Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
Dedicated lens hoods are designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Comments about Nikon HN-30 Lens Hood (Screw-In) for 200mm f/4.0 D-AF Micro Lens:
One of the best lenes i ever used, in other words it's the best of the best in macro/micro world at least for me, one thing i don't like on the lens the auto-focus cuz it slow, but over all you should have this lens.

Comments about Nikon HN-30 Lens Hood (Screw-In) for 200mm f/4.0 D-AF Micro Lens:
Solid construction adds to this hood's simplistic beauty. I love the wrinkle finish as it matches the Nikkor 200mm micro it fits. It's length is just slightly too long for me to fit my hand in to place the lens cap but it does block all side light. Love it and recommend it!

Comments about Nikon HN-30 Lens Hood (Screw-In) for 200mm f/4.0 D-AF Micro Lens:
Lens hood is fine ... however, I believe that a $1500 lens should include a plastic hood at no additional cost! Come on Nikon?!

Comments about Nikon HN-30 Lens Hood (Screw-In) for 200mm f/4.0 D-AF Micro Lens:
This a solidly built metal lens hood that adds a little weight to the lens, but the 200mm Micro is a lens that should be used nearly 100% of the time in conjunction with a tri-pod, so that should not be an issue. What may be somewhat of an issue is the fact that the hood is mounted on the lens with threads, therefore care must be given so as not to crossthread it. Also, the hood is not easily stored with the lens, as it cannot be attached in reverse. Other than these minor issues, it is a great product.

Comments about Nikon HN-30 Lens Hood (Screw-In) for 200mm f/4.0 D-AF Micro Lens:
This lens hood dates back to the time when Nikon did not offer lens hoods as standard accessories with a lens. It is also the old screw in type design. That said, it is none the less a welcome addition to anyone purchasing the Nikon 200mm Micro. Great for outdoor use. I only wish that it could be easily reversed, snapped and stored on the front of the lens (like the new lens hoods are). It's awkward to carry when not being used. However, it still serves a useful function for all outdoors, bright sunlight photography.
