The BeachTek DXA-5DA DSLR Camera Passive Dual XLR Mic Adapter provides professional audio results when capturing video with a DSLR camera. Connect the DXA-5DA to the microphone input of the DSLR camera and connect up to 2 mono microphones, or a single stereo microphone. Controls for volume and mic/line level operation are featured. A unique AGC Disable feature controls the fluctuating volume swings that plague most cameras with Auto Gain Control built in. The DXA-5DA may also be used with regular camcorders.

Make sure you experiment before you go out into the field. Settings on the transmitter, receiver, Beachtek, and camera need a ton of testing before you get the right settings. The headphone feature is nice, but doesn't give you a true 'feel' for what the camera is recording. The VU meter on the Beachtek is pretty worthless. I would have rather they eliminated that feature and charged $100 less (what IMHO the unit is really worth). MAKE SURE YOU TEST EVERY MIC AHEAD OF TIME! My Rode videomic actually sounds better plugged directly into the camera.

With the recent influx of DSLR cameras, I wanted to incorporate a product that would get me the best audio possible to camera.I tried sending a mic level signal to the cameras, but was never sure what was making it down the line to the camera position. So I picked up the Beachtek box due to the headphone output that I planned to use as a confidence feed (as much as that is possible with these cameras).First the good news. This unit works pretty well. I was using this with a Sound Devices 442 mixer, sending a line-level signal to the camera. I plugges my pigtails into the XLRs and the headphone jack for my "confidence" feed. The AGC defeat is definitely a must-have feature for the 7d. The input meters are a little wonky and I'm still not sure what exactly they represent. I had the input pots turned up about 80% which gave me a solid level at 0dbu from the mixer. The G1/G2 switch seemed to eliminate a hum/buzz that I was picking up from an outboard video monitor the DP was using. Now the negatives. The return audio from the headphone output sounds HORRIBLE. It's about equal to phone quality. This initially freaked me out, but a quick download of a test file to a nearby computer showed that the sound hitting the camera was solid. I did not notice the "squeal" that some folks seem to have with camera playback. Also, the batteries have NO effect on the audio going to camera. The battery powers only the LCD display/backlight and the headphone circuit. The bottom line with working with DSLR cameras is ALWAYS RECORD A REDUNDANT FEED. Plus ALWAYS record a test file that you can listen to on a computer. Playback on the camera does not allow you to hear any minor problems. The Beachtek doesn't have much of a professional "feel" to it, with oddly marked level meters and a cheap plastic body. So at [$], it feels about a hundred dollars overpriced.

I attached this guy to my CANON EOS 7D to run sound straight to my cam. At first we couldn't get rid of a ridiculous, high whine. We tried all the settings and nothing worked. Finally it just kind of stopped randomly, but now when we record the sound is very weak and sounds almost far away. We've only shot with the 5DA 2 times, thought I'm unhappy with is so far. I'm going to give it a few more chances before returning it.

Works fine for me, with a Canon EOS 60D with sound recording set on manual.
A bit noisy, but no problem with any sound editor.

Comments about Beachtek DXA-5DA DSLR Cameras Passive Dual XLR Mic Adapter:
Nice to have mono/stereo control and XLR inputs, but the automatic gain control (AGC) does not work on my 7D. What is scary is that it sounds fine while monitoring incoming audio with AGC activated, but the output file is full of digital squealing and other sounds. Ugly.

Well it does just what it says. You just have to decide what you need. Turns out I needed something more professional. This is basically a glorified adapter. The display screen is useless along with headphone monitoring. I wouldn't call this a professional device, but if you just need an adapter for a powered mic than this will work.

Comments about Beachtek DXA-5DA DSLR Cameras Passive Dual XLR Mic Adapter:
I've used the Beachtek with some interviews lately and it works great! Such a life saver. I previously owned the Zoom H4n, but didn't like the hassle of syncing up the audio and jumbling between multiple pieces of equipment. The Beachtek sits right under your camera, you can monitor your audio, and it delivers great sound. There is still a tiny bit of hiss, but it's nothing you can't tweak a little bit in the editing, and to be honest, it isn't too noticeable. The monitoring of the audio isn't completely accurate to the sound you are recording, so just do tests to make sure you know what your results will be. But, if you are somebody that can't afford to hire a good sound person or your own sound equipment and want to make your DSLR setup work up to par with video cameras, the Beachtek is the perfect option.

Attaches fast and firm to the bottom of my Nikon D7000 whether I have the battery grip mounted or not. Allows me to connect a professional microphone via boompole with a 15 foot XLR cable to get GREAT sound during shooting narrative films. With the 1080p 24 fps HD video from the Nikon D7000 this adds pro audio to the mix and makes your projects that much better. Of course, you'll still need to know Pro Tools ( or other proper post audio software) to tweak your audio in post for the perfect mix. Works great attached to a Redrock Micro shoulderMount as well.

It's very easy to use and very stable. Makes the camera feel more stable--acts like a balancer, much like what a battery grip does. The controls are very well placed, it's so basic, you can use it without reading the manual.
Maybe I wished there was a way to preview/listen to recorded sound through headphones but i guess it's also the limitation of my camera (Canon 60D).

Comments about Beachtek DXA-5DA DSLR Cameras Passive Dual XLR Mic Adapter:
This is a very nicely built unit. The plugs are secure and in good locations. The knobs are robust and have a nice feel. The option to output mono, dual mono or stereo is nice. The unit fits nicely on my DSLR video rig, as well as the bottom of my DSLR.
The only issue is the fact that the meter is basically useless when using a passive mic source. If you aren't inputing from a very hot, powered mic or an amp, you will not get any level reading on the display. This is covered in the manual, but was not expected with my limited knowledge of audio components. Actual recording levels are fine.

Combined with Sennheiser 100 P-Series, allows me to monitor and control the 2 Rx with either Camera and DSLR
The only cons I can see is the battery clamp door, a sliding door would be easier to use. The screw wheel for DSLR is a bit small.

Well, we have been using the canon 5d for about 6 months, when we attached the beachtek inorder to connect our mics to it. After recording and uploading it to our computer for video editing. The sound quality was very good, almost close to 0db when silence. Highly recommend this product, plus it make your camera look more professional.

I think the price of this item is a little high but in the professional world it's nothing. The weight of it is extremely light weight, a little bulky but it does fit right onto the bottom of a dslr very nicely. It plugs right into the audio in on your canon dslr which is a very nice option to have. The 5da compared to the 5d version is a lot cleaner audio they completely got rid of the buzz. I wouldn't say the build of it is the best, but if you take good care of your products you should be fine.

This is the way to get audio done with a DSLR camera. It works great on my 7D with consistent output while eliminating noise with its AGC decibel. It also give a slight counter weight and chunkyness to the DSLR rig, making hand held work a little more stable.
