Lots of reviews were consulted, many of them several times, before deciding on this camera, my first DSLR since Olympus OM2 days. The other cameras considered were the Olympus E-30 (loyalty to Olympus) and the Nikon D90 (lots of upward migration available). I chose against the E-30 primarily because of the smaller viewfinder and the low resolution LCD, and against the D90 because it seemed somewhat uninteresting as a device. I found lots of very interesting (and surprisingly supportive) discussion regarding the K7 on the Nikon D90 forum at dpreview!
With the help of a photographer friend who could put things into perspective, I selected this camera solely on the basis of the reviews (could not find the camera locally at retail shop), with particular emphasis on the following reported features: large viewfinder, weight and size, ergonomics, absence of gimmicks in the camera software, weather resistance, microphone jack for video, and reasonable cost of Pentax lenses. I wear glasses, and the viewfinder is wonderful; I have large hands and the grip with the notch for the middle finger is incredibly comfortable. The flush placement of the LCD on the left side is not a problem, as some reviewers have noted, as holding the camera beneath the body and lens with the left hand feels very natural due to the size and excellent balance of the camera plus lens. The buttons are well placed and nicely designed with regards to functionality. More importantly, the function of the two wheels for controlling aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation is incredibly well-designed within the different modes available. In short it is a fun tool to use with user settings that allow the camera to behave exactly as needed. The kit lens is very smooth but, not surprisingly, a bit slow for indoor natural light photos -- and yet the photos are nice.
What do I not like? As all formal reviews have commented, the camera is noisy at ISO 1600 and above. Which means that either flash or faster lenses are needed.
Rather than return the camera because of the noise, I kept it because I like the functionality of the camera software and hard controls, the ergonomics are really excellent, the camera is a serious tool which is fun to use, and the color of the images is exactly what I expect based on conditions and where the exposure compensation is set. I feel like the camera gives me the image that I expect, rather than doing some kind of behind the scenes magic and automatically compensating for my poor skill at times. I like the camera so much that I immediately invested more into its success by purchasing 2 weeks later a fast Pentax 55mm f/1.4 lens for portrait pics and a 50-135mm f/2.8 lens for sports pics.
I have not yet printed any images, nor have I uploaded any yet to LightRoom where I am assuming that I will use a de-noise add-on, as I am still learning about all of the features that are offered by a DSLR vs by film SLRs. So, I cannot comment on the real picture quality -- as I am waiting for the portrait lens to arrive before moving seriously into the processing stage.
In summary, rather than a consumer gadget the K7 feels like a serious but very fun tool, which was exactly what I was looking for. It encourages me to use it and be creative. That was my ultimate goal in upgrading from a point and shoot to a DSLR.

Comments about Pentax K-7 SLR Digital Camera Body with 18-55mm Lens:
This is my first DSLR - officially going digital after being a darkroom junkie for 15 years. I use it to shoot a lot of landscape and architecture and candid shots. Outdoors mostly. As opposed to the Nikon or Canon that are in the same field, this camera has water lock which will help me keep it safe in all the strange conditions into which i trapse. Not so great is the high iso quality. Coming from a film background i can not tolerate a pixelated look - so low light and hgh iso are not the best friends to me. But i can use my pentax lenses in this one or on my film camera so i still have the option to shoot in those settings with film.

I sold my Nikon D50 for a more capable camera. The K-7 does not disappoint you. It offers great flexibility and the menus are easy to navigate. I bought it for its fast shutter speed and capability of taking up to five shots for HDR. The camera also can compose its own HDR. The camera is rock solid in your hand. Pentax make great cameras.

