The SX200 fulfills my dream list of digital camera features in a small, well conceived and beautifully executed package. Super macro, wide angle and 12X Zoom, manual controls and well considered scene modes perform stunningly well.
This is a camera with enough options to allow you to explore and grow as a photographer. Out of the box, a new user will be able to create impressive photographs. A more experienced user will really appreciate the quality of the design and technology, as well as the depth of creative control.
This is a nimble camera that you will want to have with you every day, which also means that you will be prepared, camera in hand, to take pictures that you might otherwise have missed.
I love the zoom and the super macro modes. Using the zoom, and not entering others' personal space, I have shot some portraits that I treasure. The smallness is not just a factor for portability and convenience, the SX200 is also a friendlier looking and less intrusive camera than the heavier, bulkier, and more "serious" looking SLRs and hybrids. I have found that people are more relaxed around a less imposing camera.
I know people who rave about their SLR's image quality, but they shoot more valuable images (quantity and quality) with their "second" camera -- the one they are more likely to be toting. If you are looking for a "second" camera, consider that it could become your go-to camera, and then do your own comparisons -- unless you really use all the extra lenses and gear that most SLR users shlep with them (or leave behind).
I have been shooting digital images since the olden days of very expensive one megapixel cameras. I have enjoyed the evolution of the technology. The intelligence that has been applied in developing the SX200 is staggering.
I am a visual artist: painter and designer with an MFA from Pratt and a BFA from RISD. I care about quality, color, good tools and good design. I work in paint, with computer imaging and print -- natural media and and photography, inkjet and commercial presses.
The quality of the12+ megapixel images is ample enough to create large sharp inkjet prints and for commercial print reproduction. The SX200 helps me make better images.
In the process of considering which camera to purchase, I did my research. I considered the Canon G10, having used a friend's -- and concluded that the camera raw feature of the G10 was less important to me than the generous optical zoom, compactness, lightness and other advantages of the SX200. I crosschecked specifications, downloaded and read the owner's manual, spent days perusing digital camera review pages and user comments -- pro and con -- and I became even more adept at reading between the lines. I read about competing cameras, and having owned other brands,I keep returning, with relief to the brilliance of the Canons. I weighed the evidence, and my needs, and then made my choice. With some hesitation I bought the SX200.. Now that it has arrived, I am quite impressed and pleasantly surprised by all that is possible with my Canon SX200. It is a good choice for me. It does all that I need, and more.
Oh, I'm an old fashioned girl: I bought the black one.

The first and the most most most important thing that I would mention about this camera is that the picture quality is not so great....I had more expectations. My SX10IS (or even an old canon A series cam) used to give far far far more clear, crisp and lively pics than this one.....i am talking about the auto mode here. The colors dont seem vibrant and generally the pics look little washed out and drab. I am speaking from an amateur's perspective here. This is my main area of concern. Other useful points are as below:
Pros: Good Image stabilization , good low light performance (noise is considerably less), very compact yet with megazoom, bright LCD, light weight, good battery performance, good video quality.
Cons:Not so great picture quality, flash is in a really awkward position, the slot for HDMI and A/V cable has a very flimsy and poor quality plastic cover (I am always scared of breaking it),little slow (considerable lag between two successive shots),no optical zoom in video mode, the pictures look nice n bright on LCD but when downloaded on computer it kind of washes out
Summing it up....overall the camera is mostly fine in all respects but since it fails in the primary functionality of a camera i.e picture quality, I would say that it falls below my expectations.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX200 IS Digital Camera (Black):
Many years ago I had an Olympus OM-1 outfit, so I know something about cameras. I like my SX200is a lot. The build quality is very good. Image quality is, let's say, very acceptable on the low end and really good on the high end. The layout of the controls is totally logical.
There's no optical zoom during video shots, but that's not a minus for me. Just having that 12x optical zoom is a welcome luxury. And yes, that pop-up flash can get in the way when not needed. Do what I do- hold it down with a piece of tape when doing available light shots. No damage will result to the mechanism. I never leave the house without this SX200 camera in my bag.
I just got another refurbished SX200 unit for my sister. Refurbished has three grades- A,B, and C. Grade "A" has no scratches or blemishes.
Yes, there are other, more expensive, cameras that excel beyond the SX200. But until you're ready to spend $400+, this camera has enough quality and capability to keep you very happy.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX200 IS Digital Camera (Black):
This camera has an amazing quality for it's price. The video works fine and it is great as secondary camcorder.
However recording only works in 1152 : 648 resolution. So if you are working with 1080i / 1080p footage it might infect the quality of your final product when rendering.
Another thing I noticed is that the pop-up flash sometimes gets in your way when holding and the video playback on the camera is difficult.
The Canon PowerShot SX200 IS has a big display and 12X optical zoom. Face recognition works (almost) every time. 4 Self timers. Good P mode features.
This really is a magnificent camera for hobby photographers or Semi-pro Photographers.

