The Canon Eg-D Precision Matte Focusing Screen with Grid is an interchangeable focusing screen compatible with the Canon EOS 5D-Mark II camera. This grid screen provides a 3-line (horizontal) by 5-line (vertical) etched grid which facilitates easier composition and horizon alignment. All the 5D-Mark II's AF points remain fully visible. Ideal for architectural use, close-up and copy work, and wide-angle outdoor photography.

The same as the standard screen, except with a grid. I don't find the grid obtrusive, but it is very useful if you need to line up a horizon, verticals, etc. I used the Ee-D grid screen on my original 5D and immediately purchased the Eg-D for my new 5D MK II.
I'm giving 4 vs. 5 stars because I see no reason why the price of 5D MK II accessories should be so much more than those for the original 5D. This seems true across the board for accessories.
Handle carefully - the plastic fresnel lenses are easy to scratch or smudge and cleaning a fingerprint (vs. dust) is essentially impossible.
When inserting, it is easy to get dust trapped between the screen and the bottom of the pentaprism, which will result in dust spots in the viewfinder (but not in your photos). Use a sensor cleaning brush or air blower to make sure the two mating surfaces are clean; then they will stay clean. Additional dust may appear later on the exposed bottom of the screen, but this is easy to clean without removing the screen.

I bought this item for it's obvious use to help me keep my lines straight when shooting architecture. The problem is that it only works well in bright light. If you try to use it in low light the lines are very difficult to see, which is when I use it the most.
I will stick to using live view mode with the grid displayed to keep my verticals straight, since this item doesn't help as much as I would have liked.
I would only recommend this item if you shoot in broad daylight.

I bought this for my 5D Mark II. It's very helpful for aligning the subject to any of the lines.
It's simple to install; takes all of 30 seconds. Just remember to set the custom settings for this screen.

Canon provided clear instructions and a handy tool and holder so that the screens could be exchanged without getting smugs or fingerprints on the screens or mirror.
The screen provides fine lines for getting perspective correct photos and because the lines are fine they are not obstructive.

Once I put this screen in I have not taken it out! The grid get me to focus on the compostion but dose overwhelm the picture. Highly recomend to all. Only issue is it not visable at night no real way corect that. Don't forget to set the screeen type in your camera settings.

Not sure what I was getting into but this was easy. Not sure anyone else commented but making the switch from original screen to this one is very easy. I read the instructions but did not get it. Once I opened up camera it was all very obvious to follow steps. Love the new screen grid. Very helpful for composing pictures. Wish Canon made this the standard screen!

Not much to add here. The focusing screen works as expected. The grid lines make horizontal and vertical alignment a lot easier. The lines are somewhat dim, so they aren't obtrusive.
Replacing the focus screen does require some work.

For pano shooting and every other purpose that requires accuracity, that's the answer!
Just have to follow the instructions changing screens, it requires a bit of precision but it's not hard to put it as most people says and comes in a very protective hard case.
