I think the best way to start this review is to say why I bought the camera. I was looking for something that was as close to a DSLR in IQ, controls, and features, but in a smaller and more travel friendly package. I wanted something I could toss into a jacket pocket or small backpack and not have to worry about weight, size or carrying a bunch of lenses.

I started off my search by looking at advanced point and shoots (e.g. G10, LX-4, S90, etc.) but the weak ISO performance and slow lenses forced me to drop them from my list. From there, the next step was to look at Micro Four Third (M4/3) and compact ASP-C setups. Along with the GF-1, I looked at the Olympus EP-1, EP-2, EPL-1 and the Sony NEX-3/5. I tested all of these and narrowed it down to the GF-1 for the following reasons:
• Controls: The GF-1 just felt like using my 5D. The dials, menus, and controls are very intuitive and the settings/functions you need to change frequently (ISO, metering mode, aperture, shutter, exposure comp., etc.) are just a button push or dial turn away. The Olympus required a little more digging and performance was a sluggish compared to the GF-1. The Sony wasn't as bad as people make it out to be, but it does get old shuffling through menus to change simple things like the ISO. Supposedly, Sony is going to release a firmware update to remedy this issue in the near future.
• Speed: The focus speed of the GF-1 with the 20mm vs. any of the Olympus models is noticeably faster. This makes a huge difference for street photography which is important to me. The NEX was just as fast (if not faster) but the GF-1 was fast AND accurate…the Sony missed it's mark quite a few times.
• Price: I've invested quite a bit of money into building a DSLR setup that works for me and to invest even more money into a camera that I will only really use when traveling was not an option. When I finally decided on getting a M4/3, the EPL-1 was the cheapest of the bunch and it looked like my only option at that time. I was going to settle for this as I had a limit that I didn't want to exceed. Luckily, two weeks before my trip, the price of the GF-1 with the 20mm lens dropped to a price where it made the GF-1 a no brainer.
• Lens Quality: The 20mm is a fantastic lens. Distortion is undetectable (with in camera correction) and color and contrast are excellent. Sharpness is also excellent between the f/2-f/6.3 range. Images produced wide open are still very good. Olympus has some good offerings at decent prices, but I think the 20mm is THE lens to have for M4/3 bodies. The Sony lenses just could not compare which is a real shame. I probably would have purchased the NEX if it had a prime lens in the 20mm area that could compare to the Panny's 20mm.
• Picture Quality: I thought my initial test images were good but after using this as my only camera for two weeks in Europe, I have to say that I am truly impressed with the GF-1. While I did miss my 5D, I never really felt like I was in a position where I was limited because I had the GF-1 instead of my 5D. Color reproduction and AWB accuracy is VERY good. I usually shoot RAW and I've only had to make minor adjustments which is always nice.
• Battery Life: I've been getting close to 400 shots on a full charge which seems pretty good to me. I've had point and shoots bodies in the past that have had awful battery life. There's nothing worse than having a nice small camera to put in your pocket but then you have to put two extra batteries in your other pocket. Defeats the purpose of the small camera.

I've also discovered a few cons with this camera. No deal breakers or anything significant enough to make me want to get rid of the GF-1…just a few gripes.
• Noise: Starting at about ISO 400, noise becomes visible. Sadly, ISO 800 is about the max I will use with this body. I have gone higher and had "OK" results, but the result is very grainy images. Luckily, Lightroom's noise reduction is very good.
• Size: Don't get me wrong, this is drastically smaller than my 5D with a 50mm but it's still not really a "pocketable" camera. I have some fall/winter jackets with larger pockets that may be able to hold the GF-1, but that's about it. It does however fit into my wife's purse quite nicely :-)

Overall, I'm very pleased with this camera. It's by no means the holy grail of cameras but it is a very capable setup that is compact and fun to use. The GF-1 will definitely be coming on more day trips and vacations where the 5D would be too much camera.

