I use this to edit HD video, both 1080:60i HDV and large ProRes files over FW800 into FCP. No problems or stutter at all, though I've only been working 2 streams or less. Before I bought this I was considering the WD MyStudio drives... the main complaint on those is that they go to sleep often and/or dismount. This drive has never dismounted, though it does go to sleep after a few minutes of non-use. It gets back up to speed pretty quickly though -- probably 15 seconds or so... in any case not long enough for me to be bothered enough to time it. I have 2 minor complaints: 1) the power button is not responsive and requires you to hold it down. I suppose this guards against accidental switch-offs, but I greatly prefer the simple click-switch of my older G-drive where there was no question about on/off. With this one you have to look at the light and wait to make sure it is powered down. Dumb. Which brings me to 2) The light is super bright and blinks frantically when in use. Unless you put it under the table this will constantly invade your peripheral vision -- but then if you do put it under the table the vagueness of the power switch becomes even more annoying. Minor things to exchange for a solid drive, but also silly things given the investment in design/packaging. Why put so much effort into making it match the finish of my Mac? Just give me a switch that does what it's supposed to.

I'm a serious amateur photog, and i have a degree in computer science, so i'm pretty careful about how i treat my machines. used this device for storage, and then to transfer a large pool of files from an overloaded computer to a new one. but in mid-transfer, after removing the files from the overloaded one (an error, i admit), the g-raid simply wouldn't power up. i tried changing various connectors and so forth. when i emailed customer support, they told me it was probably a "bad controller". they sounded like it happened all the time. they promised to try to find any data on the drive -- i had quite a bit of important data on it. i shipped my drive to them, paying a substantial amount for insurance, for the privilege. when they got it, it took them a while to respond, and finally they told me that they couldn't find any of the data. they then shipped me a refurbished drive as a replacement, and asked me if i wanted the old drives returned, which i did. I then sent the old drives out to an independent company, which was immediately able to find every file on the drive, right down to the root directory. From this i conclude that Graid tech support didn't seriously try to find the data. they couldn't be bothered, even though it was their failed controller that caused the problem. i tried to talk to them about covering my cost for the data recovery, and they wouldn't return my calls and emails (except for one attempt, late at night, which when i returned THAT call, wasn't ever returned again). this was a very frustrating experience, and i wouldn't buy another product from these guys.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
I bought this Hard Drive because I needed a faster storage unit for video editing. I've been using compact drives for over a year to edit photos and video and it is just TOO SLOW. This RAID made a huge difference not only in upload speed so my programs run smoother, but also in reliability.
It is very quiet and designed well. It comes with all the cables you need.
I would say the only downside to this hard drive is the size and weight. It is of course an older model, but it's even twice the size of my external hard drives bought 3-4 years ago. I wish it didn't take so much desk space. And for the price, I wish it had more memory storage than 1TB.

I use this drive as backup for editing. My main editing source is a 4 TB OWC Mercury Elite. The G Raids are clone of my main drive, so if it fails, I can always go to my G Raids and edit from there without having to waste any time while I troubleshoot or repair my main drive.

This is really one of the only choices in brand if you're looking for something for pro video editing...Its quality is on par with the Apple products that it emulates. Everything has been fine so far with this particular drive...speed is great. Cant wait to use it more.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
I am a professional video editor and was in the market for a reliable fast drive. In the past I used standard 7200 rpm drives thinking they were fine for my needs - and they seemed to work fine, but then I tried the G-Raid. I immediately noticed a big leap in speed - in everything from render times to no more drop frames during playback. I feel the G-Raid gave a big performance boost to my editing workflow. It is a bit more expensive than other standard drives, but it's worth it. I now use the G-Raid as my main media drive - and use the less expensive drives to do simple data back up, and that seems to suit my needs fine. I highly recommend this drive unit for any serious video or audio professional who is in need of a fast reliable external drive.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
This is the third G-Raid external hard drive I have purchased. Nothing happened to the old ones, just needed more storage space. Use them for digital images in photography and video. Have tried other brands over the years and had them die on me. The design of this product allows them to be stacked on top of each other without damage or overheating. Needed a dedicated 1TB hard drive for a project, otherwise would recommend the 2TB for $50 more.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
I did not give this product 5 stars b/c that would mean it is perfect. Overall this is a very fast, easy to use storage device that allowed me to back up my entire photo library and OS within a couple of hours.
The fan on the back does make some minor noise, but it really is not distracting, especially if you are listening to music in the background.
Used the device primarily for photos/video storage and backup.

This is the second G-Raid I've owned. So far so good. They just work. If they continue to they will keep their 5 star rating. If they fail they get no stars.

I had a smaller G drive before, and upgraded to the 1TB simply for more space. I'm a film student and I work with large HD files and constant transferring of files and I feel safe that this drive will not crash on me like previous ones I've had. Excellent product. What a drive should be.

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
We've used hard drives from every manufacturer to edit and archive video and electronic media. The G-Raid drives are by far the best off-the-shelf solution. Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital, Iomega... they simply are not robust in their designs. Sure, I've had one G-Raid unit fail over the years but everything was backed up as it should be. Never rely solely on one drive - period!

Comments about G-Technology 1TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array:
I had the 320-gig version of this for 4 years before it suddenly stopped working. Got this one and it is much quieter! So much so that I thought it wasn't working! Another difference is that the fan in the new one is thermal and only turns on if it gets too warm. Not sure I like that... I mean... what's the big deal of having it on all the time. With less heat it should last longer, right? That's my only complaint so far. Set up was a breeze and away I went, downloading video.
