The Pentax K-x Digital SLR incorporates advanced DSLR features - including Live View and HD 720p video - in a very capable entry-level camera for those looking to step beyond the limitations of point-and-shoot digicams. Bundled with a Pentax 18-55mm zoom lens (a 27 to 82.5mm zoom on a conventional 35mm camera), the compact Pentax K-x makes the transition to a 'serious' camera system with interchangeable lenses easy and painless.
The Pentax K-x contains a 12.4-megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor that incorporates a sensor-shift Shake Reduction System that allows you to hand-hold the camera at shutter speeds up to 4-stops slower than normal under low-light situations and still maintain image sharpness. Aside from the K-x's bright optical finder, you can also compose images in Live View mode using the camera's 2.7" LCD.
Despite the K-x's entry-level price point, still images can be captured at a fast 4.7 frames-per-second at shutter speeds up to 1/6000th-second as JPEGs or RAW files. And along with conventional still imaging, you can also capture wide-screen, full resolution 720p (1280x720) HD video at 24fps using the full range of Pentax optics. For travel or everyday family events, the Pentax K-x makes for an ideal imaging companion.
Other advanced features found on the Pentax K-x include an 11-point, wide-angle SAFOX VIII autofocus system, a variety of automatic and manual scene modes, and a True High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature that captures a series of 3 bracketed images and combines them into a single optimized image with a full range of highlight, midrange, and shadow detail.
The Pentax K-x can capture up to 1900 exposures on a set of AA lithium batteries and is also compatible with AA NiMH and alkaline batteries.

This is as close to an "ideal" camera as I have touched so far!
After many years of pondering my sticking with K-Bayonet mount, I had tried many Nikons and Canons just to find that my 3 year "old" K100d bodies (I have two for shooting wide and far without swapping lenses at events) were actually as responsive as many other hailed APS-C sensor models.
Even Ken Rockwell's beloved Nikon D40 wasn't faster when I tried it in store :)
Then I ordered this K-x for its movie mode, but never mind that, as the movie mode is just some rarely used icing on the cake.
The K-x honestly competes against full frame models at high ISO shooting (I HATE flash) in low light and has usable iso6400 image quality that I found hard to believe!
Even better is that the autofocus is now super snappy.
With the new kit lens losing its instant focus override, but being lightning fast to focus, together with its IQ between 18 and 40mm it is a keeper, unlike many other kit lenses!
At 55mm it is a wee soft, but great for flowershots and as a slightly soft portrait lens for anybody on a budget! Hey - who needs a 700 dollar "soft" lens, when the kit lens used right is doing the same thing, eh?
With my Sigma 18-125mm walkaround lens, this K-x "thing" is plain all I need to carry for most everything!
The urge and tough choice for which fast and heavy lens to grab is gone, because with the higher iso capability and the vast focus improvement (even wide angle focus is spot on now!) with a run of the mill f/3.5 to 5.6 lens, this camera is hard to beat.
I suspect I'd have to spend a LOT more to get better - and then I kick myself for the money spent, because for the difference what counts more than anything is often to just get lucky and be on the trigger at the right moment, rather than having luxury photo gear!
Pentax has built a real Camzilla in an elegant dress, light weight, capable of big screen performance with images that will satisfy any pixel peeping Tom!
The shutter is fairly quiet, but you can hear it is dSLR - but nowhere near as bad as my old Ricoh KR-5 with its rich old heavy metal "clonk" sound :) Quieter than a K100d for sure!
Live View works dandy - autofocus is slow for sure, but so are the other dSLR cams except the Panasonic Micro 4/3 cams. With magnification though (use "info" button in Live View), you can focus manually quite well!
Batteries - some gripes by some, not by myself - AAs are always available, and the Lithium batts in the box are holding up after over 400 sample and "getting used to" shots with and without flash and lots of screen use!
Oh - did I mention it is fast?
Something else - Pentax finally also fixed the formerly badly behaved flash! No more dark shots or glaring faces - just nicely exposed images that no longer have me hating flash - I could almost get used to using it now!
Get a K-x with its great new sensor (Sony??), its neat Kit lens and a moderate telezoom, like a 50-200 or 50-300, or maybe a walkaround superzoom, like a Sigma 18-125 or 18-200, and you're set for along time - unless you get into LBA - it's terrible disease, but I'm sure B&H loves all LBA (lens buying addiction) afflicted buyers :)
I LOVE my new K-x - hey anybody want a free K20d ?? Just kidding, it is my paperweight now, good ratings or not, I'd need an expensive piece of lead to replace that one ....

Mine came with issues; images were sometimes fairly sharp (the kit lens isn't that good) and sometimes out of focus.
Apparently there was something wrong with the image stabilizer. I was getting fuzzy images in daylight with the image stabilization on at fast shutter speeds (ISO 200, 1/160, IS on).
I was shocked to learn that I would have to pay to have the camera shipped to Pentax for warranty repair, never have I had to pay for shipping a product for repair during the warranty period.
I called the "Customer Service" toll free number and was treated very rudely. I called the next day and dealt directly with a manager (who was quite helpful) to try and resolve my problems.
Basically I don't feel they stand behind their products like their competitors (Nikon and Canon will pay to ship back defective products).
I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out what was wrong with the camera by taking test shots instead of photographs, if you catch my drift.
The camera is compact and solid feeling with some nice features, too bad my was defective and their customer service and warranty policy is so abysmal. I shouldn't need to speak with someone "higher up" to resolve my problem with their product nor should one ever have to pay for shipping a defective product back to the manufacturer.
They lost a customer! I will not be purchasing any product they make ever again (in fact I'll be selling my camera as soon as it's back from repair as a matter of principle - I should have saved a little more and purchased a Nikon).
Had the camera not had the focusing issues (and other aforementioned company issues) I might have given it a strong 4 star rating, instead it gets a 1 star (0 star if I could have rated it so).

