I've put off purchasing a waterproof camera after reading reviews on image quality - I'm picky. The two cameras in this category that seem to have the best ratings for image quality were the Panasonic and the Canon D10. I picked the Panasonic even though all my other cameras are Canon. It just seemed the better form factor. After seeing the results from our last vacation, I wish I had purchased sooner. The kids loved seeing themselves in the water, and under the water. While the image quality isn't as good as even a cheap SLR, it was almost comparable to the Canon SD880 we carry around. I carried both the 880 and the TS2 on the first trip to get some comparison pictures, and while the Canon was better the Panasonic was good enough. I'll carry just the TS2 for the next vacation.
I wasn't too surprised with the camera as most of the reviews were accurate: yes the precaution warning is annoying showing up each time you turn the camera on, water drops and suncreen on the lens can interfere with the picture, etc. The camera is easy to use, and I didn't have any issues figuring out the menus and settings. As far as operation, it's a typical point and shoot.
Of course where the camera shines is in the water. All image quality comparisons go out the window when you start looking at pictures that you can't get otherwise. None of my Canon SLRs would take a great picture of my son 3 feet underwater coming off the water slide, or under a water fall, or in the ocean with waves breaking over the top of his head. They simply would die in the environment. Pictures under water were ok at a distance, colors washed out and such, but once you got within 3 - 5 feet colors became vibrant again. Video worked well and the camera didn't get too confused when submerging and then removing the camera while filming.
I carried the TS2 in the front pocket of my swim shorts, attached to a reasonable length of stretch cord that was fastened to my shorts. That way I could pull the camera out and have enough room to bring the camera to my face, but if I needed to drop the camera in a hurry (like when my youngest capsized in a wave) I could just drop the camera and it would dangle in the water. Even if the camera was in my pocket I didn't have to worry if it fell out. I found the silicon sleeve to be minimally useful. It did make it easier to grip the camera, but it snagged on my shorts trying to get the camera in and out so I ended up just not using it.
I also found that dunking the camera in the water right before a shot helped prevent getting a droplet on the lens that interfered with the shot. Getting sunscreen on the lens was also a problem, but not a significant issue. I ended up carrying a small microfiber with me to wipe the sunscreen off - it helped even though the microfiber was wet.
I ended up buying an additional battery, even though the nature of the camera prevented me from using it. You are supposed to let the camera dry before opening, so if the battery is dead I wasn't going to swap in the middle of activities anyway. I did find that even after letting the camera dry over night, when I opened the battery case I would find a small drop of water in the compartment on the inside of the door. It was inside the area of the seal, so I thought it had to have leaked, but possibly it was just a bit of water that hadn't fully evaporated and got in on opening. When the battery and memory card were removed, there was never any water on them so the leak, if it really existed, was minor. I was so happy with the pictures I got, I may just risk changing the battery on the next trip - if a droplet of water gets in, I'm not sure it would be enough to do much harm. That said, battery life was ok, but not great. The other risk for opening the camera by the pool or beach, is that the manual warns not to get any debris in the compartment that could interfere with the seal. Weigh that for what it's worth before buying a second battery.
I did push the camera beyond the limits identified in the manual. I seem to remember reading that you aren't to keep the camera submerged for more than 60 minutes at a time, but when we were at the pool it was generally in the water in my pocket for hours on end.
I didn't deliberately drop the camera to test it's toughness, but it did fall out of my pocket and got dragged along the bottom of the lazy river for 15 minutes or so, and I didn't notice any issues other than some superficial scratches on the corners of the case (this is when the silicone cover would have been nice).
Overall, I love the camera. No, it's not a Canon 7D for picture quality, but accept the image quality capabilities and embrace the ability to take the camera in places you couldn't before. My boys got more enjoyment out of seeing themselves underwater, even with sunscreen smudges and poor lighting and washed out colors than they have with "better" pictures from an SLR. That makes it worth every penny.

Bought specifically to use when kayaking so that my SLRs would stay at home. I've now used it once -- the critical innards stayed dry.
That said -- the camera is a mixed bag. Distance photos were good...both color and "into the water" views were good. Closeups (macro mode) were bad -- the camera insisted on focusing on the background -- this was true with the focus set on "spot". The lens is unprotected, so you need to keep the camera in a dry clean place to the extent feasible.
I can recommend the camera for water-risky activities except I would not recommend for macro use.

This is a great little camera and I was amazed that it survived going snorkling with me in Puerto Rico. I'm not into trying to do a video and even though I've downloaded the AVCHD clips, my Corel video editing program seems to be having some difficulties. And the video program they give you is very, very basic.

bought this to replace the TS1 we broke while jet skiing in Bora Bora. We salvaged the pics from that trip and everyone was amazed at the quality of the pics and videos we took underwater and on land. Panasonic seems to have learned their lessons and improved this version; locks on the access doors, silicone cover, etc. Can't wait to see the quality of the shots with 14 megapixels!

it definitely fits the profile it's set for. though not an ace in low-light conditions, the TS2 is a gem for outdoor junkies or for those who just splash around in the pool a bit too much.
i waited quite a while to write this review coz i wanted to really test the camera out. first off, went skiing in whistler and boy was this camera handy. got excellent shots, even action shots, without worrying about my camera freezing. next is an all day splashfest in palm springs, cali. took great shots in and under the water. and as a bonus, i got nice night-time video coz of the video light doubling LEDs.
i did notice a bit of blur but quickly found out that it was coz i kept greasing the lens with my fingers. a few quick wipes and all's clear again.
all in all, i am very satisfied with the TS2.

