The Nikon D5000 (Body Only) digital SLR incorporates numerous pro-quality imaging technologies normally found in pricier Nikon DSLRs in a smaller, less-expensive Nikon DX-format camera body. Key among these features are the same 12.9 megapixel CMOS sensor found in the Nikon D90, High-Definition video capture (with sound), a 2.7" variable-angle LCD, Live View for composing stills or video from most any point-of-view, an 11-point autofocus system with Focus Tracking, and 3D Color Matrix II metering.
Other advanced Nikon features found in the D5000 include the ability to shoot in RAW, 3 levels of JPEG compression, or RAW+JPEG image capture, burst-rates up to 4 fps, an EXPEED image processor, and a 3-tier dust-removal system.
AVI-format video clips can be captured at 3 levels of compression in lengths up to 20 minutes with the ability to apply exposure compensation when shooting in Program, Shutter-priority, Aperture-priority, and Manual modes.
Depending on your needs, exposure information along with a grid screen for image composition can be displayed on the camera's multi-position LCD when shooting in Live View mode.
The Nikon D5000 is optimized for use with all AF-S and AF-I NIKKOR lenses and works with select functionality when used with Nikon Type G, D, AI-P, and non-CPU-series optics.

I got this as a replacement camera for my wife's D-100. We take cameras everywhere we go and this is much easier to manage than my D2x. I thought it would make a nice Christmas Present for my wife. Its a great little camera. Menus are intuitive. similar to my D2x. It takes great short videos. There are a lot of camera presets available for different subjects that are easy to use and understand. Tons of professional features in a very tiny package.
With both of us shooting with Nikons already, we had over a half dozen high-end Nikon lens' so I just purchased the body. Unfortunately most of our lens arsinal didnt work with this camera, you need to have an AF-S or it won't autofocus.
The on-camera flash is small and works as well as to be expected. Better results and more control if you get a speedlight

I am a semi-professional photographer and I am in the process of upgrading my equipment. I just bought the d5000 to replace my d40, and I am very unsatisfied. In my opinion it is the imaging sensor. I think my d40 with the CCD imaging sensor produced better images. The d5000 has the new CMOS imaging sensor which is supposed to be better, but I think the colors and over all image looks dark and dull compared to my d40. I would love to return it and get the d3000 with a CCD imaging sensor, but because I took over 200 exposures, it is considered used, and non-returnable.

Comments about Nikon D5000 Digital SLR Camera (Camera Body):
I own a small photography business and I bought the D5000 (referbished) because I needed a decent back up camera and I could not afford anohter D90. I love it, it's a great little grab and go. I leave one of my kit lens on it all the time and it's always ready. In the past I didn't care for the "tilt" LCD, didn't seem nessary, until my last photo shoot where I needed to hold my camera well above my head to grab a croud shot... this time I could see what I was photogrphinhg... great beginner camera or as a back up camera for photographers. Love it.

The price makes this a great camera for beginners to start off with. The D5000 has enough features to learn on, and a price that will allow you to spend more on glass.

This is a solidly built camera & easy to use. Just casual & vacation photos. Only negative would be when you add a larger lens, it gives the camera extra weight to lug around, but that is a good thing in itself because you know you have a camera that will last a long time. I consider Nikon the best.

Comments about Nikon D5000 Digital SLR Camera (Camera Body):
I borrowed a D5000 from a friend for a car show and decided to get my own before the next event. I got this camera on Monday and went to the show Thursday basically getting a crash course in ISO, shutter speed, and F/stop from the internet in the 2 days between. I have been VERY happy with the pictures I've gotten once I finally understood how everything relates and I've taken over 3000 images in the first week of owning it. the Auto feature was incredibly useful the 2nd day of the show as over 2/3 of my pictures were blurry from day 1 where I was trying to 'manually' get things the way I wanted. Once I learned how to get focus correctly in manual mode, the number of useable images I got tripled! Takes great night images, but the lowest fstop on my lens was 3.5, so I had to use an ISO of 3200 which you can see the grain in it. any iso lower than 2000 was absolutely perfect, and I've since gotten a fixed power 50mm lense with a F1.8 that takes beaufitul indoor low light pictures with an ISO around 800-1200. no grain at all in that sensitivity! I recommend starting with the AUTO setting or Auto with no flash until you learn kind of where the camera thinks it should be and grow from there!
My only complaint is that the max MP is 12.2 in RAW which if I want to make a larger images wouldn't be good for anything over 18" but at the price point (read: I got it for under $350), and since the camera is pushing 5 years old now I am VERY happy and think now that the price on the D5000s are less than the new D3100 (which is techincally a superior camera) its a great place to start for a beginner who wants to learn but doesn't want $1000 wrapped up in their initial equipment. I got this and 3 lenses (2 manual older ones and a used 18-55 'kit' AF-S lens it came with new for less than the price of the new D3100 AND since BH Photo sold it refurbished, the camera came with everything a new one had! Charger, strap, big fat instruction manual, and a battery!

