The Olympus Stylus Tough-8010 is a compact 14-Megapixel digital camera with a 28mm 5x optical zoom lens designed for people with an active lifestyle. The camera is waterproof to 33' (10.06m), shockproof to 6.6' (2.01m), crushproof to 220 lbs of pressure, and freezeproof to 14°f (-10°c). This makes the camera perfect for beach going, swimming, skiing, climbing, hiking or any other outdoor activity, or tough environment.
Setting the camera for the perfect photo is easy with scene modes that include Beach, Underwater Snapshot, Underwater Wide 1, Underwater Wide 2, Underwater Macro and Pets. Accessing the camera's controls is a snap with Tap Control. This is especially convenient underwater or while wearing gloves.
The camera has features that allow you to capture the action even in low light. Dual Image Stabilization will keep your images sharp, and if the image is better captured in motion, the camera will take HD videos. The 2.7" LCD screen allows you to compose your still and video images and review them after capture. The camera takes SD/SDHC memory cards, but the built-in 2GB of internal memory allows you to take many photographs without a memory card. All of these features make the Olympus Stylus Tough-8010 the perfect camera to take with you when the going gets tough.

Did not expect this camera to have lots of bells and whistles. I have other cameras for that.Being waterproof and 14 MP is what this camera is all about.
Don't worry about about Mac software not being able to find camera. You should be using a card reader for faster uploading speed anyways.
Buy this camera and enjoy it - Everywhere!

Cannot recommend yet because right out of the box the latest Olympus 2.3 Software used with Mac OS 10.6.3 will not detect this camera. So, I cannot check/update firmware. Not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling. Otherwise the camera works as well or better than our 1030SW, and it is certainly more rugged and reliably sealed (only one double-locked hatch for card, battery, cables). Other drawback is lack of wheel which was very convenient on the 1030SW, but I understand that buttons are more reliably waterproof than wheels.

Comments about Olympus Stylus Tough-8010 Digital Camera (Black):
This is my second Tough8010. The first was a charm, stolen on vacation. But the newer model has a long lag time on the shutter, I find the exposures on the flash totally inconsistent , usually blown out, and now for the second time Ill have to return it to Olympus because the USB cable/connector will not talk to my computer. It will not charge or download pictures. Other cameras are cheaper for the same properties. My battery life is minimal and the touch control seems to self activate. Very frustrating.

Comments about Olympus Stylus Tough-8010 Digital Camera (Black):
I purchased this camera only a few weeks ago to take on a snowboarding holiday.
I am very impressed with how the camera performed. All the photos are clear and crisp. The settings are easy to use. And the tap control settings were fantastic, as we didn't have to take off our gloves to take photos.
As for the 'tough' properties of the camera... It has withstood all that we have thrown at it; numerous crashes, dropped in snow and water. It hasn't faltered once.
As other reviews mention, there is a slight delay in turning on the camera, however, I didn't find it to be much of a problem.
This is a great point and shoot, for people on the go. Highly recommended, it has surpassed my expectations.

Comments about Olympus Stylus Tough-8010 Digital Camera (Black):
I bought this camera primarily to do casual underwater shooting in our swimming pool. Putting a camera underwater the first time is a scary event, but no leaks so far. The controls are pretty straight forward but I would like to have a way to view shots already taken without turning on the camera (like most Canon products). The lens is pretty small so getting a shot with half above water and half underwater is tough with the water movement. I would have liked to have an instruction manual without downloading and printing 83 pages. The included AC adapter requires that the battery stay in the camera and is recharged via the USB function. A seperate stand-alone charger is available for plus cost. It's a fun camera and worth the price, at least to me.

