Batteries are not included. Please make sure to purchase batteries to operate the device.
The Canon Battery Grip BG-E6 is an optional battery grip designed specifically for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. It allows users to load a choice of one or two LP-E6 battery packs. With two packs, the already-impressive battery life is doubled, compared to using a single LP-E6 pack in-camera. This is especially useful when taking advantage of the camera's movie mode or Live View mode - operating modes that use more power. In addition, with the included BGM-E6 Battery Magazine, you can alternatively also run the camera off six AA batteries.
Furthermore the BG-E6 provides full vertical shooting controls, which can be independently turned on or off as the photographer needs to enhance camera handling, especially for shooting vertical pictures.
Note: The battery grip BG-E4 for the previous EOS 5D is not compatible with the new EOS 5D Mark II camera

This battery grip is a must have if you do studio work, portraits, sports, or travel with your camera. Not only does it allow you to easily use your camera in portrait orientation by giving you all the buttons you need on the grip, but it also doubles your battery life be holding 2 batteries.
The grip fits nice and tight on the camera and you'll forget it's a separate piece. It makes it so easy to turn your camera sideways and shoot pictures giving you easy access to all of the buttons that are normally at the top right of the camera so you don't have to have your hands in a funky position reaching over the camera.
One other nice thing about the grip is that if you are out and your batteries die, the grip will allow you to use AA batteries instead of the Canon LP-E6 batteries. This can be a saver.

Okay, so I think it goes without saying (especially given the below reviews) that a battery grip is extremely helpful. I love grips; I've installed them on every one of my cameras and I never regret it. But what about *THIS* battery grip?Bottom line: Not worth it! It feels cheaply made. It's broken twice in the six months I've owned it. First off, the thumb wheel to screw the grip onto the tripod mount of the camera uses a complex system of inner gears, and they're ALL MADE OF PLASTIC. Which means if you crank down too hard on the grip to put it on or take it off, the gears shatter and your grip is stuck on your camera. You then get to pay for the privilege of shipping your camera to Canon and getting it repaired ($50 repair for my particular case). In my case, the gears broke halfway through taking the grip off, breaking the electrical connection, yet not far enough that I could work tools in there to fully remove the grip. Result: a few plastic gears in the grip rendered the entire camera completely unusable."I'll just put it on and leave it on!" declares you. Unfortunately, that won't work either, because the thing loosens over time. So much for the complex gear-driven system that's supposed to... be better than the direct-drive system used on all the other grips out there? For comparison, the cheap knockoff grip I had for my Rebel XT is six years, two rainstorms, a dunking in the river, and countless rock-smashings in, and still going strong (I will admit there might be some gaff tape involved in that).Secondly, the shutter button on the camera has two very satisfying 'levels' of feel to it -- the half-press to expose and the full press to fire the shutter. The button on the grip doesn't have that same feedback, and it makes it hard to work with. Off, Half-on, and full-on are just three arbitrary places in how hard you squeeze the shutter. This would all be okay if the thing were maybe half the price that it is. But at this pricing level, go with a cheap knockoff. You're not getting any extra quality here.I would then take that money you save and buy the Canon brand batteries. Tried other brands, and after a year of use, *the combined run time of all five of my third-party batteries was half the run-time of my one Canon-brand battery.* So I decided to do it right this time and go brand-name. Batteries did not disappoint. Grip did.

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
Terrible design in one very, very important respect that negates all the advantages - the plastic gears in the thumb screw that attach the battery grip to the camera strip out! Mine did this about 18 months after purchase.
I like the convenience of using a battery pack and camera grip so I took a chance and ordered a knock-off. It was almost 1/4 the cost and identical in every way!!! I've used it now over 6 months and I'm very satisfied. Even if it breaks like the original I could buy several and still save money.
Send a message to Canon that accessories are way overpriced for the quality and don't buy this grip.

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
I depend on this thing heavily when shooting weddings to double my battery life. Now I never run out of juice mid-shoot. Also makes the camera more comfortable when shooting for 8-10 hours. My only complaint is that there is an on/off switch which sometimes gets knocked into the off position by accident, and then you suddently have no alternative shutter control. I would just remove this feature if I could.

I had 3rd party grip for a while and it was ok, but for stability on tripod with Arca Swiss L plate you have to have the original. it feels and looks much better too.

It was tough spending the extra $150 to get the name, but I have no regrets. This attachment makes vertical shooting a snap, no awkward searching for controls, and buying the canon brand makes it a smooth and seamless attachment to my camera body. Looks and feels great!

I can't imagine how I would use 5D MARK II without this. I wouldn't go cheap and get the knockoff. Get the real Canon part and feel better about yourself. I love the battery grip. Just buy it! You will not regret your choice. :)

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
This grip makes all the difference in handling the 5D MkII, especially if you shoot headshots or other types of verticals. Fit and finish are excellent and not like the $100 [*]knock-offs. With two batteries installed, the camera can go all day shooting without needing to be replaced. A nifty feature is a small slot for storing the camera body's battery door cover, which must be removed to mount the grip. Smart, Canon! I was pleasantly surprised that it also came with the AA battery holder. I was thinking that was an optional accessory. This could really come in handy if you're in a remote location shooting and your Canon batteries go dead. Just pop in AA's alkalizes and keep shooting. You could also opt for using rechargeable AA's all the time and save a lot of money over time. The grip makes the camera feel more like a tool and less like a toy. I downsized from 1D and 1Ds's recently and missed the feel and build these top-of-the-line cameras offer. The 5D is a great camera, but it's not a 1 series. Although, with the BG-E6 it feels better in my hands, facilitates vertical shooting, and gives me the power to work all day without having to worry about running out of juice.

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
Just received my new BG-E6 grip to go along with my new Canon 5D Mark II. The grip holds 2 batterys and inserts into the camera battery slot. A very clever sleeve holds the camera's battery cover door which has to be removed to use this grip. When not using the grip, the camera battery door is conveniently located and reinstalled. The grip adds an extra shutter button and a second "wheel" control for vertical shots. It is all held together by a mounting bolt that screws into the tripod mount hole. Feels solid and sturdy once assembled together. My only negative is that when using an L zoom lens and the battery grip, the whole package is quite heavy. Overall I am very satisfied.

Comments about Canon BG-E6 Battery Grip:
I've owned Canon BG's for my 10D, 50D, 5D, 7D and now 5D Mark II. I never shoot without them. While they do add extra weight to the camera, I find that it actually helps to balance heavier lenses, and the extra height that it adds to the body lets my larger hands get a firmer hold on the camera.
The controls on the BG-E6 feel identical to those on the 5DII (in contrast to the BG-E7, for example, where the shutter release on the grip is much softer than on the camera). Build quality is identical to the camera body - i.e., suitably rugged magnesium alloy.
The extra battery-life is a must on long shoots and day trips, especially if you're planning on shooting video, and the BG-E6 will track your battery usage and shutter count on both batteries if you're using the Canon LP-E6.
Once I attach my BG, I never take it off.
