The same as the standard screen, except with a grid. I don't find the grid obtrusive, but it is very useful if you need to line up a horizon, verticals, etc. I used the Ee-D grid screen on my original 5D and immediately purchased the Eg-D for my new 5D MK II.
I'm giving 4 vs. 5 stars because I see no reason why the price of 5D MK II accessories should be so much more than those for the original 5D. This seems true across the board for accessories.
Handle carefully - the plastic fresnel lenses are easy to scratch or smudge and cleaning a fingerprint (vs. dust) is essentially impossible.
When inserting, it is easy to get dust trapped between the screen and the bottom of the pentaprism, which will result in dust spots in the viewfinder (but not in your photos). Use a sensor cleaning brush or air blower to make sure the two mating surfaces are clean; then they will stay clean. Additional dust may appear later on the exposed bottom of the screen, but this is easy to clean without removing the screen.

I bought this item for it's obvious use to help me keep my lines straight when shooting architecture. The problem is that it only works well in bright light. If you try to use it in low light the lines are very difficult to see, which is when I use it the most.
I will stick to using live view mode with the grid displayed to keep my verticals straight, since this item doesn't help as much as I would have liked.
I would only recommend this item if you shoot in broad daylight.

Not much to add here. The focusing screen works as expected. The grid lines make horizontal and vertical alignment a lot easier. The lines are somewhat dim, so they aren't obtrusive.
Replacing the focus screen does require some work.

Great for beginners to use in alignment. Only issue is that the grid is a bit dim so indoors they don't show up as well. This may not be fixable as I'm not sure how opaque lines may impact the light meter

For pano shooting and every other purpose that requires accuracity, that's the answer!
Just have to follow the instructions changing screens, it requires a bit of precision but it's not hard to put it as most people says and comes in a very protective hard case.

Had a focusing screen with grid on my old 50D so got used to having it. Upgraded to 5dmk2, and so I added this focusing screen again. Truly helps line things up the first time to reduce time fixing things in post production.

I use this screen mostly for scenics with both MF and AF lenses. It provides a nice matte surface for easy manual focussing and grid lines for compositional assistance. This kind of assistance is of great help in keeping horizon lines horizontal. My only gripe is that it isn't quite as nice for manual focussing as the type S screen, when used with fast lenses over f/2.

I ordered this screen first and was hoping it would be more like the super precision matte screen with a grid, but was not.
It is great for aligning landscapes horizons and such, but i ordered the super precision matte screen (eg-s), to use with faster lenses, aids in selecting focus a little better.
The eg-d is basically just like the original screen that comes with the mark2 but with faint grid lines.

Easy to install. The grid lines are too fine however and are hard to delineate with some subjects. You can select the screen in the custom function menu but I did not see any difference in indicated exposure in either setting.
