I wanted a small pocketable camera for those occasions when I don't want to carry around the SLR. Being an SLR user, I was still concerned about image quality though. I was attracted to the accurate colors, sharp focus, lack of lens distortions, and wide angle zoom possible with the DMC-ZR1. I was prepared for the slightly higher noise levels in the Panasonic camera, versus the Canon competition, but to be honest it is not objectionable unless you are determined to look at your pictures at the pixel level. The flash works quite well as long as you are realistic about the power of a small flash, and don't get too far away from your subject. Focusing is quick and accurate. The camera really takes great pictures! Video mode is a new feature for me. It seems to work well enough, and it's nice that the zoom works quietly and smoothly even during video mode. There is no HDMI output though, and the USB video output cable is not included. The camera feels very solid; the body is mostly metal. The lens extends very quickly upon start-up and I noticed no appreciable delays in any of the functions. Overall, I would definitely make the same choice again.

This camera has excellent features for the money. So far, the pictures I've taken have been excellent. I especially love the burst feature for my girls' sporting events and the "transform" scene which makes you look 10 lbs lighter. It's very small and light, easy to slip into a pocket.

I bought this as a point and shoot that my father could use easily. It has some wonderful features that make it not only a good point and shoot for him (including automatic setting adjust (such as switching to night mode at night), but it also has an amazing zoom. For me, it has the ability to allow manual setting of just about anything I want and I kind of wish I had bought it for myself (especially with the hd video ability).

It takes amazing pictures even in low light conditions.
I was in NY and took some pictures during the blizzard and they all came out amazing.
The Intelligent auto mode too works fast and does the job if you don't want to tinker with the manual controls. It's really a shrunk version of the ZS3 which I was also considering but I decided to buy this cuz of its compact size and 12mp sensor and fast speed.
Im so over Canon cameras. Ive had them for years and it was time to move on. YOU JUST CANT BEAT THE LEICA LENS. PERIOD. THIS CAMERA ROCKS AND WILL BUY ANOTHER ONE FOR MY FAMILY MEMBERS TO USE.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1 Digital Camera (Black):
only had this camera a week. Initial impression is a tidy package with a good time-to-first-shot and tolerable shot-to-shot time. The controls are easy to use and the screen crystal clear. The only issue is the first 100 pics we took (kids party) were to my surprise only ok - not as crisp or colorful as I'd hoped. Time playing will confirm is that's just me, but I had it in IA all day....
So far the battery remains full at 150 shots taken....

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1 Digital Camera (Black):
This camera has 8X optical zoom, yet it is very compact. There is an option for you to set the shutter speed as long as 60 seconds which is quite useful for taking pictures of night scenes. However, the face recognition feature might not be too accurate at times, especially for close members of a family where there are much similarities in face features. One of the best camera you can buy at this price range.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1 Digital Camera (Black):
Was looking for a good general use subcompact. Immediately after buying brought it to Costa Rica on vacation traipsing around rainforests and beaches. Overall am thrilled with how it held up and with the pictures it took, especially considering these were very challenging picture-taking conditions for a digital subcompact.
Pros:
-amount of features given size/weight
-12x zoom
-Ability to zoom in/out during video recording (really improves what you can capture)
-Ease of use: as an amateur, I was still able to take some great evening sunset shots and beach shots using the scene modes.
-Overall build, tolerated being bounced around in wet environments very well, LCD is easy to see even in daylight, doesn't get streaky with fingerprints
-Battery life
Cons:
-unsurprisingly, struggles in low-light conditions
-automatic zoom sometimes challenging to focus on the object of interest.
Again, overall I'm extremely happy with the camera and features, especially for the price.

I would surely recommend this product. The best part is the features for its size. A pocket size camera with 8X zoom and wide-angled. It has pretty good picture quality and also image stablization at zoomed levels is pretty good. Worth the money!!!

I bought this to replace a 7.1 megapixel Sony camera. Love this camera as the pictures are very clear and the camera has a much quicker response time between shots. Was surprised at the nice quality of video as well. Camera is very easy to use. Glad I made this purchase. The only con that I can think of is the need to immediately install an SD card. The built in memory held maybe 8 pictures.

I was looking for a high quality compact digital for use indoors. Good quality electronics in conjunction with a leica lens is a tough package to beat. The only downside is that the camera has such extensive capabilities I am still learning how to use it to maximum efficiency. Long range image quality was not what I expected after the first use, however I am not certain if I used it properly.

The camera, as a point and shoot is easy to use when set properly. It could have used a better
glossary and suggestions for use would be most helpful. As a new digital camera owner (novice),
I am unfamiliar with many of the terms and the reasons for choosing different settings. The set up instructions assume the user is familiar with the terminology. Settings for opening, number of pixels, etc. should give suggestions for the choice of these settings.

Had a multi lens Nikon film SLR. Have replaced it with a Lumix ZR1. It does all I need and the IA setting has been faultless at picking needed parameters.
If you can call it a fault, the camera is so compact my huge hands have trouble not accidentally pushing buttons.
Liked it so much I bought another for my daughter.
