I switched to the G-Drive from a popular inexpensive external hard drive that did not work well--my IMac did not "see" the drive and it made whirring and almost grinding sounds. I switched to the G-Drive based on reviews at B&H Photo, and it is working as it should. I find the on-off switch very convenient, since I don't always need it on after backing up my photos. Nonetheless, if I need it back on, I turn it on, and it is always immediately "seen" by my computer.
I use it to back up my photos as I import them using Lightroom, and it works flawlessly.
Set up was as easy as it gets: Followed the instructions, plug it in, and it works automatically with my IMac.

I have to agree with the other reviews that this drive is loud. For being a fan-less design, it's rather shocking. Because of how loud it is I've knocked it down a couple of stars. Anyone wanting to use this as part of a media server solution will be greatly disappointed in this product.
The wall-wart is smaller than the past models, but could consume multiple spots on a power strip.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
When I was looking for expanded storage, I took the advice of my photographer friend who only uses gdrives, and swears by them. Although its a bit early to comment on its long term durability and reliability, I have had no problems as of yet. I wish it came with a shorter FW800 cable, though. My only other comment is that the logo on the front of the drive is slightly askew, and the light is very bright and dominant. Minor details for me, I have it in a media center behind closed doors, but something someone else might care about having on their desk.

I'm using the drive as a scratch disc for FCP X. It mounted right out of the box. It can take some time to remount if you unplug it, but that's not a big issue. It's about as loud as the 1 Tb Lacie I already owned.

I've worked with just about every type of hard drive for video/photo work and the G Drive is by far my top choice.
It's Rugged, totally transportable, never over heats or malfunctions, is eSATA capable, and the price is fair.

Am using this HDD as a back up storage Drive! For all my video productions & having both mac & Pc stations. This is the best thing I have acquired this year. The multiple connective - FW/USB/SATA makes it even more user friendly!!!!
The design, shape & weight a further +, making work with safe with no chance of it flipping over accidentally!!!! Your data is safe with the G DRIVE!!!
2 thumbs up!!!!!

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
To all of you shopping for an external hard drive, look no further. Let me do your leg work for you. I've just read between 200-300 reviews, studied benchmark tests, and spent way too much time researching what should've been available to me through one good review and I'd like to do that for you now.
Bottomline up front, the G-drive is worth the money but like anything else comes with its own issues.
First of all, ALL HDDs fail. It's just a fact we have to face until we all have SSDs in our workspaces. It's only a matter of time and volume of use before one fails, doesn't wake up, or starts making clunking noises. Period. No arguments accepted.
So let's get on to more important questions such as how long is it going to last? What is the performance like compared to similar models? What is the audible influence on the workspace? These are realistic questions we need to be asking ourselves.
Longevity: The Hitachi brand has earned a solid name for itself (relatively speaking) over the last several years. According to IT pros, several years ago they weren't doing so well. But this isn't the case today and simply judging by the lower number of negative reviews of G-Tech is atleast a little demostration of this allegation. Go to audio/video sites, they recommend Hitachi. Ask B&H reps, they recommend G-Tech/Hitachi. I could go on.
Performace: Being a 7200RPM drive clues us in on the immediate perfomance gain over most other (slower) drives on the market. But, if you need results of comparisons conducted on similar speed models you'll find benchmark tests indicating the G-Drive to be at or near the front of the pack in most tests available online. Of course, these differences are minute and most of us probably won't notice the difference between any 7200 RPM quality hard drive running eSATA or FW800.
Noise: As many of you may have heard, there is a pronounced noise disadvantage with this hard drive. It's not that it's a freight train by any means, but there is a slight high-pitched whine that comes out of this thing which can be heard up to about 4 feet away. I've remedied this by placing the unit on the floor on top of some carpet facing away from me. If it's not painfully clear, I'm not a fan of noise near my workstation.
Altogether, the noise and related vibration isn't bad enough (for most of us) to settle for a lesser drive. If you can locate the drive away from the immediate desk area or work space, it should be quiet enough to be used in any capacity. Some folks may not even notice the noise. I recommend the drive if you are looking for a longer lasting, higher-than-average performing drive at somewhat of a price premium. I really hope this helps. This info cost me about 40 hours worth of research!

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
A key factor for me was a drive that was relatively compact, fast, and quiet. While the 2TB G-Drive has been quieter than some drives I've used, it's far from the quietest, and that's a bit disappointing, as I'd intended to use it as a media drive.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
The G-Drive does it's job, but it's not necessarily the best bang for you buck. The hard drive comes packaged nicely - you don't need to worry about it getting damaged during shipment. Also, the G-Drive looks nice and has that Mac Pro look.
But, the hard drive is a bit noisy. Almost too noisy to edit my videos. It's hard, especially when you're working on fixing audio issues.
Overall I'd say this is a great drive, but a little distracting when it comes to noise.

I have worked as an editor in many television and documentary productions that have used the drive each time and have never encountered any problems with one. Its solid build and durability make it a dependable drive if you need to travel with it or ship it to another location. The interior fan keeps it at a cool temperature even when working for days straight.

Will use it with my new Mac laptop. My wife gave the hard drive to me for Christmas. i've been busy in other areas and haven't been able to set it up as of this time.
Two of my sons have five of your drives and recommended this one to my wife for me. They use them in their business and are well pleased with them.
I have looked at the materials for setting it up and I'm concerned about the process of recovering needed data. For me being somewhat limited in computer skills the process isn't very clear and I'm having difficulty with understanding the process.

I purchased this as a temporary backup drive, which will later be used as a working edit-ready drive to store FCP content and project files. Generally I have not had any problems with G-Drives in the past, they are for the most part very reliable. I've only been using this drive a few days but so far so good.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
I purchased this drive to use in my video operation and it is exceeding expectations. It is fast, quiet, and hopefully reliable (to date it is). I am using the eSATA interface and it is substantially faster than the WD drive (also eSATA) that it replaced. I am using this on a Vista computer. For those who are planning on using it on a Windows computer and are not familiar with the setting up a drive formatted for a Mac, G-Technology has very good instructions on their Web site.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
As a professional photographer I need lots of storage and little anxiety. After having had 2 external hard drives go irretrievably bad (one a WD and one a LaCie) I did a lot of asking around, always hearing good things about Hitachi and their G-Drive. I've only had it a couple of weeks but I can say it's a good-looking design, it's the right size and capacity for my needs and it was very easy to set up. My one misgiving is that it's a little noisier than I expected. It is not whisper-quiet, however, after about 4 minutes of dormancy it goes into a totally silent sleep mode. I plan to get another one for even more peace of mind.

Comments about G-Technology 2TB G-Drive External Hard Drive:
As a professional video editor I have used a lot of different types of drives. G-Technology has created the most stable, affordable drive solution I have found. I love the compact brushed metal exterior and it's quiet speed. Working in HD, you have to have a 7200 rpm drive and varied interface...this drive has both and is reliable and stable. Like all external drives, the 'sleep' function followed by the spin up drives me crazy, but they all have that issue.
I have bought at least 4 G-tech drives from B& H and have been thrilled with every one!
