DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with "full-frame" FX digital or 35mm film SLR cameras.
The Nikon mount Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124AF Pro DX II Lens is exclusively designed for use with SLR cameras that use Nikon's DX format (APS-C size). In addition, this updated "II" version incorporates a motor built into the lens itself, which gives it the capability to autofocus with all Nikon DSLR cameras, including the D40 and D60 series. Another benefit of the built-in motor is that focusing is quieter and more responsive. This lens provides a super wide-angle zoom range, ideal for the tightest of interiors, as well as for dramatic landscape photography.
This 12-24mm f/4 AT-X version II lens also benefits from improved multi-coating technology, which helps to reduce reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. The Focus Clutch Mechanism feature - a signature of Tokina Pro series lenses - provides a faster, smoother autofocus operation, with a smooth manual focus action not normally found in autofocus lenses.
Two Aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design, to correct for spherical aberrations. It also incorporates internal focusing to prevent deterioration of the optical quality at close distances and to eliminate rotation of the front barrel during focusing.
Equivalent focal length in 35mm terms when used on a digital camera is 18-36mm.
Note! DX lenses are NOT recommended for use with "full-frame" FX digital or 35mm film SLR cameras.

I am blown away by the quality of this lens. I use the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 as the main lens on my D5000 and have found it to be a wonderful lens. I also use the Nikon 55-200mm VR kit lens, but am not normally much interested in tele lenses. It's a decent enough lens, but not very bright. When I decided to get a UWA, I looked at a lot of options. I prefer staying with DX lenses for weight considerations. The Nikon 12-24 and 10-24 were decent enough lenses from what I could see, but didn't really excite me. The Nikon 14-24 is a beautiful lens, bu is heavy and costs a fortune. In truth, eve te two DX Nikons were more than I wanted to pay, too. Sigma's two 10-20s seemed dull-normal to me, as did the Tamron. The Sigma 8-16 just seemed too extreme and hasn't really gotten great reviews so far.But the Tokinas (both this and the 11-16) were really exciting. The photos from both have great sharpness and contrast and just seem to be more appealing to my eye than those of the other lenses. Every review I found of either lens raved about them. I wasn't attracted to how short the zoom range was on the 11-16, although I liked the f/2.8. But I really like to lug just one lens at a time if possible, and I couldn't imagine any use model where 11-16 would be the only lens I would carry. 12-24 seemed plausible to take as my only lens in some situations. So I got the Tokina 12-24. I opted for the DX II because the original one had a bad flair problem (as do most UWA lenses), and the concensus seemed to be that the DX II coating really helped with that. Photozone thinks the internals of the DX II are also improved, with less softness at the long end, but Tokina doesn't claim to have changed anything but the coating. Given the variability in production, they may just have gotten a better lens instance on their DX II test unit. Anyway, I got it and love it. The autofocusing is quick and quiet, even though this lens does not use an ultrasound motor.I was surprised by how little Chromatic Aberration was present. I don't know whether this is another benefit of the new coating or whether they really did change the lens configuration or if it's just that the D5000 is removing any CA that may be there. But I would expect more CA than I am seeing on my Tokina from just about any lens, wide-angle or not. It is really impressive. I have a set of photos I took of the Chihuly glass sculpture exhibit in Meijers Gardens in Grand Rapids that can give you some idea of the lens: [@] down-sampled before uploading, but the originals are as CA-free as the down-res. It's really amazing if you scope out some of the dark leaves against the skylight. The build quality of the lens is better than the two Nikons I have (admittedly, it's a more expensive lens than either of them, but I was still impressed). I saw a couple of people complain about the attach/detach mechanism of the lens being too tight on their cameras. I have found it to be comparable to the Nikons in that regard -- smooth and sure. The only thing that bothers me (and you can see it in some of the sample photos I took) is that the lens hood is just visible in the upper corners when the lens is at its widest angle setting. I will grind down the corners of the hood, but Tokina should have paid more attention to that small detail. Other than that, the lens is a marvel. I would certainly be happy to buy another Tokina based on my experience with their quality in this lens.

Comments about Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X 124 AF Pro DX II Lens:
I have the Nikon 18-105 and I needed a wider angle lens. I took the Tokina since its construction is much better than the Tamron 10-24mm and the Nikkor 10-24mm (BTW, the Nikkor seems to be constructed by Tamron; see the optical scheme and the physical construction of these two lenses). Also, I tried them in the store and in this short test, the Tokina was better than the others. I haven't used much but my photos, taken wide-open in low light are really OK. I had, however, some difficulty to get sharp images in my D90 when the subject is very close (as written description of museum paintings, for instance).

This lens does very well for landscape work, architecture, and environmental portraiture. It is built extrememly well and is very solid and smooth to operate. It is best at smaller apertures but still quite good at f4. an excellent addition to my camera bag.

After much deliberation I bought this. I am reviewing images right now from my first shoot and this thing is s h a r p. The focal range is so fun to play in the real wide-angle side. I got some great shots and look forward to using it quite a lot.

Built like a tank.
amazingly sharp.
great feel.

slower focusing then the sigma10-20, but more accurate.
I originally bought the Sigma 10-20 and had a bad lens I guess. Soft left side, and front focusing problems. The Tokina is such a better lens for just a little bit more$$$. It's so worth the extra. Much sharper in the corners and throughout.

I loved it since I the first time. Quickly became one of my favorite lenses. It´s the first one I own but I can definitely recommend it over the Nikkor 12-24 DX and if you are in a budget.

I shoot photography for a hobby for now and picked this lens over the more expensive Nikon version. I have found the lens to be very sharp even wide open. I would recommend this lens to anyone looking for a great priced wide angle lens at a great price

[...] I decided to go with this 12-24. I'm glad I went ahead and did !! Great , solid , well built like a tank lens !! This being my first Tokina lens , I'm sure it won't be my last !! Used on a D90 and D200 for landscapes and general work. Nice wide 12mm for great shots. Would like to have a 2.8 but the extended range of 12-24 fits me better than the 11-16. Although I'm sure I will pick up the 11-16 2.8 later. Tokina glass is truly pro grade !!

I bought this lens for its wide-angle capacity, since I photograph interiors for my Real Estate Listings. While I do like the lens, I find it can sometimes create a fish eye look to my photos. No one else might notice it, but I do. I see the little curve. My son, who is more of a photographer than I, loves it. That being said, I am going to supplement this lens with the Canon 24-70 2.8.

I give five stars because of its high built quality and sharp images!
Compare to sigma 10-20, tokina 124 has much better built quality! I have used the sigma before, it is sharp as well and has the wider angle, but when you hold it on hands, it feels cheap.
Built quality is perfect! And the sharpness is nice for the price. F/4 for me is enough.

I've read the reviews on this lens from several sources prior to my purchase and still it is beyond my expectations. I'm using a Nikon D7000 camera and I shot similar shots with one of my Nikon lenses and then the Tokina at the same focal length... Amazingly similar at 100% edge to edge. What a lens for any tight shots or any appropriate situation. I also like the heavy feel of a rugged lens....

I use this for landscape pictures and it's great. It's sharp at most apertures, however 8-11 is where I usually shoot. It's built like a tank, and feels solid on my D3100. It's a little prone to flare, but not as bad as some reviews say. The colors and contrast are amazing. It's probably been my best lens purchase so far, no regrets.
