I am a professional photographer who needs to carry a P&S compact camera for those moments when I can't or don't want to carry a large DSLR. I purchased my first Lumix four years ago and beat it to death in Nor'Easters, trips to the beach, and just about every other place on the east coast. The camera performed so well that I barely missed my DSLR. What was so good about it that I'd buy another and recommend it to friends and associates? Here goes:
Exposure compensation is my best friend on any camera, but especially this one. I never expect to just turn any camera on and take great shots under any circumstances without having to adjust exposure. Professionals demand it on their high-end cameras and we certainly don't want to buy a P&S without it. So many of the reviews that I read note poor performance in low light, however if the shooter takes the time to learn about exposure compensation it will cure most of the problems. Just over expose in low light and use the metering modes on the camera as they are meant to be used. Professionals spot meter when scenes call for it, so get in there and change the meter once in a while. You will be happy that you did!
That Leica lens is the sweetest on the market for this class of camera. It is large for the size of the camera and it allows more information to reach the censor.
The control are so handy that I can't even tolerate the menu interface of other cameras that don't offer external exposure compensation, flash control, etc on the outside of the body. Yes, you can knock them out of place fairly easily, but you can do that on a professional DSLR as well.
This camera provides crisp, color-accurate images in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. take the time to read about the controls and use them in the proper shooting situations. This camera is easy to master once you know a little bit about different shooting situations and what the controls do.
I agree with a poster re Lumix and the flimsy lens "protector" - that's the part that finally failed on my old Lumix. But the camera still works and I just keep it in a small cloth case, which is exactly what I'll do with this one. No camera is meant to be tossed in a purse unless it is one of the "tough" series that Panasonic and Olympus offer. You can't treat your camera like a make-up case or a pack of smokes - it will suffer after a long period of misuse. That being said, I do think that is the only issue that Panasonic could improve. Even with that issue, I still purchased another and will probably do so again. The images that I have taken with this line of camera far surpass any other in its class. I know because I took over 100k images on my last one and plan to do the same on my new one. Thanks, Panasonic, for listening to what professionals need in a P&S camera!

Bought for daughter's wedding. Took lots of photos. Had set image size to larger format but somehow, when deleting some photos it changed the format to 640 x 480. Seems the delete button ...Read complete review
Bought for daughter's wedding. Took lots of photos. Had set image size to larger format but somehow, when deleting some photos it changed the format to 640 x 480. Seems the delete button also has photo size options, so switching to camera from preview must have hit the button accidentally. So....... all the photos of my daughter's wedding are 640 x 480 and can't be printed to decent size. There were some great photos too! Able to post online but was disappointed. Photos were easy to take, but in darker light with different scene options, there are delays from pressing the button to actual photo taken. I suspect that once I get more familiar with all the controls, I'll have more success. The original photos I took to try the camera out, before the image size problem and wedding, were crisp.

I have an older Lumix with the Leica lens and thought it was great quality for the price. I purchased this camera for another department I work with to have as a backup to our Canon 40D SLR. This Panasonic hasn't been very impressive, although I think part of that has to do with the users' lack of knowledge/understanding of photography and the camera settings. Nonetheless, I was hoping it would be a good point and shoot for them to use, but the quality of the images hasn't been great.

This camera is easy to use and takes very crisp pictures. I use it to take photos of my grand-daughters and I have a special setting on the camera for each of them that lets me know, to the day, how old they were when each photo was taken.
The only problem with the camera is that the delay is a little slow.

Has easily smugged view window. Overal, with the limited pix I've taken, seems to be an OK camera to use. Not as user friendly as I'd hoped and not a detailed handbook as I'd liked. (I'm "not" one to use the internet for instructions. More a hands on)

Haven't had this camera that long, but so far it's been great. It was easy to use right out of the box, and has enough flexibility to suit a casual photographer as well as those who want to use manual settings. The zoom is fantastic - I'm getting really clear shots at maximum zoom with great detail. Also appreciate the ability to zoom while using the video. I also like that this camera isn't too wimpy in size -it's compact, without being so small you feel like you can't get a good hold on it. LCD display is very clear, but a separate viewfinder would have been nice. Another annoyance is that is doesn't come with a full printed manual, only a CD

I wanted a P&S to fit in my pocket book. I shoot with a Pentax K7 SLR and also own a Canon G11 which is just a little too big for slipping into my small purse.
This Lumix has been very useful at my job, taking impromptu pictures of art classes for our quarterly brochure. The pictures are clear and very useful for documentation. Also the smaller camera is less intrusive than my SLR.
I just wanted a point and shoot- did not need all the benefits of the Canon G11 which I already own. For the price this is a great deal!

I got this camera after two co-workers got it and showed me the quality pictures from it. I was tired of having a point and shoot camera that was only good in outdoor mid-day lighting, and wanted something more versatile. This camera has an awesome zoom that functions really outstandingly in low light conditions, as well as pretty much any condition. I love the different priority settings that allow you a little more artistic control also.

I have previously had Lumix products and found them to be reliable, high-quality performers at a very reasonable price and the ZS5 is no exception. It has a variety of shooting mode options including a reliable fully automatic mode. On top of that, the video is very crisp and clear, even when using the zoom during filming. The 16x zoom is amazing and the wide angle is something not found on most point and shoot cameras. I got this camera a day before going on vacation because I wanted a small, lightweight still and video camera with a strong zoom and wide angle. This camera fits the bill and the picture quality with the Leica lens is exceptional. The only thing that would improve it is a viewfinder! As with all point and shoots, you can't see a darn thing in the LCD when it's sunny out...and, isn't that usually when we want to shoot? Other than that, it gets my top recco.

We loved this camera when we first got it. It was recommended that we just buy this one camera for video and still photo capabilities. It takes good pictures and is fairly easy to use.
The problems we had were that the screen started showing these lines going down the middle. It was only a few at first but it strated to grow and now you can't even see what you are taking a picture of anymore. And a peek through viewfinder could help with this, but it doesn't have one.
Second problem is that downloading the video onto my computer was easy, but I can't do anything with it once it's there except view it the software provided. You can make DVDs but that's not really what I want to do. I can't figure out how to upload it onto Picassa or anywhere else to share with family. That is really annoying.
Now I am just going to buy a video camera that is easy to upload.
And we thankfully bought the warranty and will be sending the camera in for repairs.

I have't had the camera very long, but the pictures I have taken with it have been very clear. The 12x lens has a nice range and the macro is quite good once you figure out how to use it. The instant zoom feature is nice to catch a quick wildlife shot. It also fits well in my hands; I like its design. It is a bit slow between shots however.