The refurbished body came in perfect condition. It didn't look used at all. Quite a step up from the D50 I have used since 2004. Free shipping too! Great price.

The d5000 is an awesome digital slr camera,it has lots of unique settings to experiment with and makes learning digital photography fun,the auto exposure bracketing on this model is what sold me!i've had the Nikon D3000 AND was not at all happy with it because there's no movie settings or bracketing,so I RETURNED it to the store and did some research on some other cameras in my price range and quality,so IWAS READING UP ON THE NIKON D5100 EXCEPTIONAL CAMERA BUT NOT IN MY PRICE RANGE WAY TO MUCH FOR ME,THEN I CAME ACROSS THE REFURBISHED NIKON D5000 WITH ALMOST THE SAME QUALITY AS THE D5100 AND BOUGHT IT,THE REFURBISHED CAMERA HAS A 90 DAY WARRANTY AND IS IN PERFECT CONDITION ALTHOUGH ALL I HAVE IS ONE LENS AT THE MOMENT AND ITS NOT AUTO FOCUS IT'S THE NIKOR 70-300 G LENS BUT DON'T GET ME WRONG IT TAKES VERY GOOD PICTURES IN MANUAL MODE,WHEN I CAN AFFORD IT I'LL BUY THE RIGHT LENSES FOR THE CAMERA THANK YOU AND I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS CAMERA TO A FRIEND OR ANYONE LOOKING TO BUY !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought this camera to take pictures of landscape and wildlife. It has been wonderful. I have been able to take many photos of birds and ocean views with waves crashing in the background with literally no effort. The movie feature has taken fantastic photos.
I do wish that in live view the camera would focus more quickly when taking still photos. It operates fine in the movie mode.

I love the compact package of great features, especially the live view and video mode. The flip screen is useful, although could have more range of motion. Picture quality has been excellent. Menu navigation seems easy enough, similar to other Nikon models. I would recommend this for avid photographers who don't want to spend a lot on a professional camera.

Comments about Nikon D5000 Digital SLR Camera (Camera Body):
I'm using this camera as a gap-filler until I can get a D800 or 5D mkII. It has fantastically-low noise, even at 3200. The colors are good- on par with other equivalents. Sharpness is lacking, but that could be my lens. The D5000 is very feature-rich- much more than Canon. It's reasonably user-friendly, though more direct buttons would be nice. Oh, and the LCD is awful!

The sensor's ability to produce a useable image in less than optimal light conditions is poor. Compared to images I get from my P&S Lumix cameras, the Nikon does not measure up. Also this camera really needs IS. My old D50 takes better photos.

I had a d40 that worked well but I wanted to move up to something with video. the. amera has the same easy to use features and interface as the d40, with increased resolution. The HD resolution is sufficient for nice video.. the only thing that isn't perfect are the video controls. Later models have a red record button. The erase button could have been placed in a more easy to interact position on the camera. Overall I love it.

Comments about Nikon D5000 Digital SLR Camera (Camera Body):
This is my first DSLR after researching the subject for 2 years. understanding that there was a factory recall on a number of this model. The fact that this one had already been factory refurbished was something I was looking for specifically, and so far, it's worked flawlessly!
It takes amazing photographs, the articulated screen is awesome, and being able to shoot in live view is something I've been waiting to become affordable to me.
This camera, being factory refurbished, and maybe, the effect of the recall on demand for this model basically makes it possible to get a camera at nearly HALF of what equivalent cameras of other models are going for!
Sure, the D5100 Might be a little nicer, but yea, this one DEFINITELY does everything I want it to and more. for almost half the price. I'm VERY happy with my purchase, and B&H photo had this thing packed beautifully, and shipped as quickly as is perceptibly possible.

i bought the camera on a whim noticing a good deal. I had intended to buy a D90 but figured for now this will do. It's a great camera and even refurbished shoots amazing, but as for some one looking for a bit more user driven creativity and less reliance on the cameras pre-set functions, i would recommend a few steps up, you can run out of new buttons to play with if your fairly advanced in photography. But if your a beginner and want a great easy to use, easy to learn camera, It will work just great.
