The Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Lens is exclusively designed for use with SLR cameras that use the smaller APS-C size sensor. This lens provides a super wide-angle zoom range, ideal for the tightest of interiors, as well as for dramatic landscape photography.
This updated "II" version benefits from improved multi-coating technology, which helps to reduce reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. The Focus Clutch Mechanism feature - a signature of Tokina PRO series lenses - provides a faster, smoother autofocus operation, with a smooth manual focus action not normally found in autofocus lenses.
Two aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design, to correct for spherical aberrations. It also incorporates internal focusing to prevent deterioration of the optical quality at close distances and to eliminate rotation of the front barrel during focusing.
Equivalent focal length in 35mm terms when used on a digital camera is 19-38mm.
Note! NOT recommended for 35mm film or digital "full-frame" SLR cameras

Basically, I use this when my primes are just not wide enough - duh.
I use exclusively primes on my camera (7D) except for this one zoom. I am accustomed to having both fast glass (f/2.8 is my next slowest lens) as well as the sharpness that comes with primes. I was concerned that this would be my softest lens by far (being a zoom and all), but its performance is really indistinguishable from my other lenses (other than the super wide angle, of course).
The lens is well built. I have another Tokina (100mm macro) which seems similary tough - so far I'm impressed with Tokina. The lens has super smooth zoom and focus rings (much smoother than my other lenses). The focus is very quick, and nearly silent - similar to my Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM (hence the title). The lens does have some gaps in the back (when it's off-camera) that have the potential to admit dust during lens changes.
The front glass element is very close to the front of the lens body (even with the hood on) so beware of fingerprints. Tokina has their lens caps use the center-pinch release design, so if you forget that you already took the lens cap off, you may end up reaching onto the front element. It's one of those you-do-it-once-and-learn kind of things.
The lens does exhibit flare, although it is seldom distracting from the overall image.
As mentioned previously, this is my slowest lens. However, for what I use it (mostly outdoors/indoors with flash) I don't miss the larger aperatures. I do use it for long exposure night photography, and then I do miss the speed. Note that you will need a dedicated flash to use with this lens -- at least MY pop-up flash casts shadows. It does work perfectly with at least the Canon 430EX II.

Bought this lens in 2006 and used it off and on since then (I'm a hobbyist, wasn't using it daily as a pro or anything) - nice optics, sharp, good colors. However - 2 months ago I found that I could only shoot at f/4-f-5, smaller apertures gave an error.
This was due to a ribbon cable inside the lens wearing against an interior component when the zoom was used. Not sure if the design has changed in the last 5 years, but could be worth looking into. Now shopping for a new lens...

This lens is on my camera almost all the time. The wide angle and the zoom to 24 makes it useful in almost every situation and i don't think i would like the tokina 11-16 2.8 more even though you can open it up more because of the wide angle I rarely need to open mine up to f4.0

Can't say enought great things about this lens! Sharp right from f/4. Fast, accurate focusing. Focus noise is hardly noticable on my 7D. Minor CA wide open but not even close to being as bad as I have read in reviews. Besides, CA is a common wide angle issue regardless of brand name and is easly fixed in Photoshop or any other software. Better built that many name brand lenses that cost far more. You really won't regret buying this lens.

Like all Tokina Lenses I have seen this too is built like a tank. Nice and solid. Image quality is great, vignetting is not noticeable and distortion is well controlled for a UWA. I am very happy with my purchase.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital Cameras:
This is a good lens its pictures are pretty good, but its easy to use switching from af to mf is easy. You just need to push or pull the focus ring to switch from one to the other. The auto focus is ok and so is the picture quality but if you don't have a lot of money its a pretty good deal. and for an EF-S monut it will give you a nice wide shot.

I thoroughly researched the product before ordering. [...] the Tokina lens is performing better than I hoped. I have added a neutral density Hoya filter as recommended by several professional reviewers. I have no hesitation in recommending this lens.[...]

The lens is great - it has become a favorite city walk-abouts. Sharp photos right out of the camera prior to processing. Adjusting qickly to the switch between auto and manual focus. Looking forward to taking this lens on the next back country hiking trip (even if it is a bit of extra weight in the pack)

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital Cameras:
First off, if you are looking for the best ultra wide angle lens for aps-c sensored cameras then look no further because this lens rocks! It is great for three main reasons that i can think of.
First off it is exeptionally well built. Compared to the cannon 10-22's build quality it is of equal or if not better build quality. It feels solid to grip in the hands and the focus and zooming rings feel sturdy and high quality. No lens creep here! The way that one would manual focus on this lens is slightly different from that of other cannon lenses. You have to pull down on the auto focus ring and it will pop into place. Although any lens dosen't come without its flaws. The lens might be a little heavy for some and the zoom ring is slightly too pushed twords the back off the lens for my liking. The auto to manual focus is well, not as graceful as having the auto and manual focus togather. Although these are all things that one can easily overlook.
The seccond reason for my four star rating is the sharpness of the auto focusing and the speed and quietness in which it does this. The auto focusing is extremely tack sharp and silent for a lens of this price range.
Finally I was very impressed with this lens's image quality and f stop speed throughout. This lens keeps a constant F/4 throughout the entire range making it seem more proffessional than a consumer, pro-sumer lens. The images I have taken so far are spectacular. I must say though that the sharpness at f/4 is slightly blurry. But anything above f/9 and you should have golden sharpness even around the edges. I must say that this lens has some distortion but has a much better handel on it than other third party lens manufacturers. The vinetting problem that is seen in most ultra wide angle lenses is almost unnoticable at apatures above f/9.
In conclusion this lens is the wide angle lens to get for aps-c sensor sized cameras epecially for the price tag that it carries with it. I have had it for about a month now and am enjoying every minute of it! Go out there and get some great landscape shots everyone!
Ps: If you are looking for a low light ultra wide angle for nightime shots check out the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Autofocus Lens.

The Tokina 12-24mm has what I need and expected from this super-wide angle. I know is heavy, but lets goes to the facts it's well made, strong construction to resist any environment, the auto focus is fast, the zoom ring has a nice grip to me it's smooth, the focus ring is big and smooth for my taste. The lens comes with its hood (which canon doesn't include with the 10-20mm).
This is a lens everybody should have. I rest my case hehehehehe!

Have been a customer of B&H online and 2 weeks ago was in NYC for a week of vacation and when I realized my hotel was a mere 6 blocks from the photography wonderland I of course had to visit. I had been researching UWA lenses in advance of the trip and had my choices down to this lens and the Sigma 10-20. [...] the Tokina was the choice and I enjoyed using the lens all over NYC that week. Sharp, crisp, fast focus and a wonderfully wide field of view. 5 stars for the lens and 5 stars for B&H.

I use the lens primarily for realestate, followed by art/portraits, vacation. There are some similarly priced wide zooms from other manufacturers that seemed to offer a bit more in features and be a bit wider. I tried tokina on the advice of a friend and I'm glad I did. I'm very impressed with the solid and smooth mechanical build quality. Sharp photos, .

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital Cameras:
This is the best wide angle lens for a crop canon period!
If you claim that it's not sharp it's not the lens but you!
This lens is a saver in tight spaces when doing events and a superior landscape lens. Overall I would choose this over the canon any day of the week.
I usually never buy third party products but this has to be an exception, I made it for me!
