The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Lens is a large aperture standard zoom lens that is ideal for photojournalism and general pro photography. The lens covers focal lengths from 24mm wide angle to 70mm medium telephoto, with a bright viewfinder, and easy AF/MF all the way through. When used with Canon digital SLR cameras with APS-C size sensors, the focal length offered by this lens will be equivalent to 38-112mm, in 35mm SLR terms.
The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function as well as full-time manual focusing capability. This lens features Super Multi Layer Coating, which reduces flare and ghosting. DG is a designation Sigma uses on lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras. In addition, this lens has been redesigned and is now more compact and lighter than its predecessor.

I purchased this SIGMA 24-70 f2.8 EX HSM lens about a month ago, and it has been a great lens for my Canon EOS 1Ds full frame body.
Sigma was the first inventor, and issuer of this 24-70 focal length class lenses.
After Sigma did so, Canon, Nikon, all major optics manufacturers followed sigma's achievements.
Sigma knows and does their 24-70 right.
This SIGMA 24-70 f2.8 EX HSM is their 3rd upgrade of the type which has shown great improvements in all aspects.
The first two 24-70's were quite versatile, however their image quality could use some improvements.
But this one is totally different. Nearly perfect.
1. This lens is built like a rock. Very solid feeling throughout all parts. It could be a bit heavy but not as heavy as it's biggest competitor, Canon's 24-70L f2.8 USM lens.
2. The lens was designed shorter than Canon's 24-70L, which is great when you have to move around at a field. You would see much less interference.
3. The lens has a big diameter which could be too big, which could give you better grip of the lens.
4. Fast focusing. Focusing performance is a combination of the lens integrated processor and the AF processor in your camera. This lens itself performs great.
5. Image qulity. I got a chance to test multiple samples of this lens with multiple samples of Canon's 24-70L, and this lens outperformed the Canon lens, especially in the center. Because of its large diameter, you may experience insignificant light degradation around the edge of the image frame. But some people do that on purpose. Shows great, crisp, charming colors in image.
Summary:
Pros: Lighter, shorter lens with great image quality. Great mechanism performance. Fairly fast focusing.
Cons: I did not experience this issue even though this is my 2nd Sigma lens. Some say the pearl exterior coating was scratched off after years of use, which I did not experience.

I have struggled with the decision Canon 24-70 L or Sigma 24-70 HSM ex, I have read every single review, on every single site. I decided to go with the Sigma. My wife insists that if I read a good Sigma review , that it was secretly written by the Sigma company and the same if it's a strong Canon review..I don't work for either company.
I ordered the Sigma, my first impression was , very sturdy feeling, a bit shorter than my Canon 28-135, First problem was that the zoom ring is at the rear of the Sigma lens, right up against the camera body, it changed how I am used to holding the Canon 7D, I didn't like that part, also the zoom ring was very stiff, beyond firm, you had to squeeze it to turn it. I also discovered right away that I missed the IS on my regular Canon lens .
It is a very short lens , which I thought I was going to like but I didn't.
I started to shoot, pictures looked pretty good, Bokeh is beautiful on this lens, HSM focus motor is amazing, totally silent fast as anything I have ever seen, I could get used to the short feel if I had to.
The real test: I have read all about some of us trying this lens and having back or front focus issues, it seemed for the most part to be ok on my 7D, shots looked sharp.
My neighbor also has a 7D, with a Canon 70-200 non IS F2.8 lens. I decided to shoot side by side with him, both cameras set to the exact same settings, both at 70mm, 2.8. various shutter speeds, no flash, this is where the difference became obvious.
We shot images of his wife, face only, dead focus between the eyes, then zoomed in to full zoom first on the camera screen , then on my 27" imac, the Canon eyes were crystal clear, tack sharp..perfect, the Sigma lens was not, it was fuzzy, not horrible , but not in the league of the Canon.
I sent my Sigma back and I'm staying with the Canon lens for my Canon camera.
Even with that said, I'm not trashing the Sigma lens, for a lot of shooters the quality is going to be good and it's a good price for a really nice lens, but I saw it with my own eyes, the Canon lens was SO much sharper, which means the shots will look better when zoomed back to regular size.
I am also aware that I might find the sweet spot at a different zoom range on the Sigma, but I want to be able to shoot at any length on the lens and know it will be as clear as possible. In my opinion, the Canon does a better job, more expensive yes, but I am getting paid for my work and i want to show the best that I can. I hoped this helped someone else. Also it seems impossible to install the lens cap on the Sigma with the lens hood in place.