I recently purchased this camera, and it is my first SLR. I decided I wanted to pick up amateur photography as a hobby. I spent a few weeks reviewing everything I could find and the K-7 seemed to have overall the best ratings and recommendations for the cost/quality of the camera. Although i have only been using it for a couple of weeks now, I am happy to say it has been very easy to use and takes outstanding pictures. Justin

Comments about Pentax K-7 SLR Digital Camera Body with 18-55mm Lens:
I bought this camera because I wanted to use all my older Pentax lenses. I now miss using my K1000 but I do not miss messing with the film. I really like the ability to shoot in all manual, which I am used to. The Program modes and the autofocus lens are nice and have their place too. The controls all make sense and are placed well on the camera body. The lens that came in the kit is a nice one to start with. The auto focus seems to work well. Better than my ZX5n for sure. I just wish it would use my Pentax AF240FT flash in TTL auto mode. I guess I will have a nice new flash instead. I am really impressed with Pentax's customer service. I spoke with them on the phone about warranty should I need it and they answered my questions and did not act like they were hurried to get me off of the phone. I also e-mailed from their web site about the Digital Camera Utility software that comes with the camera. They replied the next business day with a detailed reason and fix for the issue I was having. Buy it, if you already like Pentax and can not quite swing the K-5, you will not be sorry.

The K 7 works just like my older model so I didn't have to learn new tricks. The lenses were interchangeable saving me some money, which is always nice and I gave the old camera to my grandson who is excited about having a "new DSLR"

it has a good grip and feel. I need to find the time to take more complex photos. I will be taking a digital photography class to learn how I can use the camera to it's fullest. I'm still trying to figure out to use the infrared photo feature on it. Can you help me?

Comments about Pentax K-7 SLR Digital Camera Body with 18-55mm Lens:
After months and months of trying to decide what to buy, I finally decided on this camera. The deciding factors were that it is made of metal, weather resistant, and has an in-camera stabilization. I am not a pro, but these features seem important. The other cameras in this same class lacked these features and feel like toys compared to this one. It is easy to use and takes great pictures....are there others that may be better? Probably, but this camera seems to give the best balance of features for the cost, with decent pics to boot. What more could you ask for?

The weather resistant feature has already come in handy during an unexpected snow shower and I was able to snap away without a worry.
As a new DSLR user, the "Green" button is a great tool for checking the camera's thoughts on aperature and shutter speed and it still allows me to quickly tweak settings from there.
The only down side is that pictures at high ISO settings (1600+) can be grainy.
Overall, great camera and I would buy it again.

I am a long tome owner of Pentax products dating back to the "Spotmatic" which my daughter uses to this day teaching her High school photo class. I am very pleased with the durability of the camera and the resolution in low light conditions. I also love the fact that with the adapter I can still use my old screw mount lenses with great results!!

As an amateur photographer who grew up with a Nikon F2 and outdoors enthusiast, the K7 is an excellent piece of kit. Its lightweight, but solid feel and weatherproofing make it invaluable in the inclement conditions of the Rockies. Just imagine, while everyone else is putting their cameras away in the rainstorm, you don't have a care in the world - except getting that lightning exposure. Image and lens quality are at par (and arguably exceed) the other big names (Nikon, Canon..)

Comments about Pentax K-7 SLR Digital Camera Body with 18-55mm Lens:
I bought the K-7 after spending almost a year reading about digital cameras. You simply cannot purchase a better camera in this price range. The images are absolutely gorgeous, largely due, I believe, to the excellence of the K-7's white balance feature--colors are true and vivid. If you are new to photography, especially digital photography, there is a learning curve, but you can shoot in Green Mode until you master all the elements. This is a very well-built, weather-sealed camera with the smoothest shutter of any I have ever used--perfect for the subtropical Florida environs where I do most of my photography. Do yourself a favor and pass on those plastic toys made by the big companies--they will give you good results, until they are damaged by moisture, sand, dropping, etc. I had very high expectations for this product based on the many positive Internet reviews, but the K-7 has easily exceeded them. I like this camera more the longer I own it. Don't be dissuaded by what others call its one weakness: low-light performance (unless you plan to shoot regularly in very low light conditions, you will not be disappointed). I find good picture quality even up to 2500 ISO, and that's with the kit lens. The build quality is evident the moment you hold it in your hands--weighty (but not heavy), compact, and "tight." What more can I say? The images are nothing less than superb, so order your K-7 soon and enjoy an entirely new level of digital quality.
