Handy stereo mic

After deliberating over condenser mic pairs for a while, I decided it would be simpler for me to get an xy stereo mic for my current uses (general field recording with brief voiceovers via a directional mic). I use a rycote ball and fuzzy on it and it sounds great. Low noise overall, the stereo field is as I would expect from an XY setup and while it's probably $400 buyer's placebo, the field feels wider than other XYs I've tried. The only complaint I have is very very minor: the logo/model name battery tube does not align with the axis of the microphone, so with a windshield on it is difficult to align correctly. Nothing a dot with a sharpie couldn't fix, but I prefer not to mark my equipment if I don't have to!

Working great since 2005

I bought this about 2005 and it has worked great. The only complaint I have is the foam windscreen is now disentegrating into fine black dust. Always stored in a moisture free case indoors when not in use. If you need a sterio mic I recommend this one. Now I'm going to find another screen

Can I use my Zoom F3 to supply phantom power to the AT8022?
Asked by: Alby
Also, to preserve your F3 battery, the 8022 has a single AA to provide phantom power to itself and a single alkaline will last you astonishing 700! hours per battery, so if you use lithiums with quadruple the capacity of an alkaline, you could probably run this for a few months non-stop before needing a new battery in the mic and never bother with phantom power on your F3. Just a thought... BTW, I have an F3 and really considering this mic for ambient nature recording.

question

I bought this mic assuming that XY configurations were always at 90 or 120 degrees. But this seems to be 180 degrees (mics pointing completely sideways). I want to record rock and jazz concerts - is this the best mic configuration for my use?
Asked by: Eric
The Audio-Technica AT8022 uses a coincident capsule configuration in order to produce and X/Y stereo image in a small housing. This mic is great for recording live music. The key is distance and a good focal point. The X-Y technique offers little to no benefit if you're too close to the source. Experiment different distances; and this all varies from venue to venue.

question

I would like to us this on my camcorder or cannon 5d would I need Audio-Technica - AT8415 Universal Shock Mount and what else to form a hot shoe mount? Thanks Phylyp Wagner
Asked by: Anonymous
I will add that although it's not shown in the picture, the included mic mount comes with a hot shoe adapter. So you can use this mic on your camera with just what is included in the box. I have done this on a tripod when not zooming in and out and it works fine. That said it's just an adapter, not a shock mount, so depending on your use, you may want to buy one of the mounts suggested by others.
