I had the Philips Hopper SV10 before this one, so the quality difference is absolutely astounding. After tweaking the settings I got wonderful detail and clarity, the room does need to be mostly dark though, then the picture really stands out to becomes comparable to the cinema experience. I am definately happy with this purchase. I have a blu-ray player (Philips BDP3000) that displays 1080p @ 24fps, and this is fantastic. However, when I use the standard 1080p @ 60fps, I get flashing images alternating between pixel noise and the actual image. It is not the player, I tested it on other HD displays, but I hope it is just a firmware issue (I hope one comes out soon to test). I am using an expensive high-quality AWG22 Cat2 40ft HDMI cable though. But 24fps is fortunately working perfectly for me, so I am very satisfied.

We bought several of these units for classroom use in a film program.
First Impressions: The image quality was in fact good for the price... But we found it extremely difficult to fine-tune the color to broadcast/display standards (although this makes some sense considering the price range).
Later Impressions: Two of the three of our units have gone awry after one year (and less than 300 hours of use). In both cases the units lost their blue channel. We tried changing the bulbs, but this did nothing.
We are simply disappointed that two of our three units have gone down after only a year (>300 hours of use).

Comments about Optoma Technology HD20 1700 ANSI Lumens 16:9 Projector:
About two years ago I purchased an Optoma projector for my home theater. Then I thought it was a great choice over a large TV, especially since we do not always watch TV and we don't like having a box as a focal point in the room at all times.
That being said I loved the previous projector, but it started getting the dreaded "white dot" issue, AKA hot pixels, dead pixels. It started with one, which was annoying enough and within a week there was a nice constalation forming. Since it was out of warantee I decided to replace the projector, rather then have it fixed.
I am actually more pleased with this projector then the older one. Even though the Lumens were less the image is much brighter and clearer. I still am a little worried in the long run if this projector will need to be replaced once its warantee is up, but I still couldn't be happier with a projector over a TV.

15 minutes out of the box the unit displayed vertical lines across the screen. It continues to display them erratically. The unit will be returned or exchanged.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD20 1700 ANSI Lumens 16:9 Projector:
I bought this projector after having had LCD projectors (Sony and Mitsubishi)in the past. I wanted more lumen output and HD. I shortlisted down to this one or the Epson 8350. I chose this one for two reasons: Cost and weight. I have conerns about the weight of the Epson although I do think it a superior product. The Optoma is small and light and it has alot of great controls for making it suitable for semi-controlled lighting conditions. However, it does have some serious limitations. First, the lumen output is still too low for ambient light conditions. I was surprised at how bad the picture is in these conditions. I expected more because this is a DLP projector. In addition, I continue to be disappointed with the lack of lens shift but that is a byproduct of dlp, not this particular projector. If placement flexibility is a factor I would not recommend this or any other dlp projector.... Now, the picture itself is really great. I mean really great! The blacks are super and the color balance is outstanding. This is serious fun to watch. And, there is little to no rainbow due to the 6 segment RGB color wheel. This was important because my spouse and I do experience rainbow: but not with this unit. And did I mention that it is only 6.4lbs? That means that it can be safely mounted using wall mounts that simulate ceiling mounts. And finally price. I got my for [$] and have been very happy. This is a great unit and well worth the money. I will be keeping mine even if I do upgrade but I won't be in a hurry because this is such a good product. Get one before it's too late.

This is my first projector and before buying it I really did quite a bit of study about which one I should go for . My primary purpose was to watch movies on big screen and let my son play games too on bigger screen when he would want . As per my budget I shortlisted Epson 8350 and Optoma but I went for Optoma because of the size and weight which is much lesser than Epson . Let me tell you I was not dissappointed at all after this purchase . The picture quality is excellent and has multiple options for brightness, contrast etc which makes viewing a pleasure . Thank you for everyone's comments which helped me buy this and buying from B&H was excellent experience too . Go for It i would say and you would not be dissappointed. Thanks !

This projector is a great compromise between price, quality and size.
The smallest of the full hd 1080p projectors on the market is till amazing. I was scared of the rainbow effect but the x4 wheel really helps. I still notice the red green and blue rainbow on some specific situation but you really have to be looking for it and I usually am sensitive to this defect.
An optical lens shift would have been greatly appreciated though.

This projector is an excellent value for home theater use. Compared to the Optoma H31 that it replaces in my setup, it is very quiet and considerably brighter. Perfect viewing in a decently light controlled environment. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great HD projector. Works well with movies and video games. I bought this to replace my old Infocus x1 that is now 10 years old. What a difference. It's so quiet you can't hear it. The picture is crisp and sharp and bright. you can't find something better for this amount. We use it instead of a TV in the living room.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD20 1700 ANSI Lumens 16:9 Projector:
Bought the HD20 after scouring reviews. Everything is great, only two comments to add. 1) This unit appears to be designed for a ceiling mount or table top installation ONLY. We have ours mounted on a custom shelf on the back wall of the room above the couch, and the unit has to be tilted down on a 30 degree angle to hit the screen in front of us. We cant do a ceiling mount due to a catherdral ceiling. Theres no way to adjust the image enough in our case to compensate for the projector being on a shelf without tilting it or making a custom bracket to mount the unit upside down on the wall shelf. The last projector TV we had did have settings to compensate for this configuration. It would be adviseable in future versions of this model to include that.2) The entire manual is on disk, no hard copy. My junk HP laptop died again (go figure), so I was stuck going back and forth from my desktop to the living room during setup = pain in the rear. When I decide to buy a [$] piece of equipment I dont mind paying $1 extra to have the manual in hand. It should be in the box ready to use. Makes me worry that they cut corners somewhere else. Time will tell.

Great HD projector, watch its picture on a plain white wall, plenty bright at over 100". Small, quiet and light. Had an HD72 before, am happy with Optoma overall. Hoping this one lasts longer, nice that its half the price with a better picture.
