The Pentax K-x Digital SLR incorporates advanced DSLR features - including Live View and HD 720p video - in a very capable entry-level camera for those looking to step beyond the limitations of point-and-shoot digicams. Bundled with a Pentax 18-55mm zoom lens (a 27 to 82.5mm zoom on a conventional 35mm camera), the compact Pentax K-x makes the transition to a 'serious' camera system with interchangeable lenses easy and painless.
The Pentax K-x contains a 12.4-megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor that incorporates a sensor-shift Shake Reduction System that allows you to hand-hold the camera at shutter speeds up to 4-stops slower than normal under low-light situations and still maintain image sharpness. Aside from the K-x's bright optical finder, you can also compose images in Live View mode using the camera's 2.7" LCD.
Despite the K-x's entry-level price point, still images can be captured at a fast 4.7 frames-per-second at shutter speeds up to 1/6000th-second as JPEGs or RAW files. And along with conventional still imaging, you can also capture wide-screen, full resolution 720p (1280x720) HD video at 24fps using the full range of Pentax optics. For travel or everyday family events, the Pentax K-x makes for an ideal imaging companion.
Other advanced features found on the Pentax K-x include an 11-point, wide-angle SAFOX VIII autofocus system, a variety of automatic and manual scene modes, and a True High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature that captures a series of 3 bracketed images and combines them into a single optimized image with a full range of highlight, midrange, and shadow detail.
The Pentax K-x can capture up to 1900 exposures on a set of AA lithium batteries and is also compatible with AA NiMH and alkaline batteries.

I bought the little K-x to take advantage of it's low light high ISO capabilities. I already shoot with a K20d and K10d and have been less that satisfied with their high ISO images in dim light. After days of research on the net reading the reviews of the the K-x and it's great high ISO images, I finally bought the camera and have shot 2000-plus frames with it. I use it for wildlife photography with a Sigma 50-500mm (bigma) mostly on wild horses.
Compared to my previous experience with the two other pentax bodies and the sigma lens, shooting the same type of images, here is my opinion of the new Pentax K-x:
Pros:
Great useable 800 to 3200 iso images in very low light. Using the higher iso settings I can shoot longer at the same shutter speeds. Noise is less than even my K20d, and even high iso noise on the K-x acceptable, having a more grainy appearance. It has proven to be excellent as a low-light camera.
Faster frame rate. Nearly 5fps. Much better.
Good AF, a bit better than my K20D.
Very inexpensive, but solid body.
Lightweight and uses alkaline batteries. Very handy for carrying in my backpack, and always having a backup set of batts.
Low power consumption. I took over 1600 shots with the batteries that came with the camera. (I updated the firmware before I used the camera).
Cons:
Small for my large hands. I have to watch my right thumb placement; often while handling the camera, my thumb will inadvertently push the ISO button and change it and I have not noticed it. This can be difficult when the action is hot and fast out in front of the long lens and I don't see the iso change in the viewfinder.
Lack of autofocus points in viewfinder. Not a biggie because I always use the center focus option. But still, would be nice to see them.
Non weatherproof.
No option to turn off long-exposure noise reduction. (Like the K20d). I have not used the K-x yet for night images and hope the great high iso performance with give me good star trails.
I am really hard-pressed to find anything that is negative about this little camera, especially considering that it cost less than half the price of my other two pentax bodies when I bought them. I have been very pleased with the image quality and performance of the K-x. It has been exactly what I needed for the type of photography that I do and I can still use all my pentax-mount lenses.
By the way, I made the choice to stay with the Pentax brand after agonizing for weeks whether to sell all my Pentax gear and buy a Canon 7D and expensive 100-400 lens. I hope that Pentax will offer a high-end dslr with weather sealing, larger body, and pro controls like my K20d in the future. If they do, I will still keep the little K-x.

In general, it's not a bad little camera. With hit and miss focusing, my success rate is about 40%. However, a perfectly exposed and focused image will print to 40x60" ! Stunning quality in this respect.
Getting about 1700 images per set of batts.

Comments about Pentax K-x Digital SLR with 18-55mm Zoom Lens (Black):
This refurbished K-x performs every bit as good as the one I bought "new" last year. The K-x is a excellent camera for anyone wanting to take pictures - I could do without all the video features. Aperture and shutter control, a good APS-C sensor and a decent lens. What more could a photographer want? I believe it is the best camera for a traveling professional because it uses AA batteries.

I bought this camera to make the leap from a digital point and shoot to a digital SLR. I last used an old film SLR 10 yrs ago, so it'll be nice to see what I remember and learn even more about photography.
I'm very happy the camera accepts AA lithium batteries and there is a lengthy printed operating manual too. Additionally, there are more than enough manual settings for my needs. Lastly, the price is right and was lowest on B&H!
I haven't found any cons yet.

