After charging the battery it was up and running flawlessly.Here is what i like about this camera: 1. Small, compact size, in attractice stylish shiny black nd design.2. Easy pistol shaped grip, although new to me, grew on me very fast.3. It fits in my pocket, and is up in 1.6 seconds from the moment you flip the view screen.4. Beuatiful bright 3 inches lcd screen, great vibrant colors.5. Easy set up, menu is really intuitive. those who complained about the manual and the difficulty of set up probably have handeled very few electronic pieces in their entire life. if you know how to read and have a basic understanding of photopgrapy, the set up is a breeze. if in doubt, always choose auto mode.6. Battery life is really good for the size. i bought 2 replacement batteries on [...]I placed a 16 GB SDHC MEMORY CARD, A-DATA, (FOR 29.909 FROM [...]). WORKS FLAWLESSLY.8. Zooming is powerful 5 x, and can activate the digital zoom also. not bad at all.9. Easely connects to computer via supplied proprietary usb cable. or you can take out the sd/sdhc card and palce it in the computer memory reader.10. I selected the Xacti over the Flip or clones because I wanted the 5x optical zoom none of the flip-like cameras have.
The quality of the photos and video is acceptable. But some of the features-- not so. Most disappointing, the image on screen is virtually invisible in bright sunlight. I just returned from the beach and had to guess that I was pointing the camera at the object I wanted to shoot. The controls are also less than intuitive. Having used digital cameras for over 10 years and a variety of video camera for 25 years, I shouldn't need to consult the instruction manual so often to simply shoot a video or a snapshot. Several photos I thought I snapped were not there.
Finally, a huge design flaw in the battery charger. Here we have a very lightweight, compact camera. But for the battery charger, Sanyo gives us a small light charger-- and a kludgy six foot AC cord needed to plug it in. I would have expected the charger to have fold out prongs, like my Canon camera charger. Instead, to take the Xacti on a trip, one can't just put the little camera and charger into a small carry pouch. One needs a sizable bag to hold the thick and relatively bulky power cord. If I had known before I ordered, that would have been a deal breaker. What were they thinking????

I have this camcorder for about a month, seldom used it. All of a sudden all the buttons stopped working. All!!! Oh, no, sorry. Playback button "works" - recalls all pictures to the screen and nothing after that.
Battery is full, LCD lights up, nothing works. Can't go to settings, can't switch from photo to video, can't shoot, can't move between pics in playback. And B&H doesn't provide any warranty (according to the sale slip).

If you are looking for a low cost high quality camcorder, then this is the one. Even though it is advertised as dual camera, the photo quality is bad and I would probably use only when I do not have my regular photo camera handy. The video quality is 720p with very good color contrast and picture quality and 5x zoom which is decent. I played it on my 1080p sony hd tv and the quality is very very good. Very light weight and easy to carry on day to day tasks or leave it in the bag and you won't notice the weight. The shape is well known for its grip. I used a 4-class and a 6-class sd card and both have equal un-noticeable performance. An extra battery would be good when you are outdoor. The only reason I have given the 4 stars (****) is because, it lacks the image stabilization. I am using the image stabilization software when necessary.

Didn't want to invest hundreds of dollars into a digital video camera but wanted something other than my point-and-shoot to take high def. video with. This camera is that. It's compact, easy to use, has a surprising amount of features and settings and had a great price tag. The still images are ok in bright light, but low-light performance is iffy.

For the price, this camera has great video and sound. As a teacher in training, I use it to record myself teaching, and it does a good job getting my voice and my students' voices, and the picture quality is good, even at the "blogging" resolution.
My main complaint is that I'd love to plug it into the wall and let it run all day, and that's not possible with this camera -- it only runs on (rechargable) batteries, which only last 70 minutes. So I'm constantly swapping out batteries between classes, which is unfortunate.

I bought this camcorder just in time for the birth of my son. The best thing about it is its size. You can bring it anywhere without people noticing that you are carrying a camcorder.
The power turns on the moment you unfold the LCD screen and you can start shooting.
The only downside is its performance under low light. Once you start using ISO 400 for videos, noise is already noticeable. But for family use and posting on the web, it doesn't bother me at all.

I use this camera for capturing live performances in both studio and live club situations.
In clearly lit settings, this camera delivers quality video. Image sharpness decreases in low light but easily compensated with a flood lamp. Audio quality is clear stereo with nearly transparent compression in high volume situations.
Still shots are very clear with crisp resolution. A steady hand or tripod is recommended for low light shots without the flash, but that's par.
An overall excellent camera for web videos, everyday on the fly shooting and low budget movie making with adequate lighting.
Things I would improve: needs a built-in video light and a wider lens.

I use this for recording all my kids activities: piano, guitar and speech presentations. The sound quality is very good, the picture is much better than my 5 year old DV camcorder. Lots of features help to maximize the results. The file format works well with our Mac computers and iPods. The compact size yet nice LCD monitor are a plus.

I bought this camera after a fair degree of research and was fully aware of reviewer feedback on this product. Camera is well priced for good quality video with a 5x optical zoom.
Seeing how quickly technology has been speeding along, I did not feel that spending hundreds on a video camera makes sense.
With this camera you can have good HD quality video today and still have money to spare for the next generation of video camera in a couple of years.

Sure it's a little slow, and the menu settings are at times inconveniently buried, but it's only [$]. I love it's size, audio, and video quality.
