I bought the SD980 as a compliment to my 40D for those times when a full size camera just isn't practical.
I like the touch screen feature but find that I tend to use the conventional controls just as much. The delete photo touch screen feature is the one exception. I find the touch screen, delete photo method much easier, although it doesn't always work the first time. I find that when I use this method it doesn't always recognize that I dragged down and then to the left to delete a picture. It just scrolls to the next picture as if I had just pulled my finger to the left only. I still can't get the camera to scroll through the pictures buy just tilting the camera. These features are nice but hardly necessary.
The camera takes very sharp pictures in daylight, however it struggles a bit in darker settings. As long as you don't expect details as sharp as a DSLR camera you will be happy. I used to own the SD750 and this camera takes much better pictures.

This is used as a family snapshot camera. I bought it to replace a 1 year old SD880 IS that was damaged and couldn't be repaired. My first impressions are that I don't like the ergonomics of this camera as well as the 880. If you have large hands, find something else for a camera. It's a bear to turn on and off and the other control functions are tricky too unless you have fingernails and are fairly dexterous.
The touch screen controls are a little iffy too. My wife can make it work most of the time but I struggle. It seems to be a great quality camera, but not handy for everyone.

QUality of pictures is very good, the speed of the camera in between shots is very slow though. This is a big deal for me. I will keep the camera though as I will learn to be more patient in between shots. The touch interface is also a nice addition, you still have the option to use the manual buttons as well.

Great shots - awesome videos - EASY to use. Zoom is quick and clear. Touch screen makes it easy to review both pictures and video. Cable from camera to USB is a much simpler method to download photos to PC - should never have to remove memory card if you don't want to.

I reviewed the instructions for about an hour. After the battery was charged I installed the battery and memory card. Another 15 minutes applying the settings and I was ready to take pictures. The very first pictures I took were clear using the auto settings.
The camera will be used in a test labratory to take pictures to include in test reports. Many of the photos will be close up shots to highlight surface details of test samples and docoment test results. I haven't tried all the modes yet but it already appears to be a great advance over the 5-year old Nikon it replaced.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD980 IS Digital Camera (Silver):
I bought this camera for my wife on Christmas to replace a 4 year old HP camera. She is an active photographer and loves to snap a lot of pictures of family, friends, animals and the outdoors. We both love the wide angle shots this camera takes vs. our previous cameras.. and the start up time for this camera is super quick. The only things we do not like about the camera after about a month of use is... well its still a point and shoot and it takes its time between shots and you need to be very steady to get crisp shots (which we are all aware of with point and shoots, so we're not overly concerned about these issues). Also, it often seems like the flash is almost too bright, washing out pictures when you are positioned too close to the object or person. After plenty of use, you figure out where you need to be for certain shots, but it still catches you off guard from time to time. Other than these minor objections, the SD980 takes rather nice shots and crisp video if your patient and steady. 4 Stars for another solid product from Canon.

I wanted a camera that would take decent pictures at my daughters various school functions. Pictures are clear and crisp. Doesn't take great shots in low light and the touch screen takes a little getting used to.

I got this for my daughter for Christmas. She has had two other cameras in the past. I wanted one that was of good quality and would last. We have purchased Canon products in the past and have been very happy. Now we will buy no other brand. We love the touch screen. Very easy to navigate the different screens. We are photochallenged. You can touch the menu screen and camera will take a picture based on the screen setting you input. No more guessing what the icons mean. I want one for myself!! I can't wait to take beach and fireworks pictures. The size of the camera is also a good fit.

bought this camera as a backup. I am very disappionted with its performance. picture quality is poor. autofocus is not accurate although it beeps as if the picture is in focus.
macro capabilities are poor. it's acctually a downgrade from my previous sd 890. I have to give up the wide 24 MM and order the sd 970 instead.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD980 IS Digital Camera (Silver):
This camera replaced my broken SD750 which I loved as well. I searched high and low for another Canon point-and-shoot that was comparable to the SD750 and finally found it with the 980. The touch screen features may not be for everyone, but I personally like them. The camera takes great photos and I especially love the ISO3200 setting, as I take a lot of photos at concerts. Granted these are just shows at local venues so I can get closer to the stage as opposed to a large arena concert. I did test out the range of this setting at a concert and took photos from the back of the room (very large room). They were better than I expected, but of course had some increased noise. I like being able to turn the flash off at shows. I hate using flash on any pictures! I also own a Rebel XS, and this little camera is nice for the occasions that I don't feel like carrying the larger SLR. I highly recommend this product!!
