The Optoma HD66 Home Projector turns ordinary TV into an event and feature films into big screen experiences up to 300" in size. What makes it unique, however, is that the HD66 is heralding in the age of 3D projection.
Gamers, who will be in the 3D vanguard, will be experiencing an unheard of degree of immersion and depth but the general public will benefit from a growing list of feature films being compiled presently. The HD66 can handle computer content up to 1920 x 1080, putting out a punchy 2500 lumens at a crisp 4000: 1 contrast ratio. 3D content is displayed at a maximum resolution of 720p.
The HD66 boasts a wide-screen aspect ratio of 16: 9 and connectivity which includes HDMI, VGA, S-Video, Composite and RS-232.

I am very pleased with this projector. Projecting onto a 10' screen from a Blu-Ray player, regular DVD's look very good and Blu Ray looks excellent. 720P is definitely good enough for me.
I think the uprezing of regular DVD's from my Sony BDP-S570 Blu Ray player improves the contrast and look of regular DVD's. I am super impressed watching regular DVD's this way although of course on analysis they do look softer than Blu-Ray discs.
Black levels are not super black but are fine. In regular viewing I do not notice any DLP issues. If I scan my head back an forth really quickly I notice a bit of rainbow effect, but seriously who does that when they are watching a movie? I just did it out of curiosity!
Projector is small, light and I see the lamps are comparatively cheap. This for me makes a difference as I do not have to think of the cost of running the projector when lamp replacement is half the cost of some other projectors.
I am using the lamp on economy/long life mode and it is plenty bright.
Fan is audible but not distracting once the movie is playing.
The one issue that should be considered is placement. With only a 1.05x lens finding a suitable place to mount the projector and a suitable screen size and placement took a fair amount of thought.
I would say the image quality is higher sending it a 720P image from the Blu Ray player compared to a 1080P image and letting the projector downrez. Also the projector switches from different resolutions with no visible hiccups when this method is chosen.
Bottom line - for the modest cost this is an excellent budget projector. Rating reflects that. It surpassed my expectations.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD66 Home Theater Projector:
I had a previous model optoma (HD20) and find this projector to be a superb upgrade at a great price-point.
Light output is much better and colors are significantly stronger than my previous unit. I haven't done a color calibration yet but am expecting good things. Blacks appear better mostly due to the improved contrast.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD66 Home Theater Projector:
This projector is now installed on my ceiling, and is for home theater use with a 100 inch screen. I have had it about a week now and am completely blown away. Until now my only exposure to 3D has been in movie theaters. The HD66 is comparable to this experience, mostly limited by my sound system. You do have to adjust the factory settings but when done WOW. The only negative I have is it requires the use of an adapter (3D-XL) to view Bluray 3D movies. However, for a combined price of less than a grand, it can't be beat. I would highly recommend its purchase by others.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD66 Home Theater Projector:
We easily hooked the Optoma up to our HD cable, surround sound system/blue ray player and our computer. The picture quality is unbelievable -- perfectly sharp and we don't even use a screen. (We project directly onto an off-white wall).
We have our projector on a table/shelf as opposed to ceiling or wall-mounted.
We love it. Easy to use. Great picture. The machine does get really hot itself, but we don't have any other appliances near it, so it's fine for us.
I thought I might want one of the Epsons before comparing the picture quality of the Epson and Optoma side by side. The Optoma was far and away the clear winner in my book. MUCH crisper image.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD66 Home Theater Projector:
I received this projector last week for my Home Theather and I'm very happy I finally made the decision to get it. After doing the teawks recommended by projector central the picture is stunning and was able to fill my 120" screen, no worries with a very nice picture. This is my first projector ever so I can't really compare it with any other one, but in comparison to my HD 50" TV is quite incredible. A couple of things that surprise me is the size and weight, I was expecting a huge device, but it's very light and small and actually not too noisy when watching a movie.Probably the only thing to be aware is that the zoom functions won't allow great flexibilty regarding its position, but for that price, I don't really care.[...]

