I bought this 1TB drive for system backup on my recently purchased iMac. [Unlike the PC world I'm departing, essential things like backup (see mac "Time Machine") are functional and included and the end configuration isn't a cobbled together hair-ball of cables, garbage 3rd party software, and dust bunnies: jmho.]
I looked at other options and chose this for its size, speed, and its myriad connectivity options (ALL CABLES INCLUDED). Initially I connected it with (the included) USB2 cable: the iMac has several USB ports concealed on the back of the monitor but only one FireWire 800 port. That lasted a day or two before I discovered that you can daisy chain up to 63 devices on a single FireWire 800 connector! The 1TB D2 Quadra has two FW-800 ports on it: one "from" another FW-800 device and one "to" another FW-800 device. My 1TB drive is now daisy chained to a 500GB LaCie drive (for video editing) which is then connected to the single iMac FW-800 connector.
To import video I can simply connect the Fire-Wire cable from my video mini-DV cameras to the 2nd FW-800 port on this 1TB drive: a camera would only be the 3rd device on the chain. The video camera (FW-400 in speed w a FW-800 connector) slows down the link while present, but it's still quick enough.
The setup is easy. Drive into (optional) rack (see below), power to drive, (included) cable to computer, power on. The rest is automagic. (I didn't find anything useful in the documentation about daisy chaining FireWire devices and had to look elsewhere.)
My overall experience with the drive has been positive. I purchased the (optional) stainless steel rack for the drives, daisy chained two drives together, and have a single FW-800 cable slinking across my desk. The drives are cool and quiet, sitting there with their large blue eyes blinking now and then. It might just be me but I find the surface of the drive very "advanced": post-it notes don't stick to it! Totally trick surface. Interesting touch..
Watch how you handle the (optional) stainless steel rack: as I assembled it I suddenly noticed traces of blood here and there on the gear. The rack seems to have been stamped out and the process left a razor sharp burr along an edge which left a "paper cut" on both of my thumbs.
PS: when assembling the rack, don't tighten the screws all the way until you've slipped drives into the rack. The rack documentation (wordless drawings) implies something like this but I didn't parse it until I tried to slide the drives into the already might-tightly screwed together rack. No big deal, but it might save you time..

I bought the LaCie 1TB d2 Quadra Hard Drive for back up for my photographic work. I already owned a 500mb LaCie, and my computer is a 6 month old iMac operating OS X.6.4.
Following the installation procedures described in the "Quick Install Guide," I plugged the new drive in and connected it to my older one via firewire.
To my dismay, my old drive was reformatted, thus wiping out my access to everything on it.
I called the store I bought my Imac from and the service person I spoke with said that had happened to another customer and said they'd charge $400 to recover my files and $85.00 if they didn't succeed. Instead I hired a very good local tech support person who is trying to recover my files and has spoken with a LaCie support person who says that it's impossible for this to have happened, though he can't explain why my older hard drive should have been reformatted. Still, he said, one should always disconnect all other external drives when formatting a new one. The installation guide only warns against stacking more than three of these hard drives, so I suggested that LaCie revise the guide to include the warning about unplugging other drives. Naturally, they will take no responsibility for a malfunction of this sort.
I have always really liked LaCie products, but I will probably not buy any more of them. I will continue to buy through B&H, as I have always found them to be very reliable and helpful.

I use one of these for each DVD project I make. They are super reliable, fast and simple to use. I can hook them all up to copy files from the previous projects to the new one and even use one to link my camera to my Mac through and older firewire 400 connection. Very flexible drive. Quiet as a mouse, quick to wake up and mounts/un-mounts with no dramas.

I bought 2 of these at the same time. There are 2 different versions/generations of these and B&H sent me one of each. Not quite as easy to install what I'm guessing is the older one. No auto-install and seems like poorer quality cables. It will be interesting to see which one caputs first. Noisier than expected, but Lacie seems to be the most bomber hdd available.

I use this hard drive with Time Machine -- to back up my computer. It is so big that it can handle a lot. My other Storage hard-drive began running out of space. This new LaCie has freed up my older LaCie for other types of personal storage.

I formatted this for the Mac using the included SW. The first time I used Time Machine it stopped part way through. It said it was done, but only backed up part of the data. I reformatted using Disk Utilities and tried again. Same thing. Tried once more and the backup completed, but successive ones wouldn't. Returning it for something else.

I use this product for all my video, audio, and graphics. Plenty of space, nice and quiet, and looks totally cool. It does weigh quite a bit but it feels like I could throw it off a cliff and dust it off and plug right back in with no problems. (Not recommended)

I have two drives like this, one for working with video and the other one for backups. I've mounted them on a rack to save some desk space. In more than a year 0 problems. I sometimes even forget that the drives are there. They are very quiet, do their job well, and fast. I really have nothing to complain about. I'm a big fan of LaCie drives. I've had several different models, and they've all served well.

Comments about LaCie 1TB d2 Quadra Hard Drive:
For the price, this hard drive is a great deal. Multiple interfaces for easy connection to your computer is a must! I have two of these stacked on top of each other, one as a main drive, the other as a manual backup. They both perform great running several hours a day. Only con is that they do produce a little noise while you are writing info to the disk. Not silent by any means, but not too loud to be annoying with them sitting on the desk right beside me.

I already had a Lacie 500 gig drive and added this 1TB drive for more space. I edit video footage with Final Cut Pro. Much of it in high resolution HD. These drives work great and are very reliable. I have them daisy chained to one another. No problems. I did however follow the advice of someone here at this site and removed my existing 500 gig and plugged in the TB by itself when I first formated it. Others here said they had problems when leaving the first one plugged in so I just followed the advice as a precaution. I recommend Lacie hard drives like this to anyone who is editing video. They do the job and are rock solid. I've had my older one for about 2 and a half years. No problems.

I use this drive to backup my macbook pro and record my pro tools session. Both things it handles very well and very quickly. My only issue is that it seem to come on randomly (no backup being run, not accessing the drive) and when it starts spinning it is far from quiet.