Comments about Pentax K-x Digital SLR with 18-55mm Zoom Lens (Black):
Coming from a pentax film camera I stayed within the pentax line so I can use my other faster lenses.I have no previous experiance with digital cameras, however I was extremly pleased with the image stabilazation of this camera. With my other camera, I would have never attempted to take a picture less than 1/30 of a second. This camera allowed a decent picture at about half that shutter speed. The higher Iso setting is also helpful without too much noise. The image qulity with the kit lens is okay, not as sharp as i would have liked, but then again my old lenses didn't really do a better job.color was great however. I have one hot pixel [...]One point to be taken though that i find it difficult to focus manually with my older lenses as threre's no split prism and such in the viewfinder, so unless I'm outside, I would not use those faster lenses, but that defeats the whole pupose of the faster lens.

I was looking for an entry level DSLR camera in order to learn photography. For the entry level price, this camera takes great pictures in automatic mode, and has many advanced features, including video. I look forward to experimenting with all the camera can do and learning the art of photography. I especially like the small size of the camera for travel, and the fact that it uses AA batteries that can be found almost anywhere.

I have two small, fast kids and this camera is able to capture the pictures when I need them and can take multiple frames/ second. I was able to also use this as a video camera as well but I have not figured out how to take longer clips than a few minutes. Also, I have been able to use an older zoom lens from a 10 year old Pentax film camera without any issues - it too is auto-focus but was not designed for a digital camera. I have not figured out what i do not like about this camera, but I am no expert.

This is a truly spectacular camera for under[$]. I've been taking photos of my family in low light and have had great results at high ISO. Even with the kit lens I'm getting sharp photos with gently blurred backgrounds. Contrast is great; default saturation is maybe a little high but I kinda like it. In any case it's adjustable. My only problems with it are Live View, which is so slow as to be practically useless, and a slightly awkward reach to the adjustment wheel, which may be partially because it is so small for an SLR.

As a first-timer in the DSLR world, this camera is amazing. You don't really have to learn much more than you would with a point-and-shoot...you just change the dial to take a pic at night, indoors, outdoors, etc. Not much to it really - and it's light enough to carry around wherever you go. The only two downsides I've found is in low-light conditions, like dusk...you sometimes have to play around with the options (night, low-light, etc.) to find the setting that takes the best picture. The other is with the live-view, it's a much slower focus than viewing through the lens, but you're probably taking more photos looking through the lens than you are the live-view, so this might be a moot point. This being my first DSLR, I probably just don't know enough about the settings to choose the right one. Overall, it's a great camera (video is superb too) and would definitely recommend it.

I'm a practicing artist in sculpture. I use the camera for documenting mine, and others 2-D and 3-D artworks. I was looking to upgrade from a 5 year old DSLR and was curious to try the K-X. I found this camera to be very very solid- it felt like a very expensive camera...except for the fact it was a little too small for my liking. My girlfriend held the camera with ease, and found every button to be in the right place. I had a similar conclusion, but it felt just a little too cramped for my liking. I ended up returning this camera, and upgrading to a K-R by Pentax. Both cameras are similar, but the K-R fits in my hand better. The user interface on both is fairly clear, and with some quick looks at the manual- very easy to navigate. The full auto mode produces fantastic results, and with a class 6 memory card, both cameras are extremely fast. I highly recommend either one. If you are an absolute perfectionist, go with the K-R- for the illuminated focusing points, and the better LCD monitor. For most people, the K-X is more than adequate, and for the price- cannot be beat.

I have used film based SLR's for over 30 years. This is the first DSLR that I feel delivers high quality pictures, multiple photographic options including both shutter and aperature priority at a price that made teh switch to digital irresistable. The viewfinder is logically laid out with clear focus and exposure indicators. Autofocus is very quick and seldom fails to deliver the subject in sharp focus.
The two minor issues I have with this camera is the lack of focus point indicatios (a bracket is all the viewfinder provides) and the low light pperformance of teh focus indicators when in manual focus mode. These are minor problems that do not decrease my enjoyment of teh camera, just require some adjustment. Battery life is claimed to be 1900 pictures with lithium ion batteries and it seems likely I will meet that figure. With an 8GB memory card the camera give 1100 high resolution (14.2 M pixels) high quality jpegs before you need to download to a PC>

Comments about Pentax K-x Digital SLR with 18-55mm Zoom Lens (Black):
This is my second DSLR in 3 years. My first one is the Pentax K100D which is quite similar to this one in many ways.
It is quite amazing how much more features and capability can be added to the camera without making it bigger or heavier. Features that made my upgrade worth it are the great high ISO performance, fast continuous shooting capability and wireless flash capability. All the added features also make it a state of the art camera (live view, HD video, etc), comparable to the other bigger names in the market.
The build quality of the K-x is still great but the materials seem a tad inferior to the K100D it replaced. Most noticeable is the plasticky feel of the kit lens (compared to the lens that came with the old K100D). I suppose they have to cut cost somewhere. I also got bummed for not getting a lens hood with the kit lens (which I got with the old kit lens from the K100D). This will add another $20-$30 to my total bill.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase and am still learning how to use all the new features that I got with it.

I'm very pleased with this camera, although I'm using an 18-200 lens. I do find that the flash overexposes subjects in close shooting, however that was easily fixed by 1 stop compensation. I've barely looked at the various scene and custom shooting modes. "Anti-shake" technology works great allowing good photos at low shutter speeds. Very pleased with high ISO response also, although I'm not planning on any extreme enlargements. Make sure to get good batteries. I'm using Sanyo eneloop NiMH.
