos offer. Have yet to check out all the software features but what I have used is user friendly. Can see how I will upgrade to camera with greater lens options as time goes by. Too small of memory card with purchase. Bought 2 additional 4 GB cards, works great. Erase feature is somewhat cumbersome and time consuming but this is a fine starter for a novice digital user looking for quality. Hope this helps.
