I'm fairly new to DSLR photography and this is my first prime lens and whilst I probably don't yet have a sufficiently critical eye, I have to say I feel I'm getting excellent results so far, both for macro and landscape photography. One photo in particular, an extremely close-up shot of a beautiful red rose, really had the WOW factor for me and allowed me to feel I was making progress. I really like this lens and feel it's very reasonably priced.

Very good quality but for a 2.8 lens, it's dark. I had 3 lights on a macro object and open at 2.8 but it just seem as if it was not getting any light.Compared to the 50mm and 100mm, this lens is just plain dark. Built quality is cheap as it is [*]. Also, it is 30mm so you really have to get close to the object to get a 1:1 ratio.

One of the best values in optics that I have ever encountered, Fast auto focus with range limiter, truely crisp and sharp images are possible with this in expensive lens. 45MM on a "C" sensor camera. Great all around performance.

IF YOU WANT CLOSE QUALITY IMAGES THAN THIS IS YOUR LENSE....IF YOU EXPECT THIS LENSE TO DOUBLE AS A QUALITY LANDSCAPE OR PORTRAIT LENSE FORGET IT. THIS LENSE PRODUCES VERY SHARP HIGH QUALITY IMAGES IN MANUAL FOCUS AT DISTANCES AS CLOSE AS 1 CM. IT IS AN ABSOLUTE STEAL FOR UNDER 200.00 DOLLARS......IF YOU WANT A PORTRAIT OR LANDSCAPE LENSE, GO BUY ONE......

Comments about Sony SAL-30M28 30mm f/2.8 DT AF Macro Lens for Alpha & Minolta Digital SLRs:
I needed a lens that is light weight; good wide angle for indoor gatherings; takes a fine macro as I use it as a notepad to remember labels (from bottles to posters); And it had to be 2.8 or better for low light. All of that was found in this inexpensive lens.
I have added a Sony x0.7 converter that I had from my previous Sony. So in effect it is a 21M28 now which covers a very wide range indoors.

Comments about Sony SAL-30M28 30mm f/2.8 DT AF Macro Lens for Alpha & Minolta Digital SLRs:
I am very disappointed with the auto focus of this lens. I get good focus on about 10% of the macro photos I take with it. The rest are terribly blurry. I have been very happy with my results from other lenses, so this lens is definitely the problem.

This is an inexpensive Macro that you can take pictures from about 5 inches away. I use it to take pictures of stuff I am selling at online auction sites. I've had some good success with some macro shots and this also takes pretty good portraits as an added bonus. Not bad for $200.

I use it with my Sony DSLRs and It's Wonderful lens with good resolution and contrast.
Would give it 5 stars but the noisy AF (which bothers me sometimes) made me give it 4 stars instead.

I use this lens with a dedicated ring light for nature macro photos of insects, small flowers and mushrooms. Results so far have been very good. Without the supplemental lighting, a faster lens would be required, such as f/1.4 or faster.

This is a must buy for the photographer on a budget. The image quality is really good for the price you pay and the shots come out good. The working distance is quite short, but I haven't run into any major problems with getting the shots that I want.

Great affordable macro lens that's great for portraits also. Most review always point of the build quality, and yes, it doesn't compare to more expensive lenses, but it's not as bad as some reviews say. For the price, it's a great lens to get into macro photography. Highly recommended.

Sharp photos. Super close-ups; focuses in from 2cm away (the Sony site says 5in for some reason)! AF is difficult at closest range, but MF is no problem.

Comments about Sony SAL-30M28 30mm f/2.8 DT AF Macro Lens for Alpha & Minolta Digital SLRs:
This lens, when cropped into APS-C cameras (non fullframe, that is, every sony camera, except A850 and A900), the viewing angle is the same as a standard 50mm lens. For this, it is great for a walkaround prime lens.
Its Macro capabilities are awesome, if you can afford to go as close as to a few millimeters of your subject (less than an inch, between the focused area and the front element).
Focusing motor is not great, but does not get in the way of the photographer, except for its strange creeky sound.
Not nice 49mm lens threads. Really small.

This is my only prime lens using a digital camera and I am very satisfied with it! Please notice that I am quite picky with lenses and cameras although I do not have a large budget for them. I am delighted that Sony could come up with a lens like this: Consistent, satisfactory, and relatively inexpensive!!!

Comments about Sony SAL-30M28 30mm f/2.8 DT AF Macro Lens for Alpha & Minolta Digital SLRs:
This is my first prime. It's a great lens for the price, and stopped down it doesn't look half bad. For those looking for a Macro lens, I suggest you go for the 50mm; because the distance at which this lens works well in Macro is quite close. For those looking for a good all-rounder to get them started on the road to better photos, this is just the ticket.
