Designed for pros and semi-pros alike, the Canon EOS 7D is a high-performance digital SLR, that features the resolving power of an 18-megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 4 image processors that enable 8 frames-per-second capture of high-definition, low-noise imaging at sensitivity levels up to ISO 12800.
In addition to high-definition still images the Canon EOS 7D can also capture true HD 1080p video at 30 frames per second. Video clips can be up to 12 minutes in length or 4GB in size, and you can make full use of all Canon EF and EF-S-mount lenses, which enables an exceptional range of creative visual possibilities. And to ensure clean, blemish-free image files, the 7D employs a dual dust-reduction system.
The EOS 7D's Intelligent Viewfinder enables 100% viewing of the total image area, and features a transparent LCD overlay option that enables advanced data display within the optical viewfinder including user-selected AF modes, a spot metering circle, and on-demand grid lines. In addition to the 7D's optical viewfinder a Live View mode enables you to compose, review, and edit images using the camera's 3", 920,000-dot TFT LCD. The 7D also features a Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that enables you to adjust the roll and pitch of the camera in 1° increments, using the viewfinder or LCD.
For continuous shooting sequences, the 7D can capture bursts of up to 126 JPEGs (large) when using UDMA CF memory cards, or 15 when shooting RAW files. An enhanced all cross-type 19-point autofocus system enables extremely accurate AI Servo AF subject tracking and user-selectable AF modes for precise focusing. For metering stills and video, the 7D features a new 63-zone iFCL metering system that takes focus and color data into consideration when establishing exposure times.
The Canon EOS 7D is constructed out of rugged magnesium-alloy and is sealed against dust and weather. The 7D's shutter is equally rugged and tested for up to 150,000 exposure cycles. Images can be recorded to Type I and II, UDMA-compliant CompactFlash cards in either sRGB or Adobe RGB, and you can expect up to 800 exposures per charge using the camera's rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
In addition to a number of different recording size and frame rate modes, the EOS 7D enables easy manual control of exposure, focus and Live View features and even allows for in-camera editing. The large CMOS sensor and compatibility with over 60 lenses provide a wealth of depth-of-field options. And it's all as easy as the press of a button - the EOS 7D has a dedicated Live View/Movie Recording lever with a start/stop button that gets the shooting started fast.
Full HD Video is captured at 1920 x 1080 resolution at 30p (29.97), 24p (23.976) or 25p frames per second, for up to 4GB per clip. Movies are saved as .MOV files and can be viewed in Full HD with HDMI output. Other recording sizes include HD at 1280 x 720 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps) or SD/VGA at 640 x 480 (50p / 60p (59.94) fps).
Display options include: grid, spot metering, AF points display, hide all, zone AF, spot (single-point) AF, AF point expansion and Dual Axis Electronic Level display. The EOS 7D also features a brilliant new Dual Axis Electronic Level and tilt display that aids in achieving perfectly level shots, displaying both roll and pitch in 1° increments, either in the viewfinder or on the LCD.
In addition, Canon's Light Source detection AF automatically compensates the focus by taking into account artificial lighting sources and making appropriate adjustments and the EOS 7D's new Intelligent Macro focusing tracks the object or the cameras movement when shooting close-up, to ensure focus is never lost. AF modes can be customized to suit the situation, ensuring reliable focus, every time.
Since the metering sensor has a color measurement function, exposure errors and focus errors caused by different light sources are minimized; the EOS 7D gives stable exposure from shot to shot in situations where light changes, such as in a theater or concert hall. This makes the EOS 7D ideal for scenes with extreme difference in brightness such as brightly lit scenes or backlit scenes; the camera balances exposure of the main subject at the background, and exposures are not overly influenced by bright areas in the shot.

I've upgraded to the 7D from Canons older, smaller model, the Canon XTi/400D. My other two considerations were the 5D mark II and the 50D. Considering the price, I think the 7D is actually the sweet spot, the Best Buy amongst all of those... More-so, it has features even the current 1D series doesn't.
1. Compared with the XTi/400D
The 7D trumps the older, cheaper 400D in almost all aspects. The 400D was a great little camera to learn photography with, but I can honestly say I outgrew it and needed some extra features (which the 7D delivered, it would turn out), especially as soon as I sold my first photo. It's no surprise really since the 7D is 2 and a half generations younger and 2 classes higher than it. Faster auto-focus and burst rate, bigger viewfinder, more "cropability", better ergonomics, live view, battery life, higher ISO possibilities, better general image quality... need I go on?
2. 7D vs the 50D
When I got to a point where I really needed to upgrade (and before the 7D came out), due to the fact my XTi started falling apart, this was the first camera I ran to. I waited for a friend to buy it and when he let me play with it a bit, what I got were mixed feelings. I'm glad I went with the 7D instead because of the better auto-focus and better image quality. The difference at higher ISO is noticeable. Not dramatic, but it's there. The question really stands - do you need the extra options the 7D provides for the extra money which could go towards another lens. For instance, I don't really need the movie mode of the 7D, but if that is something that's important to you, then the 50D, obviously, isn't worth it. If you shoot at lower ISO's, if you're more of a general hobby shooter, not shooting that much sport or wildlife, the 50D is still an awesome camera and I'd recommend it.
3. 5D mark 2 vs 7D
Well...this is a hard one. The 5D2 is also a camera I -almost- bought. There are many fronts on which these two cameras battle, but the full frame sensor is a factor you can't put into numbers. The extra width, more logical lens collection combos, even bigger viewfinder... and a slower and less accurate autofocus, slower burst rate... The 5D2 would be an awesome camera to pair up with the 7D, since they're both intended for a different market, if they were only matched in price. For me, it's not worth the difference, even though I shoot a lot of landscapes and portraits.
In conclusion, I'm delighted with my purchase and you may consider it highly recommended - by me :)

