I bought this camera to take on a trip to CA because I love taking photos from the plane but don't want to bother with my DSLR for that, but after using it on the trip, I know that it will be the camera I take with me everywhere.
The picture quality is great, it is super easy to use, and fits easily into a small handbag or even evening bag. I've had a Canon G9 for a couple of years, and it has mostly been sitting on my kitchen counter. I never managed to get crisp, non-noisy photos out of it, and it is too large and heavy to drag around.
I ended up using the Panasonic every day on my vacation (in addition to my DSLR) and I am thrilled with the results.
If I had to find one fault with it, it would be the lack of a viewfinder. It's sometimes hard to see on the screen what you're shooting if you're out in bright sunlight. Shutter and aperture priority would have been nice too, but I knew it didn't have that when I bought it, and if I desperately need to shoot that way, I'll just use my DSLR.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 Digital Camera (Black):
I used this recently on a trip across seas and it was perfect. It was small enough to carry in a purse or even a jacket pocket. I was able to zoom in on some awesome candid shots. I especially like the "burst" setting in which you can capture shots quickly. . .perfect for sporting events and action shots. Even in low light settings, this camera took awesome photos. I was taking pics of my newborn niece and my sister now has so many pics to choose from b/c the camera did such a good job. Clear, photos. . ..easy to use. . . .lots of options. . . and an amazing zoom .... all in this little camera! I previously used a Nikon SLR and the flash went bad so this is a perfect camera for me while I search for a different camera for professional use.. .for everyday things and special events. . . .I highly recommend this camera - it takes great pictures!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 Digital Camera (Black):
I purchased this camera for outdoor photography and snapshots. I wanted a small camera with maximum zoom. At 12X it's probably the most magnification available in this type of camera. I've taken great photos of birds, some at great distances. Enlargements come out great. It's light, takes really sharp pictures, and is easy to use. Honestly, I haven't had time to read the manual. I'm sure it is capable of doing amazing things.
There are two negatives. The setting dial is too loose. I have to check the setting each time I take the camera out to use. Often it's moved on it's own. Annoying but not tragic. Also, the time between shots is kind of long. Not good for action photography, but I didn't really expect that it would be...but I had hoped it might.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 Digital Camera (Black):
I purchased this camera, because I wanted to have a small pocket-size one, with high mpx and zoom. And I'm fully satisfied with my choice. The camera has a lot of useful functions, easy to use, even with one hand in some cases. There are more types of multiple picture taking methods, and a great focus-following macro. (Ideal for animal shots.) Things that are not so great about it I can't pull out, although there are some totally unnecessary functions as well (like lots of slideshow choices). I wish the case would be metal, not plastic, but it still looks fairly stable. Sometimes it wants to be too smart, but in general I'm very satisfied with my choice, it's a great everyday pocket-camera.

I don't routinely carry my bag, DSLR, lenses and accessories unless I know that I am going to have photo opportunities. So, I do routinely carry a compact point and shoot digital camera. This Lumix DMC-ZS1 is my most recent choice for serendipity duty. Perfect size, wide range zoom and shooting options galore.

This Camera has been a good replacement for my potable pocket camera. It' snot a portable as my old camera but the lens makes up for the added bulk. Battery life has been very good as well.

I do mainly wildlife photography and live in rural Montana where you never know what you might run across. I also own a DSLR but don't have that with me all the time and wanted something I could always carry with me. The ZS1 fit the bill perfectly. It has a nice long zoom. The picture quality if very good for a point and shoot. It doesn't have those you those purple aberations you get with most point and shoots, and the video is pretty nice. And if you familiar with other point and shoot cameras its very easy to use.

Easy handling, improved dials, great features, superbe optics therefore fantastic zoom, quick & easy download, and now HD vids. All in the palm of my hand. Use it most of the time instead of the heavier SLR as soooo easy in quick situations.

I am not a serious photagrapher, but am going to go overseas shortly and the only camera I had was the Pentax Optio S that I bought about 6 years ago.
This camera is great. The zoom is phenomenal, and picture quality is definately acceptable from a camera this size. The physical construction feels very good - I expect this camera to last longer than it's technical life span. Low light pictures are not great if zoom is used, but that is to be expected.
From time of power on to the time you can take a picture is 4 sec, and the flash recharge time is a bit longer than I had hoped. There is also more lag time from when you hit the shutter button til it takes the picture than I had hoped, but all in all, a great camera.

Although I've had this camera but a few weeks and I haven't utilized it fully, what I have done so far has been vg. BTW, I gave it 4 stars as I felt it should have included a small "starter" card and a power plug-in would have been nice for transferring photos. Also, the shutter release button could protrude a bit for better tactile control.I got a respectable hand-held shot of the moon during a very early clear-sky dusk. [...]

I just recently bought this great little camera and have been so glad I did. I think it is the perfect travel camera. Recently my wife and I even used it with my Nikon D40 in taking some Wedding photos for a friend. It came in handy and we got some great candid shots with it. I am very happy with it wide array of functions and ability to take all kinds of photos.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 Digital Camera (Black):
Lumix has everything I want in a point and shoot. First and foremost is the responsive zoom lens, that quickly goes from wide angle to telephoto. Sometimes a little too quickly so I'd have to back it up a bit, but I'd rather have that problem than something that responds too slowly.
The camera body is compact but solid. The lens is covered with a thin, retractable metal cover, so I'd like to see something a little more substantial on that, but it's at least as good as on any other camera.
I recently took the camera to Europe and the zoom lens made this the easiest trip I've every photographed. There's no viewfinder so the battery is used for framing shots. I took about 150 pictures before needing to recharge the battery. That includes a lot of zooming, framing shots, and reviewing previous shots. All in all, fairly decent battery life.
Uploading to the computer was a breeze with the supplied PC software.
The camera menus are pretty intuitive, but there are a lot of crazy icons so you'll have to refer to the 100+ page manual to figure things out. I learned everything I needed quickly, and will save the rest for a rainy day.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 Digital Camera (Black):
The camera is built very well. Everything feels solid. The tripod mount is metal unlike in most P&S which is plastic. The viewfinder is large. I do not mind having a viewfinder, because I would hardly use it anyway. The picture quality is quite good, at least in normal lighting situations. And I like the fact that it has a 12x zoom. There is some barrel distortion at the widest focal length, which is common on most all zoom lens.
Two things I do not like: somewhat long shutter lag (common with P&S) and grainy picture quality in low light. Longest shutter speed is just 1 second, which also makes low light shooting difficult.

My wife and I use this camera for hiking, around the house, travel.
Very good picture quality.
Surprisingly good pictures in low light. Outside is good, inside is great, flash is pretty powerful.
The combo optical/digital image stabilization works very well.
Powerful zoom.
Realistic color tones.
Has 2 dial settings for frequently used modes. The "AI" quick mode is what we've used mostly, and it works really well.
Some shutter lag, but that comes with digitals.
The battery is slower to charge than I expected.

It's great to have a small, light and good price camara with Leica lenses that you can take everywhere. Also I love to take pictures while ciclying and it's perfect cause it's a system to stabilize the image and a nice 12x zoom.
For me it's the perfect camara to travel with it doesn't matter if it's a cultural or a sport travelling.