I got this camera refurbished because I really wanted a Kx and I couldn't find one anywhere else. It's a great camera for beginners like myself, and I've had zero problems with it. The battery life, contrary to all I've heard, is amazing. It's been quite awhile and I'm still on the batteries that came with it. Great camera for a good price [...]

I bought a refurbished K-x and the flash won't sync with shutter for manual lens. The camera feels like cheak plastic product compare to K200D that I intended to replace. Plan on hold and will continue using K200D. K-5 seems good but is very expensive.

Comments about Pentax K-x Digital SLR with 18-55mm Zoom Lens (White):
I bought this camera for an upcoming trip to Bali. I own a Lumix point and shoot camera that I use often but have been wanting to invest in a DSLR to expand my creativity with photography. I selected the Pentax K-x because of it's ease of use, HD video capabilities (not usually found in a camera in this price range) for it's quick shutter speed at 4.7 fps, and for it's super fast auto focus. I am very impressed with the K-x's performance and overall picture quality. It is a well built, compact and especially comfortable to hold and use. I bought the white version and get positive remarks about how unique looking it is. I have taken photography to a new level with this camera and am enjoying the fantastic pictures I have been able to capture. Images are sharp and well focused even in low-light conditions. It's a terrific price for the amount of quality and features packed into it's modest size. The camera takes 4 alkaline, lithium or rechargeable AA batteries which make it slightly heavier than it's competition, but it's trim profile more than makes-up for it's weight. I'm very pleased with my choice and the Pentax brand.

Comments about Pentax K-x Digital SLR with 18-55mm Zoom Lens (White):
I am not an "early adapter" so I tend to get something which is about to fade out and try to get best deal - so probably, this review might not help who are looking for K-r or K-5 but if you are someone like me, then do not hesitate picking this one up.
I used K200D and unfortunately dropped it and it was done so I decided to get something decent to cover the need until the price of that beast K-5 is more stabilized. I did not expect too much fro m this, so maybe that is why I am so much satisfied. Compared to K200D, it lacks info screen on the top, bit smaller grip, looks more plasticky and no 'super-impose' light but the performance wise, it is awesome! It supports way better high ISO control, faster shutter, and faster auto focus only to list a few!
Just perfect to my need - so again, if you are someone like me who are not always trying to be the first one to use a new release of products, this one would perfectly meet your budget as well as your need.

I used to have a very nice 35mm back in the film days but I've been using P+S's since the digital swap. Finally a DSLR that I can afford and is FULLY featured!
I added AA Batteries as both a pro and a con. Its nice to know that even if you are in East BFE you'll be able to get some new batts if you need them. Its not so nice to have them die on you and they're a bit heavy to lug a bunch around (though they balance out the body of the camera quite nicely).

IS a great camera, i look many K mount lenses and with great price and all have compatibility with this camera!, also it 24p video is great and with some experience with video professional cameras i say that it image quality is very good. great product for price. please lok around for good AA betteries because is the only point that i found a little negative. You can go to mountain with many AA bateries and you dont need electricity to work it but if you want to use it to make video and work on studio you need a special adpater! but is my personal opinion. Machine looks very nice!

Used it mainly for sporting events (football), a few landscape shots and some macro work. I use in in combination with a Tamron 18-200mm and it works flawlessly. Contrary to some reviewers I find the focusing quite fast and very accurate.
The only negative is the flash on automatic settings. The standard setting makes for a very dark picture.

This is my first DSLR and I like it so far. I'm trying to figure everything out - that's the hard part I guess. I just used it at an event and aome pictures are good, some are not so much. It could be me or the camera. The ones indoors with yellowish lighting weren't good, especially with the flash. For some reason the flash doesn't light much up. But I really like the good pictures, so we'll see if I can get better.
All that to say - you have to know how to use it to get good results. I don't know how to use it yet so we'll see!

Comments about Pentax K-x Digital SLR with 18-55mm Zoom Lens (White):
Pentax K-x is a really cheap but high-quality camera. Extremely suitable for beginners who don't have too much budget. The image quality is very good and for this camera i think the 18-55mm lens is totally enough.
A shortcoming of this camera is the orange color it produces when pictures are shot indoors and during nightime. And you have to know much about the applications of cameras in order to handle it well. If you're a DC user who only takes random shots, this camera is not right for you. Choose Canon instead.
Anyway this camera is absolutely worth of its price!

I got this camera mainly for the ability to take video with a real camera lens to get that variable depth of field. Just taking pictures, though, has really been easy and fun, so I got the best of both worlds. There are a ton of features and a full manual mode to help a newcomer to digital SLR's like me learn the ropes while getting excellent quality. Also, I've used the video with iMovie & Final Cut Express 4 with ease.

i bought this camera to take on a trip to Europe. I received it 1 week before I left and did not have a lot of time to learn to use it. I found the camera very easy to use and took it on the trip, used the automatic setting most of the time and came home with beautiful pictures. I am very happy with my purchase and I love the white color-very cool! I used lithium batteries and never had to change them-they are still going strong after 600+ photots.
