The Digital Foci Picture Porter 35 Portable Digital Photo Manager is a portable battery powered hard drive unit that allows users to transfer data off of most popular memory card types. This will free up memory card space so you can keep shooting, and provides a safe place to save your precious photos. Just insert the digital camera memory card into Picture Porter 35, your photos are quickly transferred to the device. With its large 3.5" LCD display, you can clearly inspect the photos before deciding which are keepers and which to need to be re-shot.
Picture Porter 35 gives photographers file management features that eliminate the need altogether for a PC while on the road. Users now have the ability to make selections, copy, rename, delete files, sort files by name or date, and create new folders. The PhotoMemo feature lets you record specific notes or comments with your photos, and you can play the comments with each photo during playback.
For personal and business use, the new Playlist feature lets users create unique photo slideshows that can be viewed on Picture Porter 35 or transferred to Digital Foci's Image Moments digital photo frame for playback. Other features include audio and video playback, a built-in speaker, audio recorder with built-in mic, and audio and video output.
With its high-capacity hard drive, you can now carry your collection of digital photos and video with you and view them anywhere. While viewing photos on Picture Porter 35's large 3.5" LCD screen, you can rotate, zoom, pan, view EXIF information and histogram, and play picture slideshows of your images (including RAW images).
You can also connect Picture Porter 35 to a TV and share your photos and music with family and friends on a big screen in the comfort of your living room. Picture Porter 35 also supports various music and video formats so you can keep your collection of media content in one place for easy access.

I've recently purchased the 500GB Picture Porter 35 to backup my CF Cards on photo shoots when I don't want to carry along my laptop, but do want to create a backup for all of my shots. And I want to see my RAW file shots without having to also capture a .jpg, which uses up CF cards faster and gives only a "general, pre-baked" version of the shot. The Picture Porter does this flawlessly, providing a large and bright viewing screen. In addition, I can choose to see detailed EXIF and IPTC metadata for my shots as well as a histogram, which is the icing on the cake! I never feel that my images are safe, unless I have multiple copies of them on different devices kept in separate locations. I accomplish this on the road with the PPR-35, which allows you to transfer files between itself and USB storage devices as well as from one external USB storage device to another! The PPR-35 comes with an On-The-Go USB adapter cable to let you use USB thumb drives or external USB hard drives. I use the OTG feature to connect a Buffalo USB 500GB Ministation external hard drive to the Picture Porter, giving me a total of 1.0 Terabyte of storage that takes up less than 4" x 5.5" x 2.5" of space! Their customer support is excellent. When I had a question before a shoot that I needed a quick answer for, their support department called me back on a Saturday, a non-scheduled workday for them! Kudos to Digital Foci and the PPR-35.

I will try the firmware update but so far I'm not happy with this product. I keep trying to transfer all of the files from a 16GB CF card, and it shuts down before it's through. It is fully charged and happens even when it is connected to power. I turned off the auto-shutoff function. I have transferred the files from about 8 cards but so far it has shut down almost every transfer. This may need a warranty exchange. Other notes: I thought it would be smaller/lighter, it's a bit clunky. Also my intention was to load the cards while shooting, but it seems a bit fragile for that, especially the way the card sticks out and also there are functions for formatting the card on the main menu and no "lock keys" type of button. Not sure I want to risk accidentally erasing my card!!! Not what I expected, wish I could choose another brand. Feels cheap in your hand, the controls feel cheap, the menus are a bit strange, the dial button is a bit strange. It also doesn't detect files you've already transferred.

Comments about Digital Foci Picture Porter 35 500GB Internal Hard Drive Portable Digital Photo Manager:
Just bought and tested out this drive.I used it while travelling to down load cards w/o lugging a laptop in the field. It took a while to understand the controls but you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure them out. Instructions are clear and the two times I had to call for support they were quick, pleasant & knowlegeable.I was able to transfer photos to an external HD 1.5T but you must keep the Foci pluged in to a/c or it will not be able to power the HD and operate the transfer. Be wary of the leather case that it comes in. It can block the full insertion of the power cord when you recharge. It does not fit in a shirt pocket but it works smoothly and rather fast.Big storage. Go for it!

I bought this product to save my images from my flash cards and not have to carry a laptop with me on trips. This unit does an excellent job with this requirement. Since I don't use it for anything else I can't comment on it's other uses.