Comments about Olympus Stylus Tough-8010 Digital Camera (Black):
Bottom Line Up Front: I've continuously required service for Tough Camera products due to their lack of reliability and lack of guaranteed durability.First Failure: I purchased the Tough 6020. Shortly afterwards, and with little reason, the front panel was dented causing the camera to be inoperable.Second Failure: I replaced the old camera for the new Tough 8010. The SDHC slot was damaged because a tiny pin was bent backwards, causing the camera to be inoperable. (No...I didn't try to put in the card backwards)Third Failure: The repaired Tough 8010 lens cover was jammed open and couldn't close, causing the camera to be inoperable.Description of Failures:I originally purchased the Tough 6020 camera to be used on my 2010 Iraq deployment. I had it protected in a case and stowed in a pouch in my vest. The product was found a few hours later to have a dent on the front panel. Despite the 200 lbs. load the camera was claimed to withstand; it would not work. I sent it to Olympus, as the camera was covered under a year warranty. The product was repaired, but could not be mailed back to me because Olympus is not able to mail to addresses overseas. I had the camera shipped home and decided to give it to my parents. In the mean time, I purchased a newer, Tough 8010 and had it mailed to me in Iraq via [...].After I received my new Tough 8010, I inserted the SDHC memory card correctly. I took pictures, but couldn't save them on my memory card. I took out the card and reinserted it. It still wouldn't work. After inspecting the SDHC memory card slot, I discovered a tiny pin to be bent backwards. The camera was covered under factory warrantee, so it was sent to Olympus for repairs. After the camera was repaired and sent to my home, my parents sent the camera back to me. This process took months to complete; so I didn't get many pictures taken during my deployment in Iraq. Awesome...I know...After returning home from my deployment in 2011, I was using the camera in a park. The camera mysteriously stopped working because the lens cover was stuck open. I sent the camera back to Olympus because it was still covered under factory warrantee. I told Olympus I want my money back and was told by a customer service representative that this option was not available. I was told I had to keep this camera after it's repaired, and to take up any issues regarding returns with the original seller. This issue is still ongoing.

I bought this camera before going a 8 day rafting trip through the grand canyon. I don't baby my "toys" so this camera was thrown around, hit aginst rocks, submerged several feet(not near its 33' limit) and was really just tortured. This camera took every hit without a problem. The photo quality was better than I expected and this goes double for the video. I am very please with my purches and would recommend this product to anyone into outdoor sports. There were several other people with this camera on the trip, some mostly older models. We all agreed bang for buck you can't beat this camera.

I am a fishing and hunting guide and need a camera thats tough, easy to carry and simple to use. This camera covers it all. Takes awesome pics and video, even underwater. It is small, which makes it a little hard to hold it still while shooting video but is great with a mini tripod.Saved $50.00 buying from B&H. [...]

i am using the stylus for outdoor photos while snowshoeing, skiing, and hiking this winter. It is a very user friendly camera with easy to reference functions. The real selling point of this camera is the durability and applicability for my intended use. The only drawback so far was the software is not seamlessly compatible with a Mac format. Love the camera and would recommend it to anyone looking for a bulletproof camera with functional applications.

Comments about Olympus Stylus Tough-8010 Digital Camera (Black):
I've only had this camera for two days, so I haven't fully explored everything about it. I bought it for use during snorkeling and some light scuba diving. Unfortunately, I've got to wait a couple of months to put it through its paces. There are two things that I can speak of at this point though. First, as many other reviews have mentioned, the auto-focus is a little slow. I've had Olympus cameras in the past and didn't have this problem, so I wouldn't have thought this would have been an issue. Still, it's not that bad. Once I learn more about the camera, I might find a setting that will speed things up a little. The other issue, which is a bit annoying, is that the battery has to be in the camera to charge. There is no external charger, which is sort of a pain if you have another battery you want to charge. The camera utilizes a USB cable that can be plugged into a computer to charge or the supplied wall adapter can be used. The USB cable can plug straight into the wall adapter. Once again, aside from the two negatives I mentioned, it doesn't seem too bad. I suppose I'll see in two months.

I took this camera on a research trip to Belize. I took it snorkeling for hours at a time and it worked out great. It is also awesome to use for fishing/boating/swimming, skiing/snowboarding, and anything else that you would normally be scared to take a normal camera. This camera also has a great macro and super macro function. HD movies look very clear. So far I have been satisfied with the battery life. The only thing I would improve is the start up speed and maybe improve the auto-focus.
