I have a mixed environment of MAC and PC at home, and needed a central NAS solution for backups, central file storage, and music repository. The My Book World Edition has been a great solution. The MAC found the bounjour service and recognized the data location without any issue. I had some trouble installing the PC setup from the CD, but just downloaded the software from the WD site and ran it from there. After installing, I opted to use the native MAC TimeMachine software (Snow Leopard), and just pointed it to the NAS. No problem. I opted to use the included WD backup software for my 2 PCs (Win 7 and XP)- again, it's working like a charm.

I also have a PS3, and the included media server on the WD NAS was a bonus feature. It streams directly from the NAS to the PS3- no setup required (just copy your music to the appropriate MUSIC folder on the NAS and search for music servers on the PS3. Done.) The NAS also has some admin features, like emailing when the system goes down.

After getting this one- I realized that 2TB was probably not enough. I'd go for the 4TB next time.

On the down side- the power cable can be knocked loose somewhat easily if you aren't careful, and there isn't a wall mount solution- so I had to put it in the cabinet with my PS3, rather than wall mounted with my router and cable modem where it belongs (Not a big problem.) If you want to restrict space by device you can (or more specifically by user, which you can configure on each device), but the setup for this isn't as intuitive. You'll need to figure this out so the backup space doesn't grow too large (as some backups will just continue up to the amount of space they have). I can't recall if the included WD backup has a setting for this or not. Finally, the included WD software isn't a "disaster recovery" solution- but this is more of a function of your OS anyway.

I'd recommend this product for the ease of setup, sufficient space, cross platform, intuitive backup software, and nice additions to the NAS side services which make media sharing actually useful.

I love Western Digital products. However, MyBook World edition was an unnecessary headache. I need to backup more than one Mac using TimeMachine. MyBook World wouldn't acknowledge multiple backups and the pre-installed folder system does not delete, only deactivates which makes connecting to the actual World Book unstable. It is also not easy to setup for this reason. Disk Utility on a Amc wouldn't recognize it via ethernet connection too.

I would recommend MyBook World if you need a DLNA HDD, but otherwise it's unnecessary. Instead, I bought Western Digital's 2TB Element external HDD inconjunction with Apple Airport Extreme router and everything is flawlessly working with multiple Mac backups.

Comments about Western Digital 2TB My Book World Edition External Hard Drive:

I am a user with intermedia knowledge of hardware and software. What I found frustrating about this product is that supplied software is quite difficult to use. I had issues with WD discovery (thanks to google I've managed to sort it out) and also with online configuration utility. The issues are not that big but it is just anoying that after spenfing couple of hunderd of dollars you have to go through the pain of setting the thing to work. Also I do not like that they charge for the upgrade of backup software.

On the positive side, the unit looks great, it is very quite and cold to touch. I didn't have a time to check the speed and reliability.

All in all, it is ok but not ideal.

Comments about Western Digital 2TB My Book World Edition External Hard Drive:

I bought this unit primarily for running a custom linux distro on it. Essentially, I overlayed Gentoo linux over the default OS, and killed off all daemons which came with it. The unit is running OpenAFS and GlusterFS servers, and I'm loving it ! It's a bit slow at about 5MB/sec (hey, it's a 2 Watt CPU), but otherwise no complaints.

For the money this product meets my needs; to have a central repository for all my backups and important files. Easy to setup in Win 7 or XP. I haven't tried the remote access yet.
I recommend this product with 4 stars because a gigabit network adapter would be awesome rather than 100mbps.

Comments about Western Digital 2TB My Book World Edition External Hard Drive:

I intended the HD to do double duty as the backup drive for my home networked computers and also as a network drive to share\store files more easily. SO far it has done that very well.

Installation was painless with one exception and that was mapping the drive from one of the older machines. Make sure to map the path and it's a slick little setup. The instructions included are sparse and downloading a pdf didn't show the mapping solution either. It's not hard, but you may have to talk to your resident expert.

All in all, I am very happy with the ease of use, ease of installation and ease of access.

Comments about Western Digital 2TB My Book World Edition External Hard Drive:

It took me a couple days to configure it exactly how I wanted it. I plugged it into my network and my Macbook Pro had no problem finding it and accessing it, wired and wireless. My Windows 7x64 desktop was different however. It took a while to find it without the packaged software, so I installed it and it popped right up. Once I mapped all the shares, and disabled the energy saving options on the drive, spin-up times were causing lag and I'm impatient, I had quick easy access. The security features for the shares are pretty cool, though I haven't tried connecting my 360 to a protected share yet.

What bugs me is that this is supposed to be Western Digital's newer home NAS drive, and the website support it TERRIBLE. The drive shipped with a newer version of the software than is on the site; WD's site looks like it hasn't been updated in almost a year for this product. There is a large community for addition additional software to the drive, but it requires some serious linux knowledge to get it to do everything you want it to.
          In summary...

          Pros:
Is it a good recommendable NAS? Yes. Size is great and it was cheap.

          Cons:
Support is awedul, and its not raided.

          Bottom Line:
If you aren't afraid of a bit of setup and maintenance, get this drive.

One word of caution is that the device can only be assigned within a single network address range, and for remote /VPN users; mapped drives will not be accessible after establishing a VPN connection.

I have a small home wireless network with several computers on it, and recently one of those computers died without warning causing me to lose some saved files. This event prompted me to look for an inexpensive network backup device that would prevent another such disaster. I was especially worried about my 19-year-old godson's files. My godson lives with me and has an extensive i-Tunes library which he has spent lots of his hard-earned money to acquire over the past five or six years. The Book World seems to be perfect for this. It took several days to backup all the stuff on both our computers, but the Book World is now constantly working in the background to update those backups. You can even access your backup files via a remote computer using the Mionet service Western Digital provides free of charge. The only thing I was not too happy with is the backup software itself. It's not all that user-friendly to a novice[...]. All in all, though, I'm very happy with this product.

Comments about Western Digital 2TB My Book World Edition External Hard Drive:

I use this Drive for streaming music, videos, and system backups. It is easy to setup. It works well with our Windows 7 PC's. I recommend downloading the latest software from WD. Over all it is a really good device.

I installed it on my wireless network and it was a very easy instalation. My destop computer is completely set up with the continious backup, itunes server, and remote access. I have had problems with my laptop because I have not been able to configure the firewall to accept the the hard drive. The hard drive is very quiet and fast.

Comments about Western Digital 2TB My Book World Edition External Hard Drive:

Unit is on my house network. Holds pictures and common household files (we have 2 LAN connected desktops and 1 wireless laptop).

Ease to install. Plugs into router. Included CD has software to connect drive to each of your machines.

Existing older router and ethernet cards on machines limit throughput to 54 Mbps. Hence, data transfers are a little slow and opening a picture with picture manager is not instantaneous (instead of taking 2-3 seconds, now takes 5-8 seconds). Plan to upgrade router and ethernet cards for Gigabit transfer rates. This should significantly improve data transfer performance.

This product was very easy to set up integrate into my home network. You simply load the software on each PC and it will back up the data you designate to My Book World Edition Ext HDD. The RAID setup ensures your data is safe. I have 4 PCs that back up data to this unit. I would highly recommend it.