After I returned my defective unit to Digital FOCI, I received a new unit and an advisory that there was an outstanding problem when loading large number of photos from a high speed CF card. I encountered both that problem and an additional problem charging the battery for this 2nd unit from the 110 volt 60 Hz wall socket. After several phone conversations with patient, articulate personnel at Digital FOCI, they sent me a third Picture Porter Unit and an auxiliary CF card reader. With this kluge I am capable of uploading over a thousand photos from my high speed 16GB CF cards. I am also capable of downloading them to a 16 GB thumb drive. It has been an experience beta testing Digital FOCI's Picture Porter 35.

Just picked this little gem up for a 3 week trip to Europe. Plan to use it along with 2 backup drives and leave the laptop behind. [...] Very compact, long battery life, accepts all cards and formats. Not the image presentation of the Epson, but half the price if all you need is secure backup.

Comments about Digital Foci Picture Porter 35 500GB Internal Hard Drive Portable Digital Photo Manager:
Life as a photographer in the field has changed for me. Previously, I would take along my 64GB iPad 3G and a Digital Foci Photo Safe II on a photo shoot. The Photo Safe II would provide image backup and in studio input support for my photos. The iPad would be used with the Camera Connection Kit to view my CF cards images while in the field.
Sadly, that is no longer possible. Without warning, Apple has downgraded the iPad in IOS 4.2.1 so that many CF card readers no longer are recognized by the iPad. This is a result of the iPad's power limitation having been drastically curtailed.
With an upcoming photo shoot scheduled for early next week, I was in a fix. I sat here this morning trying to find a way around this nasty iPad limitation. Every CF reader that I used issued the same complaint from the iPad--too much power required for the device. So my collection of CF card readers proves rather useless.
I happen to own a brand new Picture Porter 35. I absolutely love the device, but in all candor, the LCD image quality, while useful, isn't quite good enough for client viewing in the field. So that option didn't seem to be feasible.
Just when I thought that all must be lost, on a lark, I took a CF card and used the Digital Foci Picture Porter 35 to copy the entire CF card's images to a formatted SDHC card. I then placed the SDHC card in the iPad's Camera Connection kit. The iPad immediately recognized the SDHC card and began importing the images.
This product is an absolute life saver. Now if I could only find a way to connect the Picture Porter 35 to my iPad...

Comments about Digital Foci Picture Porter 35 500GB Internal Hard Drive Portable Digital Photo Manager:
Photography is just a hobby, however when I take photos I take a lot of photos. I have a Canon D7 and the file sizes are substantial, particularly when taking movies. I was looking for an external drive that didn't depend on being connected to a PC and therefore backup my photos on the move. The Picture Porter 35 500gig fits the bill. When I come back to my temporary accommodation, I use the laptop to then backup my work from the Picture Porter 35 to an archiving DVD, allowing me to now free up space on my CF card.
The Picture Porter 35 allows you to view your shots on a larger screen than what's on the camera. However I find the quality of the LCD screen no match to that on my camera. Having said that, it is primarily an external hard drive after all. It's also very versatile in how you want to file you shots. Whether you like to file using date file names or maybe location file names is up to you. You can also do incremental backups on the run.
In conclusion I really like my Picture Porter 35, it does much more than a normal external drive which is great for photographers as you can down load, view pictures even on a TV and arrange files all without a PC.
Down side, LCD quality and the fact you can't view HD video, although it will save HD Video files.

Used on vacation to backup camera cards -- worked great! Had a little problem when it came, as the firmware was corrupt. Called company in CA, they next day aired a new unit (wow)!. A little bit of a learning curve, but not bad. A nice device.

Comments about Digital Foci Picture Porter 35 500GB Internal Hard Drive Portable Digital Photo Manager:
Not so great: The product is not very intuitive and takes much more time to master than it should . . .in that sense it is a throwback to MS-DOS era of computers. Once I stumbled through the instructions (multiple times) and contacted tech support (several times) it worked as advertised.
Good News: I had an early version, 120GB, and it too was clumsy from a software and user-friendly standpoint, but held up well. I used it on multiple trips to Asia and the Middle East as my primary backup system and it never failed me. Hopefully the newer, larger version will do so also.
Very Good News: The tech support is as good as it gets. They respond within 12 hours and have been very clear, concise and extremely helpful. That is the real saving grace of the device, along with its reliability and performance.
--Once you work through the process and understand how it works, it is a great little device and worth the effort.