Side note - I also ended up buying the EVF which has come in handy when working in bright sunlight as the back LCD gets washed out quite easily. It's a little pricey and small, but I think it's worth the $.

Being a current FX nikon shooter i bought the gf1 for a walkaround light camera. for still shots this camera is superb producing excellent quality shots.

for moving targets though it is very disappointing and i dont recommend it with the 20mm lens which will not support AF-C mode. to support af-c mode you need a different lens which of course makes the camera bigger and therefore losing all of its compact appeal.

The 4/3 sensor with this 20 1.7 is a match made in heaven! Great image quality, low light ability. Somewhat responsive shutter, flexible control of functions. Its designed for people who knows how to handle a dslr so beginners may not get all the benefits.

I'm a professional who was looking for something that could at least have some quality with a big sensor that could have some selective focus look. This is it. Small enough for a jacket pocket. Fast 1.7 lens, 720 HD video. It has everything that I was looking for that is responsive enough for me. Did extensive research. This is the best. I cannot not say enough good things about this camera.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 Digital Camera with 20mm f/1.7 Lens:

Already own a Lumix LX3, this is a nice upgrade and complement. While the first has an exceptionally bright and wide angle lens, the GF1 takes amazing pictures with nice bokeh and sharpness with an adequate all-purpose 40mm (in 35mm equivalent) lens. Certainly a different camera, must think carefully about framing and focus and exposure, but it can deliver SLR-like quality. Already thinking about new lenses, but certainly recommended as is, even over the upcoming GF2 which is slightly smaller but more comsumer-oriented. I only miss IBIS with the pancake lens and low-light perforemance is still I must say better with my LX3, too bad.

After reviewing, reading about, and thinking through this camera for a whole year, finally went ahead and bought one. That was the best camera decision I've made! What a wonderful camera - it's low light (indoor) capability together with great dynamic range of its wide aperture 20mm lens make it a stunning thing in the hands of someone who can compose well, but is not keen on carting the bulk of a DSLR. I've taken about 600 shots in three shooting days, and am delighted by its performance. [...]

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 Digital Camera with 20mm f/1.7 Lens:

I got the GF1 because I was looking for something more serious than my Canon G9, but not as bulky as a true SLR. The picture quality is excellent; indoors without flash, indoors with flash and outdoors. The shutter is fast (and sounds sturdy and mechanical), and the continuous shooting mode works great. The camera auto-detects when you are trying to focus on a nearby object and switches to macro mode. In full-auto mode, it detects faces reliably, and the auto-focus always seems to switch to the right object.

The f1.7 lens is just awesome; that's the main reason I got this particular camera. You can get really short depth-of-field shots.

The auto-focus is extremely fast, even indoors. It has a nice mode where it focuses in real time (rather than only when you half-depress the shutter).

I do have a few minor gripes: The camera does not auto-rotate photos based on the camera position when the shot was taken. This is a feature most cheap cameras have, so I miss it. It means after you download your photos you have to manually rotate each one. This isn't a big deal; I use iPhoto and it's just one button click. Also, when you set the camera to RAW mode, it will shoot RAW in *every* mode. My Canon had a separate mode for this, and I kind of preferred that. It meant I could stick to JPEG for automatic shots, but RAW for the other modes. Also, I couldn't figure out how to set the shutter speed in manual mode. I know I can look it up in the manual. It just seemed like such a fundamental feature should be obvious without needing to look at the instructions.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 Digital Camera with 20mm f/1.7 Lens:

After considerable research two cameras were left in the running. One was the Olympus E-P2 Pen with 17mm f/2.8 lens. The other the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1. The Olympus had the retro look, which almost pulled me in. However, the slow auto-focus was a concern for me, and I also read where a lot of Olympus owners were buying the Panasonic 20 f/1.7 lens, which is considerably faster than the Olympus 17mm f/2.8. So, I figured it just made more sense to go ahead and get the Panasonic. I am so glad that I did! The faster auto-focus has proven to be super helpful in capturing great shots of my 11 week old son! He wiggles around a lot, and I am still able to get razor sharp images with the GF1. I shoot 99.9% of my shots at f/1.7.

