My comments are based on using the lens on a Nikon D700. I am shooting three styles with this lens:

CLOSE-UP ART SHOTS -- If you're used to shooting a 10.5mm fisheye on a DX body, you will be a little disappointed by the minimum focusing distance (10.2" as opposed to 5.5") I've read that you can improve this by removing the rear filter, but I haven't tried it yet. The best compositions for me have been scenes with strong horizontal or vertical elements.

LANDSCAPES -- You will get a fresh new perspective on scenes by shooting them with the 16mm fisheye. To avoid excess distortion, keep the focal plane level and parallel to the subject.

ARCHITECTURE -- As with landscapes, a whole new perspective is offered with this lens, but you have to watch your shooting angles to avoid excessive distortion. De-fishing some images in post-processing will provide excellent results with an extremely wide view.

I got this lens for a different look of images to go into my portfolio of images... and that different look it offers. If i would have had to do it again I probably would have spent a little more and got the 14-24 f2.8 Personally I like the straight lines over the fisheye's curved lines.

    Pros:
small, light and quick focus. unique look and definable fisheye look

    Cons:
more of a novelty lens, only a couple of shots per session is what i use this for.

Comments about Nikon Fisheye AF Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

I had been putting off buying this lens as I thought that it would get limited use. Once i start using it, it became my favorite lens of all. Its gives different perspective to the photography. The lens is very well constructed and it produces awesomely sharp images. I would definitely recommend this lens to a friend.

Bought this for a few different shots at weddings. Alot of fun with this. I think the image quality is wonderful, very sharp, and glad to have the 2.8 for low-light situations. Like others have said, the lens cap gets frustrating, but this lens is not one that stays on my camera (D-700) for very long. Still, can't wait to experiment with it in other settings, especially landscapes.

I have been using Nikon equipment to shoot skateboard photography for 25 odd years now.
I thought it was about time to up grade my manual 16mm lens for a fully integrated lens.
I have now used it to shoot 2 major events and the lens has been a knock out success.
Its so nice to have the flash systems integrate with the lens aperture setting etc, and if need be change from Manual setting to one of the cameras other modes if need be.
But more so the tonal quality and sharpness of the new lens is awesome.
                  I'm very happy.

                    This lens is just amazing!
I own ten Nikkor pro lenses. This one has become one of my favourites. I would not have expected a fisheye lens could be so sharp!
I still don't know how often I will be using it, as the fisheye effect is not something you want all the time. For me it was more of a caprice, a toy. But with a great image quality!
So - if you know you really want a fisheye lens for your full-frame camera and can afford it - well, this one is the lens!
The only con (and it is quite annoying, by the way) is the lousy lens cap, which keeps falling off. Taking into account the fact that you cannot protect the front of the lens with any filters, this can become a problem.

Comments about Nikon Fisheye AF Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

This model of this lens has been around for a long time and I expect nikon to update it sometime soon. However, I needed a "fisheye" type lens for an assignment immediately. I had used this same model lens years ago during the old film days and it performed fine. It's really the only choice Nikon offers for a full-size digital (D-700) camera. It's a great lens, but after testing and making large blow-ups it seems a little less sharp than some of my other Nikkor lenses. (300mm, 2.8,VRII - 400mm, 2.8, VRII - 70mm-200mm, 2.8 VRII) I know it's a speciality lens that bends the heck out of the light rays in order to get the wide and distorted image, but I just feel it's not quite as sharp as some of my other Nikkors. Maybe because it's an older design.

This lens is really incredible. The images are so sharp. I had so much fun with this lens on a recent trip to Yosemite. All of the amazing scenery just begged for this lens. I highly recommend it. The front lens cap is not that great. It is just a plastic slip-on. Not very secure.

Really nice toy, lots of fun to play with. It makes the curved corners which look quite funny, but are not applicable to every image, If you want to get rid of the curved corners, it is just one click in the lens correction menu of Photoshop. Must be stopped down to f=5.6 to get reasonable sharpness. As light weighted, that one can carry it with him all the time without noticeable load. The front lens cap is loose and very expensive to replace, and no real alternative from generic manufactures ([*] are you listening?)

I have used indoors in tight spaces. Very sharp and then using Lens Corrections in the newest Adobe Camera Raw.............Amazing. Curved pillars go straight.

Comments about Nikon Fisheye AF Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

There are only 2 fisheye lens in the Nikkor range and this is the only one for full frame. Was waiting to see if there may be an update from Nikon. After all, it first came out in 1993. I am glad I didn't wait. While I have the 17-35mm, the coverage of this lens is much greater at 180 degrees. And because it is a rectangular fisheye, it is very applicable in a lot of situations.

It is not an AFS (swm motor) but that is not a problem at all for this kind of lens. I have tried both the sigma circular fisheye and sigma rectangular fisheye. Don't think the image quality differ that much but and the price difference wasn't great enough to make me go with the cheaper sigma.

There are no aspherical elements or ED glass but frankly it doesn't need them. There is no rubber gasket or Nano coating. But it does come with 3 rear filters and a filter wallet.

The caps are interesting. The front cap is definitely its weakest point. It is plastic and I feel it will wear and not stay on the lens in time. Otherwise, it will wear the paint on the lens and still not stay on in time. Why not make it a bayonet mount or clip mount or something? After all, Nikon charges some $40 for a replacement cap. The rear cap, on the other hand, is a new improvement. It has much larger lens contact area for better seal and fits snugly with new body cap providing seal from the elements. The grooves are much bigger also for better grip and matches the grooves of the new body cap.

No front filters or protector will fit on this lens. So be careful, keep it clean and don't let it get scratched. It does have shallow permanent hood.

Have wanted a fisheye for some time, but was reluctant to spend that much money. Finally went ahead and am so glad that I did. I have used this lens to get some get sunset shots over the river, breath taking is the word for the results this lens produces. Just have to be careful when focusing and snapping the shot or you will have you hand in the photo. The guys at B & H were great when I called and asked questions about the lens prior to purchase, their service and prices are the BEST!

Comments about Nikon Fisheye AF Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

I own the 10.5 fisheye and find it adds to my bottom line for fine art and commercial assignments, and wanted the same ability on my full frame cameras. The fisheye can save the day on commercial shoots where there is little visual interest, but generally only when you find something to get up close to.

This new lens allows me to print much larger and retain high quality in the image then with my older DX format.

Wide open there is some vegnetting but that disappears by f8, which seems to be the sharpest f stop. There are some lateral chromatic aberations but these are easily fixed in processing.

All in all I am very pleased with the lens and will keep it handy in my camera bag for almost all my work.

I took this lens on a recent 2 week trip to France and really enjoyed using it. The lens was great for inside shots of cathedrals, museums, etc. as well as broad outside landscapes. Additionally, I found it fun to get the distorted effect of an interesting person or object in the foreground set against a crisp or bokeh contextual background. I brought several other wide and zoom lens on the trip and found myself using this one the most.

Comments about Nikon Fisheye AF Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens:

This is a specialty lens but with various applications, it adds a new mood and look to your portfolio of images. It´s kind of expensive but nos as much as other 2.8 lenses. It´s really sharp, colors ar amazing , same as contrast.

I'm using the 16 f/2.8 for landscapes and urban photography. Is an awesome lens with excellent results in my D3 and D3s
