The Fujifilm HS10 10MP Digital Camera (Black) brings you features usually found only on professional DSLR cameras--besides the 10 megapixel resolution, the HS10 offers a 30x wide-angle optical zoom lens (35mm equivalent of an astonishing 24-720mm zoom range), high-speed shooting at up to 10 frames per second at full 10MP resolution for 7 continuous frames and sensitivity up to ISO 6400. Use JPEG and/or RAW for highly accessible or very high quality files. The HS10 accepts 58mm filters.
But that's just the beginning: the HS10 has CMOS-shift type image stabilization and a Pro Low Light mode that helps prevent camera shake and combines four rapid high-sensitivity and low-noise exposures into one sharp low-noise photo. Or use the zoom bracketing function--touch the shutter just once and the HS10 takes three shots at a differing zoom magnifications: the original image, a 1.4x zoom image and a 2.0x zoom image.
You can use auto tracking focus to get sharp pictures of a moving person or object; access one of the scene positions to get optimal exposure and focus for specific types of photos, such as portrait, landscape, sport, beach, snow, sunset, night, fireworks, flower, text, natural light with flash, etc., or take a seamless panorama in the camera without a tripod, by simply taking photos as you sweep the camera right or left, up or down--the image processor seamlessly stitches multiple photos together to form a beautiful panorama (up to 260° wide).
And don't forget the gorgeous HD video with 1080p resolution and stereo sound--it can even record at 1000 frames per second to catch the fastest action and play it back in ultra slow-motion! This is a complete picture-taking machine.

We were looking to upgrade our Fuji S5000 and our useless hitachi 480i DVD video camera. We had originally purchased a Canon HFM31 video camera and returned it immediately - the low-light quality was embarrassing. We then considered a 'hybrid' camera - a good quality 'still' camera that shoots video.
After much research I learned that EVERYTHING in digital photography comes down to 2 things: optics and sensor. OPTICS: quality glass and quality construction. Why do big SLR cameras have huge lenses? duh... SENSOR: The great debate right now is CCD vs. CMOS. Basically the CCD is still the 'better' unit for super-rich color but it drains batteries dry. CMOS is the 'newer' technology, way faster and consequently much less taxing on the battery. All the big fancy DSLRs typically run CCD but the Canon 5D which many pros are moving towards for HD video runs CMOS! In addition to sensor type make sure you check size. A 1/4" sensor is typically useless for anything in less then perfect light.
In any case - our Fuji S5000 was CCD and the color depth is unbelievable for a then $500 camera (10 years ago). We tested several units in this category including the Sony NEX-5, the Nikon L100 and the Canon SX30. (The olympus unit is a joke). We were impressed with the Nikon unit but my wife insisted on AA batteries - not a battery pack so Nikon was disqualified.
The Nikon and the Fuji were the only two that shoot Full HD (1920/1080p) video at 30fps. For those of you that don't understand the techy numbers that means the best video quality commonly available today - meaning decent or acceptable 10 years from now.
We took the unit to an indoor water park last week and were very happy with the results. I'm not 100% sure if the color if as good as the S5000 was with CCD, but very happy with the functionality and features so far.
Some really cool features: Bracketing options (multi-frame capture). The S5000 would take 5 pics real fast. This one is customizable and really neat. Also the Panorama frame and the multi-motion remover is really neat.
The cons: minor but nonetheless: 1) video record delay: when you press the record button the screen goes black as it 'switches' to video mode for about 2 seconds. You have to anticipate early what you want to shoot. 2) Lack of custom video control: there are plenty of control for still shooting (inc. full Manual) but video is video - just record it. They could have easily allowed for some more precise settings for the video recording (not really a big deal for family / consumer shooting). 3) High-speed video: the unit has a feature to record 120, 240 and up to 1000fps. The faster you shoot the smaller the resolution gets. I filmed my kid coming down the water slide at 240 fps and the resulting file is so small and grainy its quite useless. This feature is a toy - do NOT buy the camera for this feature you will be disappointed.

I bought the Fuji HS10 for birding and documenting horse shows, soccer games, and motorcycle races. Based on what the lens is capable of doing and its feature set, combined with the retail price point, it is a value. That having been said, there are some definitie issues that need addressing. The lens has noticeable loss of sharpness at its short focal length. This is to be expected on some small scale, but not this scale. The camera seems to munch batteries a little too much for my tastes. There is no DC jack. Huge mistake. Fuji wants you to buy not one but two adapters to power the camera from the wall. RAW capture sends the camera into a coma for several seconds. I bought the camera believing that the high speed shooting included the RAW function. It does not. JPEG only. The USB jack is one of the most uncommon types in existence. There is a number of bells and whistles functions with no adjustability, rendering them virtually useless by default. The manual zoom lens barrel is rather stiff and results in zoom jerkiness during video capture. I expect it to loosen up as time goes by, but why should I have to? The autofocus system can easily be confused when the lens is racked way out. Manual focus too. Dual card slots would have been nice. And the final major complaint is that the software that comes with the camera is weak at best. Everything else works well. The images themselves are quite good considering the tiny sensor. The ergonomics are excellent, sized to fit a grown man's hands. The rear display panel is very legible. The menu interface is quite straightforward and traditionally Fuji. The multiple independent function buttons on the back are very handy. Response time is acceptable, although storage time for complicated functions is on the short side of forever. The HS10 does what it was meant to do - provide a feature rich, high-res, bridge camera with a killer zoom ratio and a value price to people who can't or don't want to go DSLR.