Having video capabilities on my still camera is something new to me, but I'm finding that I like what the GF1 offers in this area as well. I spoke with a friend who has the Olympus E-P1, and he said that capturing video on it is hard because the camera always loses focus of the object. I haven't used the video feature extensively on the GF1, but have found that it does a reasonable job at keeping subjects in focus.

Steve Huff has some excellent reviews of both cameras on his site that are worth checking out.

I purchased the GF1 to use for travel and street photography, so far it has lived up to all of my expectations.

I can carry the GF1 with 4 lenses and various accessories in a bag that weighs about 1/10th of my Canon DSLR setup (with comparable lenses and accessories). This makes a huge difference when you are hiking or trying to be inconspicuous on the street.

In my opinion the only thing that would make this camera perfect would be a built in viewfinder (similar to a rangefinder).

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 Digital Camera with 20mm f/1.7 Lens:

I could call this my Second ILC (intecrhcangeable lens) camera but since i bought two cameras, the G2 as well as this, it is hard to know which came first.

This camera does almost everything I need it to in order to replace my Canon S90 or my Nikon D90, well almost everything. And it has some nice features that beat both by a mile. Let's look at the cons first:
1)not equal to the D90 at ISO 1600, but close. As good as the S90.
2)grabbing focus is not as fast at my Nikon D90, faster than the S90 but very acceptable performance
              3) shot to shot time is not equal to the D90 but better than the Canon S90.

              The PRO features
              1) a good pound lighter with a long zoom equivalent to the D90, not all that much heavier with an equivalent zoom than the S90. But it is bigger than the S90 or the Panasonic LX5.
              2) Lacks the fully articulating LCD of the G2 (the GF2 does have this) but the LCD is very high quality. Does accept an EVF plug in which the Canon S90 cannot.
3)image quality very good, hard to tell apart from either the D90 or S90. Actually, a smidge better than the S90.
4)Camera, charger, lens, etc take far less than half the room of my D90 and is pounds lighter. Is heavier than the S90 and does take more room.
              5) ease of use is far better than my D90 and about the same as the S90 except for more features on the GF1.
6)equals or is better in every shooting case except for active sports.
7)Electronic view finder plug in is not up to the clarity of the G2 nor as good as an optical viewfinder. The EVF provides far more info in the finder or the LCD than either the D90 or S90.

If I sound pleased, I am. This would be the perfect camera for me except for less than stellar high ISO performance and not fitting into a shirt pocket.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 Digital Camera with 20mm f/1.7 Lens:

Bought to serve as a walkabout/casual camera, but it's going to be more of a constant companion.
The lens is tack sharp, AF is smooth and quick, the camera is quiet and responsive. There's some grain at 400 and up, but not enough to be truly disturbing - the images are crisp and clean otherwise. The menus are still a bit unfamiliar but that, too, will pass.

The camera is actually a bit smaller than I expected it to be; I was thinking Leica M size, but it's an inch or so smaller.

I don't know yet about the battery life, but I'll be finding that out within the next couple of days, I suspect.

                So far I'm highly pleased.

Great feature set and user friendly interface. I particularly like the auto bracketing function of +-2EV. BTW the new GF2 is only +-4/3EV. To my eye with the superior 20mm F1.7 lens, this is the better camera unless you're looking for HDV. Although I understand that there is a hack for that anyway. Could have used some glare coating on the LCD which is easily washed out in bright light conditions.

Excellent picture quality, simple, small, and light enough for everyday shooting and video for casual use. Got interested queries from pros looking for lighter SLR alternative. Pancake lens is fast enough for my kids who won't sit still, but do recommend getting a zoom for those times you can't get close enough. IMO, LCD screen wasn't that bad in bright daylight.
