My Dual Xeon MacPro 1,1 shipped with the 512 MB ATI XT1900 almost three years ago. In the last 6 months, the card was revving up the fans many times a day for no apparent reason. After reading reviews here and on Apple.com, I pulled the trigger on the 4870. My advice for you guys with original MacPros - DO IT! The 4870 is quiet and noticably quicker in Photoshop, Lightroom and InDesign. I'm extremely happy that I chose to upgrade to this card.

Despite that that I have put this graphic card on MacPro 2.1 (2007) It works perfectly.
Now problems with mine AJA Kona 3 and Apple Color have disappeared and they are well combined.

Comments about Apple ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Early 2008 or 2009):
The original video card in my Early 2008 PowerMac went bad, so this was the most economical replacement I could find. Easy to install and I was back in business in minutes. I didn't really need the boost in video power but I've noticed window display is a little snappier. There is a heavy fan sound on startup though.

Seems to work fine, not quite as fast as I was hoping. Maya runs smoothly with no issues so far, much better than my old GeForce card.