Things that are great about it:a. Focus system of the camera is amazingb. Camera's ergonomics are greatc. Acceptable noise at high ISOd. Very good burst system, so fast.Things that are NOT great about it:a. Unfortunatly, seventeen days after I bought the camera, it stopped to work, displaying an error 20 on LCD of the camera. After that I can not use the camera anymore. When I claimed with Canon Support Department [...] for a replacement, they didn't agree with that and said it would only be possible to repair it. Only seventeen days using to have a camera repaired, I took about 150 shots.I was so disappointed with Canon [...] I really wouldn't like to have this NEW camera repaired, but it should be replaced, makes more sense in this case.

My 7D does much more that I anticipated in my casual, portrait, copy, HDR, landscape, some limited commercial photography. While I do very little video it is nice to have this plus capability. Learning controls a short process with this ergonomically designed camera.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
Canon cameras have been always high quality products and this one is an example. I had a Canon EOS Rebel I bought years ago, I probably abused it since I took so many pictures of everywhere we went. My kids were always my first target, I was proud of having such a nice machine, but the technology moves forward and was time to upgrade and i found the 7D,over Canon's website, I read all the specifications, compared with other ones less and more expensive so this one has what I need. I ordered it so it could arrive right on my birthday. I am happy with it and I plan to use it very often.

This is a upgrade from our, my wife and I, T2i.
I love the weight of the camera and the feel of it
in my hand. The buttons and menu items are well placed for quick manipulation. This camera should do most of what an aspiring amatuer photogrpher
would desire. Clean and crisp images with many
"many of the most needed and requested bells and whistles!"

Comments about Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
I have just used it for one shoot of the local indoors sports. The performance is very poor, especially about the AF. I took about 100 photos at ISO 1000, only about 15 are at focus. The extremely high noise level at ISO 1000 resulted very poor image quality. I took those as large RAW.In the same setting, my 50D performed much better.
Possible reasons: my 50D wears canon 70-200/IS f2.8; my 7d wears canon 24-70/L f2.8. Further, the very complicated AF modes (with unnecessary multiple focus points) and 7D's complicated menu systems ccould be the causes.
Bottom line, the 7D is well built. I will test it more after I read the menu.

After much looking, I decided the Canon 7D was a good fit for my needs. I wanted a versatile camera of excellent quality and the 7D should be great for this purpose. I considered other brands and also the 60D but felt the price difference was well worth the difference in features and performance.

I ordered this camera, after a lot of research, to replace an old Canon EOS Rebel XT. I wanted something that would accept the great non-standard lenses that I already owned. I also wanted to upgrade to a better camera body. We used this camera this week on a trip to Big Bend National Park with all 3 of the Canon 5 star lenses and I am loving the 7D so far. It has wonderful image quality, is pretty easy to use, and works beautifully with all of my current lenses. I am extremely happy with my choice so far.

Comments about Canon EOS 7D SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):
The camera feels solid. Controls are consistent with the 10x-60x cameras, with minor differences. The camera is quiet. I debated the 7D vs the 5D Mark II. The only advantage the 5D had was the larger sensor, hence better in low light conditions. Other than that, the 7D had more advanced features across the board, plus it works with ALL my lenses (not just the full frame lenses).

I waited for a long time to upgrade my camera and I'm glad I did. The Canon 7D is everything I hoped it would be and more. A great size as well as stunning results. Thanks B&H for making it so easy! BUY IT! You will be glad you did. I have not tried the video. Doubt I ever will. But it is one fine DSLR!

I bought the 7D as a 2nd camera for video shoots, with a 5D as the other camera. This way I get different focal lengths from the same lenses. The 7D is rugged, beautifully built camera. Everything feels solid. Camera produces exceptional images. The slow motion features works very nicely. Excellent!

In the past year, photography has become my main point of interest. I love nature/wildlife/landscape images. My Rebel XS was great to learn the ropes, but adding the 7D to my equipment list has increased my enthusiasm several fold. It's a bit more complex compared to my XS but very "user friendly". The image quality is superb and fits my hands like a glove. Very well built and weather resistant is a definite plus.

I was really debating between te 7D and the Nikon D7000. The deciding factors were the ergonomics and build quality. I'm very happy with all aspects of this camera. The canon 50mm f1.4 works great with the 7D.