We have a Sony DSC-HX1 and used to have another point and shoot for "daily use", that died falling in the sea. So buying a waterproof/shockproof camera for daily use seemed like a logical idea.
The very good surprise about it is the picture quality, as good as any other point and shoot.
it's also very easy to use with simple menu navigation

Very easy to use and set up. Took hundreds of pictures at pool side and on dive boat without worrying about getting camera wet. We did take a lot of pictures snorkeling on the reefs at Cozumel, Mexico.

Great camera...bought it to use in water so I can't wait till I go to Hawaii and try it out. Sharp photos compared to my other point and shoot camera with the big name. Great camera!

This camera is, in my opinion, the best you can get when you talk about Point and Shoot. There are several adjustments you can do to improve the quality, but even when you use it in Auto Mode, the pictures comes out really really good. The 16:9 aspect is fun, and i personaly think that photos in this mode seem a little bit more professional. It's a tough camera too, with the underwater capacities. Photos underwater in pools and at the see are really fun to do and see.
Also, the video quality is good. Being able to zoom in and out (a function that is not avaible in every point and shot) is very good. By the way, 4.6 optical zoom is very good too.
I've been with the camera now for something about 10 days, and i'm loving it. I strongly recommend that you also buy a large capacity SD Card, because in the 14Mb, the photos comes out really heavy.

I bought this camera for my Honeymoon to Thailand. We used it in the resort swim up bar for some happy snaps and snorkeling.
It was a really fun novelty being able to use it whilst swimming.

When I wrote my earlier review - I was concerned about the sea worthiness of the TS2. Since that review - I have been taking the memory card/battery out only in airconditioned rooms. And, I have kept the camera out of direct sun - since then - no more condensation issues.
It is a fun built like a tank little camera. In and out of the water. Hence another star.

Use the camera for shots of the kids down at the beach. Great shots and very solid feel. Was a little slow in taking faster actions shots, however it refreshes fast so you can take more continuous shots.

I wanted a small, inexpensive camera to take to Maui so that I wouldn't have to pack my professional gear and worry about a pack on the beach. I chose this camera because of the underwater capabilities and for it's durability on land if dropped or in colder climates when I ski. It was not difficult to figure out how to use the different functions even though I didn't have the manual.
My only complaint with this camera, as with most small digital cameras, the display window is not easy to see in the sun or underwater which makes it frustrating to try and frame my shot as I'm used to the good old viewfinders!

a bit bulky when i first took a look at it. i've always been a canon guy but their underwater camera is absolutely hideous. features on this camera are easy to use although i dont like how you can over-rotate the menu wheel. although the camera is bulkier than other manufacturers with similar specs, the picture quality/features are superior after comparing them side by side. camera is priced decently, great camera for a decent price.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 Digital Camera (Orange):
First, after one trip I am impressed with the camera. I bought the camera to use for snapshots on hunting and fishing trips where the camera will be subjected to the elements. So far, I am impressed with the results. the pros are it's small size, similar to the pocket cannon's, the silicon slip case to help mitigate any impact, the waterproof door seals, and the leica lens. It has excellent resolution as you would expect from a leica lens.
The only con is it's lack of raw formatting.
Do not buy the cheap screen protector offered as an accessory. Buy the Giotto 2.7 inch screen protector also available from B&H, infinitely better. Also, while I can't recommend a specific case because of a lack of research or use I advise that you buy a larger protective case than either of those offered at the accesory site for the camera. The cases offered are too small when the camera is used with the protective silicon cover. And, the cover is too functional not to use on the camera all of the time.
This is a great little camera for the active person to use outdoors.

The camera is a great all around "pocket camera". It fits in all but my tightest jeans pockets. The images are as good as can be expected from a point and shoot camera.
But, I have doubts about its seaworthiness. Even for snorkeling. I have only been in the ocean three times with it. And, yesterday - it definitely showed signs of condensation behind the LCD. This does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling.
Underwater image quality is good. Point and shoot good. Not DSLR with external lights good.
And... video is very good both in and out of the water.
I would recommend this camera to a friend. But, as of now I can not recommend it for snorkeling or diving.

I purchased this camera for my wife to replace her old point-and-shoot that took one too many tumbles. So far, the camera takes great pictures for a rugged style camera and it has survived being banged around by my wife and kids. It makes a great camera for our hiking trips. We don't plan on using the camera in the water but it is nice to know that it will survive getting wet or if it takes an accidental trip into the pool or mountain stream.

Bought the camera just because liked the reviews in the WEB, but after getting it - satisfied by the product very much. Very durable but light design, good overal picture quality. The silicon case adds much, but restricts the access to the buttons of zoom and shutter. LCD screen quality is OK, but not perfect. Need to remove the battery to charge it - not pluggable power cord.

Bought the camera for its rugged properties. Have two younger kids and are always heading outside to the beach and pool so the waterproof property was a huge load off. With it being shock proof, we are not so jumpy when the kids grab the camera and want to take photos. The overall size is nice. The buttons are in convenient locations that make sense. The picture and video quality are a huge boost from what we were shooting so we are really happy with the camera.
Have not found anything that is not great about it....yet.
