To minimize the effects of camera shake, the camera offer a 4-way VR (Vibration Reduction) function which includes Nikon's Optical VR Image Stabilization that compensates for camera shake by moving the image sensor, as well as Motion Detection, ISO 3200 and Best Shot Selector (BSS).
Motion Detection compensates for camera shake by automatically controlling shutter speed and ISO settings, while Best Shot Selector (BSS) automatically takes up to 10 shots while the shutter is pressed and then saves the sharpest image. High ISO3200 capability gives you sharper results when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects (ISO 3200 is only available at 3MP or lower resolution) .

- Nikon's Smart Portrait System ensures a bright smile being captured without blinking, offers in-camera red-eye fix and rescues dark or backlit images by improving brightness and detail where needed. The enhanced Face-priority Auto Focus can detect up to 12 faces-per-image and adjusts brightness on the subject's face to ensure well-balanced exposure of a whole picture.
- Sports Continuous Scene Mode
- In this mode you can shoot up to 30 consecutive pictures at 13 fps (frames per second) when you set the resolution to 3MP or lower. This allows you to stay ahead of most any action scene you wish to shoot. Capture that golf or baseball swing, or the fast action on the soccer field.
- Automatic Scene Selector
- The camera can automatically recognize the scene and select from one of six scene modes (Portrait, Night Portrait, Close-up, Landscape, Night Landscape or Backlight mode) for best results. The Coolpix L100 offers a total of 16 scene modes plus 5 color options for special effects, and can record video with sound.
- Records to SD/SDHC Memory Cards
- Records to SD (Secure Digital) or SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) memory cards and even has a 44MB internal memory for those times you may not have a card available.

Our company's field techs use these cameras. One of the few (if not the only) cameras of this type that still has date stamp capability. While I believe the picture quality of the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 to be slightly better than the L100, this camera is more than adequate for our needs. On a very positive note, the eight L100's we currently own have held up well in the field (6 months of being hauled around in trucks with no problems so far).

I got this camera to replace a point & shoot Fuji camera which was starting to break. It was in my price range and I was excited about the higher resolution. The camera is okay, but still not up to par to my first p & s Fuji E 550. The images are often not as crisp as I expected, the macro either catches the image or not, I can't grab an exposure and focus in another place, hold it and move to what I want to shoot and I wish it had manual override controls. I also don't think the video function is quite as good...I can't focus during shooting and the videos are blurry. I have been a Nikon person since I worked in Medical Illustration in vet school, shooting on some old F bodies and I got this Nikon to see how the lower end cameras were since I haven't gone digital yet with my big SLR. I am not overly impressed, and am thinking that Canon, esp with the full frame sensor is the way to go. Nikon has just been too behind the ball on some functions and features and I am disappointed in this camera. I might give it to a friend who just shoots pix of family members and go back to Fuji for now.

I use the camera for personal "art" and family pics. I had some nice SLR film cameras AE-1 etc many years ago and knew that type was more than I needed today this gives me some adjustability to be creative with a nice amount of optical zoom and its really user friendly. I can set it on easy auto and hand it to anyone I know and they will get a great shot assuming they actually look at the view screen.

The countless picture modes are spectacular for choosing which mode fits the setting to take prime pictures.

I use this for personal use and it does everything I will ever need.The zoom is great.Only con is you have to loosen batery cover to get to the sd card.Not a big deal and would still buy.Not sure about battery life haven't used enough but know it is a lot better than my old camera.

I've always thought that nikons were the one of the most trusted brand name cameras out there. but after getting the nikon coolpix L100 i was dissapointed.. for a bigger camera it didnt have the best quality picture. the lens sticks out too far below the flash so when taking pictures at the slightest upward angle prepare to have a half moon shadow at the bottom of your photo. (very irritating when you had the perfect shot such as a baby finally smiling for the camera)..
its not so easy to change settings because to change one simple setting theres four more u have to set to get there. (irritating when shooting something on a time limit)...
i guess its all about preference, it might work for you but it didnt for me..

The camera is pretty compact and got 15x zoom.
This camera is very easy to use you get very good pictures with it.
The 3 inch LCD is bigger than the screens on the other cameras, it's very bright, and it has a coating that reduces glare.
Image stabilization works very well. As long as you are in the right mode the camera takes completely focused and clear pictures, even with an unsteady hand.