Comments about Optoma Technology HD66 Home Theater Projector:
Got this at a bargain from B&H Photo Video. [...] And I am in Fiji!!About the projector:Pros: Very bright, can watch movies and the PS3 in the day with windows open, very customizable, light weight, silent, rapid on and off and has an excellent picture. Without going into numbers - the picture transforms your room into a theatre. There is no rainbow effect and the screen door is seen only when standing 6 inches from my 15 foot wall screen.Cons: Long throw - I am comparing it to my previous Toshiba ET20 which is extreme short throw. A short throw lens is a great boon in a home theatre projector. I have a projection room that is 25 feet in length and I keep the projector about 18 feet from the screen. Would be difficult to fit it in a smaller room given that most rooms are more squarish than rectangularish. Secondly with the projector kept so far back, space for playing PS3 Move games behind the projector becomes limited.Slight light leakage which doesn't matter due to the adjustable brightness, dinky, cheapo remote (no complaints at the price though), very little zoom, very little lens shift, no included VGA cable to connect to the computer. All in all an extremely good buy. I am just 2 weeks into it, so time will tell. If it had a short throw lens it would be perfect.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD66 Home Theater Projector:
This projector needs a long distance to make a really big picture. That is about the only downside I can see. It's nice & small so it fits on my mantle. Hook up was easy; I'm a real novice when it comes to wiring & I had no problems at all. Picture is gorgeous & sharp. I would recommend this to people if asked & think it's a good value for the price. I've seen much more expensive ones that don't have as good a picture.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD66 Home Theater Projector:
I am using this projector to view DVDs and web video on a Dalite brand screen using a Windows 7 laptop. I did a lot of online research before buying the HD66 from B&H. Anyway, the projector is plenty bright and color is very good. It has all of the connectors I need and set-up was very easy. I use a lot of LCD and DLP projectors at work and having one that identifies the signal quickly and easily is very nice. The HD66 always picks up the signal right away. So far, I see no downside to this projector.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD66 Home Theater Projector:
This small but very inexpenxive projector is absolutely the best projector you can purcahse for the money. I had an $1800 high end Panasonic Projector which died on me just after the 2 yr. warranty expired. I replaced it with this Optoma HD66 Unit for only [$]and have found that it provides a very comparable viewing experience, very easy to setup and operate, and is even 3D ready. Unbelievable value for the price. I would recommend this to anyone.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD66 Home Theater Projector:
I returned this projector because I only have standard def. sources (Wii, digital tuner box, dvd player) and the picture was considerably worse than with my old Optoma H31. I was expecting it to at least look as good as the H31, but it's not even close. Probably looks nice with hi def, but that doesn't do me any good. Also, the colors are horrible out of box. I mean REALLY horrible. You need to adjust it or go online and find proper settings to get a good picture. It's strange they would release it with those default settings. It is very bright if you don't care about picture quality, but once you tweak it for good color and contrast, the brightness is greatly reduced. Oh, and the remote is a mess. Many buttons that don't do anything, no backlight.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD66 Home Theater Projector:
My goal was to view side by side 3d movies from my computer on this projector. However I quickly found out that this was not possible from several sources, including Optoma's own help desk - which, incidently, was no help at all.
After searching for other users of this projector I determined that it would work. IF 1: I had PowerDVD; and 2: I had a more powerful computer and graphics card.
So, this will set me back another $2K. If you already have the requirements, then go for it, otherwise be prepared to bleed some more.
As a 2d projector it sings - enough lumens even in well lit room, quiet running and quick start and stop.

Comments about Optoma Technology HD66 Home Theater Projector:
I wanted a projector for business use (spreadsheets) but also for showing photography. I have only used it for the first use so far, and it looks sharp, clear and bright.
It is not highly adjustable for image size, so you need room to move it forward and back to get the projected size you want.
It does not have the ability to compensate for projecting at an angle to the side (sideways keystone?), which is useful and available on some projectors. It does compensate for vertical keystone.
Note that it does not come with a case, other than the box.