Great for travel photography, candids, easy to carry.
Difficult to zoom for those with large hands, even mine got stuck while rotating. Could not make a single movement zoom for most occasions.
I do not recomend for sports. Did not get a perfect frame, during tennis and show jumping.Delay in shooting action frustrating.

Very nice camera with excellent features. Highlights are: zoom (30x), HD (1080p) video recording, buttons everywhere that control several functions and excellent battery lifetime.
Similarly to the finepix S9100, it tends to overexpose when used in automatic mode (easily adjustable).

A great camera for the money, I use the camera for family pictures and because I work at the airport, I take pics of various aircraft where the zoom comes in handy. I haven't tried all the camera's features but the pictures I've taken so far in low light and snowy situations have come out excellent. The large screen in the back is very sharp and beautiful to look at. The batteries last a good long time and I recorded some video and it just looks like they say in the ad... stunning. The electronic viewfinder eye sensor should be disabled when the viewing screen is deployed out of the retracted position. But other than that minor issue the camera is Fab.

absoutly great piece of equipment !!! it has all the bells and whistles that a beginner would need without spending a ton of money for the 30x zoom to the multiple features on this unit everything is flawless.
Fits in your hands perfectly , just took a little bit of time getting use too coming from a 35mm

I have only played with it a bit and I still have a lot to learn & have only used auto mode. The zoom is great and the pic & video quality are very good. The zoom is operated manually which saves battery life but the gemoetry of the flash assembly somewhat gets in the way of rotating the lens for a quick zoom.

Comments about Fujifilm HS10 10MP Digital Camera (Black):
I purchased the Fujfilm HS10 camera for use in my work as an outdoor/travel writer who frequently needs to shoot decent photos for publication.
I needed a lightweight, compact, camera with a good telephoto lens for shots of wildlife at a distance and a good wide angle lens for big scenic shots and good close-ups of people I've interviewed or fish that have been caught.
And I wanted all this along with the simplicity of a point and shoot with a good selection of scene options to use for various situations, especially in low light and natural lighting conditions.
The Fujifilm HS10 was virtually the only camera I found that fit my needs without having to move up to a big, bulky, SLR with multiple lens.
I especially liked the fact that it would operate on widely available AA batteries and have since found it will run for days on the set of rechargeable batteries I purchased for it.
I have been impressed with the camera's capabilities although it did take quite some time to learn the basic functions and many options available in its extensive menu.
I found the lack of a printed manual that could be carried along with the camera in a gear bag was a real hassle because of the need to consult the instructions frequently during the initial and ongoing learning process.
I had to figure out how to print one out at home from the PDF provided on the supplied disc because the local copy shop wouldn't do it due concerns about copyright infringement.
This was a hassle I didn't need and Fujifilm should have provided one with the camera.
But other than that I've found the camera very satisfying to work with, doing what I wanted and expected from it.
The 30x telephoto really reaches out to capture long distance images and when shot at maximum file size the pictures blow up quite nicely.
The wide angle function takes in big scenic vistas while also producing the kind of in-your-face pictures I like to take.
One of the drawbacks noted by some professional photographers who reviewed the camera that I read was they found the picture quality lacking considering the camera's cost.
But I found the quality was fine for my use which includes web, newsprint and magazine purposes and I felt I more than got my money's worth out of the camera due to its all-in-one lens.
Perhaps because I was moving up to this camera's level of performance I found it met and exceeded my expectations for photo quality. I suspect anyone moving up from a standard point and shoot would be equally happy with the photo results.
The camera also comes with many bells and whistles that make it fun to use, like the sunset scene mode which when was used for taking fall foliage photos at dusk really produced some incredible results.
But I found the picture stitch function very difficult to use and haven't mastered it yet.
While more than pleased with the cameras' performance most of the time I was annoyed by the lack of instruction in the manual on how to employ the use of forced flash to fill in the faces of subjects being shot outdoors.
The manual does not specify in which scene modes the forced flash can or cannot be used and figuring it out on my own, in the field, was a real challenge.
Another thing that was bothersome is the fact the photo display button is located on the lower right hand corner of the back of the camera where it's frequently and inadvertently activated by the user which interrupts the photography process.
Nonetheless, this camera was designed to fill a specific niche in the market as a bridge between point and shoot cameras and entry level SLR cameras and I think they did a good job in that regard.
This camera is small and light, has a lot of functionality and its multipurpose lens makes up for any of the cameras' minor flaws.
I should mention that this camera will also shoot high quality video but I haven't explore that option yet so I will not comment on that function in this review.
But one last thing is I especially like the fact that the camera will operate on widely available AA batteries while also run for days on a set of rechargeable batteries. And a 4 gig media card stored more pictures than I thought possible and according to the manual will shoot a couple hours worth of video.
So overall I love this camera because it fit my needs exactly and I've found that I have been using it a lot more lately because I love the great results I've been getting.

I'm a professional photographer. So far theonly good thing I find with this camera is that colors are true. There is a large lag from when you press the shutter till when you the photo is written to disk. The EVF or the place you look through to take a photo turns completely black till it adjusts itself after you place your eye to it. Although it has an diopter the picture in the EVF is blurry and will adjust via the adjustment wheel but it goes back to original adjustment after you turn the camera off. Also the focus via the LED or EVF is jumpy and doest behave as my other cameras I have and had do-the Sony DSC-H2, H5 and H10, the Canon S2IS, Nikon D40. If I didnt take already 200 photos I would return it in an instant and purchase the Canon S30IS. I wouldnt recommend this camera to anyone. The extended warranty although I havent used it yet sounds very sound