Just got this amazing lens and am amazed at what results it gets.Beautiful bokhen clear and colorful shots it produces. Use it mainly for portraits but also for landscapes and flowers. Great indoor lens without having to bump up the ISO. At 1.7lbs (82mm glass) it's a bit heavy on my 7D with battery grip. The autofocus is silent and precise. Great lens and alot more affordable than the Canon. I can't afford Canon glass so all my lenses are Sigma and no regrets. Very happy with Sigma glass!!

So glad I went with this lens over the twice as much canon 24-70. Very well built lens, focus is very fast and spot on. If you are looking for a fast lens in the wide to mid telephoto rage you will be very happy with this lens. I prefer the bokeh this lens produces over the canon due to the sigmas 9 blade rounded diaphragm.

Big disappointment! I tested this lens both indoors as well as outdoors and could not get a sharp image at any range or aperture. My first time buying a non-L lens and will be my last. Maybe I got a really bad copy but I am not taking a chance in getting another one. Will need to dig deeper into my pocket to get a Canon "L" lens instead.

Bought this lens back in november and I have to say it is very good. Focus is sharp, fast. I don't have much of problems with it at all.
In dark I noticed it has some issues focus but it is not too bad and I just had to figure it out... Little heavy but hey the price is right so what?...

Takes sharp beautiful pictures at F4 and up, but there I a noticeable drop in image quality when opening up beyond 4 and particularly at 2.8.
That said, what lens looks great at full wide anyhow. I think for the money this lens performs as well as the canon UL when it's at 4 and above, but if you are looking for that f2.8 speed you might want to open your wallet up a bit more for the canon model.

I've only had the lens for two weeks and I would highly recommend it. This lens does everything I need from wide angle to portrait to zoom. The best all in one lens I've ever owned. I've been practicing before my first big photo shoot in a couple of days with excellent results. A little heavier than my other lenses, but the quality makes up for the extra weight.

This is a superior lens. I have only used it for a few weeks and find that I don't need any other lens for taking pics for family pictures, baby shots and etc. I truly think everyone should have the same lens.

Comments about Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:
I've been using this lens for a fortnight, and it has an annoying problem with the autofocus constantly focusing just in front of what is under the focus point in the camera. I've tried the autofocus across the zoom range and from F2.8 to F22 without much change. The areas that are in focus are perfectly sharp and the HSm is fast and quiet. But the consistently out of focus images really ruin this lens for me.

The Canon 24-70 f/2.8, is better.
Canon is sealed against weather and dust, it is not. Canon already has the settings to reduce vignetting and "talk" better with the camera to be the same brand. I found the Canon's Fast ... I did not do specific tests for this, but seems to be.
PROS:
Other than that, it has a very good focus ... a very good image ... sharpness ... I love it! It is a great option for those who do not want to spend more with Canon. Great lens, with a professional level.

This is my workhorse lens. Almost permanently attached to my camera.
We use this for film on a 7D and also for headshots and general photography. The 60mm is absolutely perfect for headshots. You can really see the 9 blade aperture in the soft background. Looks amazing. My backgrounds look almost as good as the subject!
Focus is super sharp and perfect almost everytime.
Now one thing to keep in mind. IF you're shooting film, you might really want to consider SIGMA's 17-50mm f/2.8. Here's why:
When we're shooting films, I find myself constantly switching betwen this lens and my 10mm-20mm Sigma because at 24mm it's not quite wide enough for indoor cinema shots. If this lens went to 20mm it would be absolutely perfect. I'm probably going to buy the 17mm-50mm for this reason alone.
That 18mm-24mm range is critical for film and video shoots.
For headshots and general photography, this lens is perfect.
For film and video the 17mm-50mm might do you better.

I got this lens two week ago. It is great. a friend of mine told me that it is not as the canon 24-70mm. in some cases that is true but this lens is actually a lot better then you'd think. this is just my personal opinion. anyone can think what every they want about it. but till you have actually used it yourself you don't truly understand the capability of this lens. we all need different gear for different uses and this lens fits my needs. along with my canon 70-200mm i have the ideal gear for any of my assignments. overall great lens. great build. 5 stars

Have heard some great things about this lens as well as some negatives. However, my experience so far has been great. Images are clear, in AF mode, the motor is very quiet and fairly fast. Bought the lens for portait photography, and am finding that the colors are good as well as nice bokeh when shooting wide open. Seems to be well made, and comes with a case with rubber cut-outs so it doesn't rattle around. Overall, a very good lens.As well, I am from Canada and was afraid of customs and duty charges, but happily there were no surprises. [...]

Great cost/benefit. I like it to be smaller than Canon's counterpart, but still a little bit heavy. I primarily use it for video recording with Canon DSLR, and the image it brings is just superb, even in los-light conditions. Needfull to say, great bokeh @ f 2.8You can save around $500 bucks if picking this vs. Canon, and I feel it's being worth it. [...]