[...] I am a Canon fan and have recommended Canon to all my friends. This is the second time I am buying SX200 as a gift. Image quality, Video quality (for the price), size ..is all great! Auto focus if good and in macro mode too. Cons:User Interface for deleting image is hard to navigate, But useful if you need to select multiple images and delete.Flash of top left with auto pop, tough for some who hold the point & shoot with left hand too.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX200 IS Digital Camera (Black):
This is actually our 2nd purchase of an SX200 IS. Bought one for my 18 year old son in Mar '09. After using it for a year, my wife wanted one as well. We have a Canon 40D for heavy duty work, which we love, but it can't go everywhere with us. The SX200 can. The zoom adds significant versatility to the camera. You need good lighting to max out the zoom, but we took long range shots at a daylight pro football game from the upper deck that were outstanding. Some have commented about the size, but to me, any smaller and this camera might become difficult to hold. The body is thicker on the shutter side and single-hand hold is pretty easy. Pics are very sharp for a small camera, and the pop-up flash, once you get used to it coming up automatically, has good range and works well. On 'Auto' with brightly lit backgrounds, the flash fills foreground objects automatically and makes for some great shots in tough lighting conditions. The SX200 IS also has an 'auto find' feature for faces in a shot. Honestly, I haven't read to understand how it works, but it finds and focuses on faces in the viewfinder quickly, again helping us take excellent images and making it very easy. The LCD screen is bright and sharp enough for most any lighting conditions. Battery life, to me, is very good. Don't have a backup and don't need one. Video isn't high def, but still very nice. Sound on video is probably the weakest aspect of the camera, as built.
We've bought two. If we needed one, I'd buy another. Good work by Canon on this camera.

I use this as an amatuer photographer. It is very easy to use and understand. The picture quality is great. The zoom is awesome. Only one small issue, the flash pops up under your left hand while holding...I hope its well built. I wonder over time if this will cause the motor to break. Low light is OK but nor great. Great economical camera at a great price from B&H.

I've had several Canon Elph's and Powershots and they've all been great. I got this one because of the long zoom lens but all of the other features did not disappoint me... I really love it. The only con is that the automatic flash raises up right where I usually hold the camera but It's not really a biggie.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX200 IS Digital Camera (Black):
I bought it as an alternative to my Nikon Coolpix 8800. I wanted something with comparable megapixel capacity and zoom but without the bulk. In general, the Canon seems to do the job, but its limitations, even as a snapshot camera, are worth mentioning for the guidance of potential purchasers.
Drawbacks: (1) perhaps the most important is the lack of a viewfinder. It limits the lighting situations in which the camera can be used and increases the susceptibility to camera movement, particularly when using high zoom settings. The latter problem is the result of having always to hold the camera away from one's face to view the screen, rather than against the forehead.
2. The size itself makes it very convenient to carry, but for a large man with large hands makes it somewhat awkward to handle and focus. It is almost TOO small, at least for me.
3. Shutter lag time is comparable to that of other digitals, as my numerous shots of animal rumps disappearing into the bush will testify.
On the positive side, the performance is pretty much as advertised, and image quality is quite good. For a serious digital photographer, which I am emphatically not, I would recommend it only as a SUPPLEMENT, rather than a substitute, for a more substantial camera with a viewfinder. For a casual snapshooter such as myself, it works well enough, provided one takes the trouble to make more than one exposure of the same scene for insurance purposes - but this is easy, particularly with a large-capacity SD card.
Battery life is marginal, and I strongly recommend carrying a fully charged spare at all times.
I recently used the camera on a five-week trip to Australia and got fair results, particularly of wildlife photos, but enjoyed the convenience of having it always with me without the heavy Nikon's tendency to bang about on the neck strap.

I was looking for a point and shoot camera that my husband and kids could easily use but also one that would allow me some creative control with manual settings. This camera with the 12x optical zoom gives great telephoto range and with the 12.1 mega pixels you have lots of substance to work with when editing. I find myself using this camera more often than not, for those family snap shots. You can't go wrong with this camera.

Extremely easy to learn how to use. Great buy for what you get. Auto is the easiest mode and photos look as any I have ever taken with a digital camera. Love the way you can see the image in very low light. 12X zoom the best I've had in a digital camera. Get a 8gig card and the picture are endless.[...] There price was the best around. Would definately purchase again.

I use the camera for all types off pictures. Very general use. It does everything I need it to do. It's a simple piont and shoot that is fairly compact and has a great optical zoom. The picture quality is good. The only problem is the flash. It pops up where you hold the camera. Its not that big of deal and is easy to get used to.
