What captured my attention to this camera had been the huge zoom in such a tiny frame (lens excepted, just a little bigger than my Canon 210IS), a singular achievement (even the recent issued Canon SX30 is bulkier and much heavier (601g vs 416g)).
Testing it I've discovered other qualities but also drawbacks. The zoom was rewarding, but of course some rules had to be obeyed at its maximum. The Fine Zoom gives you a plus in performance at the price of the image size (8M maximum). I liked the menu also (mainly the classical selection disk transfered within the display). I'd liked to mention some other nice features (photo "paraphernalia" if you wish) like the auto-mode panorama and the drawing mode.
At the beginning I've been rather upset by the absence of the manual mode (the lack of the viewfinder had not been a problem for me); then I've discovered I could emulate the desired configurations by the settings in the menu, admittedly a more complicated way.
When shooting movies you have to decide if you want to use the optical zoom variation and no sound recording, or to choose the sound and the digital zoom variation only. I think this is because the zooming in being rather noisy.
As drawbacks besides the ones in the list I'd like to mention the battery charging through the camera, so blocking any activity during the action. I'm advising for a spare and a charger.
All in all I believe it is an interesting and rewarding camera, but don't buy it if you're not ready to make some effort to learn a new operating way.

I bought the Olympus SP-800UZ camera for a friend for the 30X zoom to 840 to photograph birds Compared to her Kodak camera, Z980, 24X, to 624 zoom, the results were disappointing. Also the camera did NOT come with a manual. You are to download it to your computer. Not a good place when you are in the field and need to look at your book. Olympus will charge you $10.00 for a manual. Also the display on the back of the camera is hard to see in bright sunlight. The battery life is also very short. If you purchase this camera, be sure to buy extra batteries. For normal snapshots this is a good camera, but not for the extended zoom.

I use this camera for my photography business. I downloaded manual and also bought a copy to read so I had an idea how the camera worked. Because of an accident where I broke the camera, I have just replaced it with the same model. I have gotten beautiful pictures from this camera. I find it easy to use, and not too heavy. I prefer to use the screen on the back, so not having a view finder doesn't bother me. I agree that the battery life is short; therefore I have several replacements and a charger. I carry the camera with me everywhere.

This is the only camera I seen with a Tele Micro capability. When taking small and fast butterflies, 840mm micro option is the best. I have taken about more than 3800 photos with this, and it's still perfect. This also has a supper micro and normal micro options. Perfect camera for Micro photography.

I am a professional videographer and I bought this camera as a present for my wife who wanted to learn photography. It is 14mp, fully auto or fully manual operations. Great zoom lens. I ended up using to shoot the cover photo for our local phone book and pictures included in the Yosemite Visitors Guide. Looks as good as a $2,000 camera if you know what you're doing. My wife is learning.

I use my SP-800UZ for family and personal activities.
The best thing is that it is very easy to use. I am still learning how to change settings. The Macro option is GREAT. Same thing with Zoom feature. The video option seems to be good, but as I said before, I am still discovering its goodies.
The only thing I don't like is that the manual is not printed, so you need a PC or laptop to be able to read about the usage of this great camera.
I am very happy with it and every day I use it, I like it best.

I'm a college student that just wanted to take pictures of friends and family. I bought this camera to use this summer for a backpacking trip through Europe. It has a lot of features, but they are a little complicated to learn. I find it most difficult to chose the correct setting in the right moment. But over all a great camera. When I bought the camera I didn't realize that there was not view finders. This was a little disappointing, but if you don't need one then its great! Also when recording on the video setting you can't zoom in and out while recording.

Comments about Olympus SP-800UZ Digital Camera:
It's taking some time to get used to this camera but the more I use it and educate myself on the settings which work for me the better results I'm getting. I've been a long time user of another brand of cameras and I wanted a zoom to take on a trip in a few weeks. I did get the zoom from the other brand and took photos as a test. It failed and exhibited too much chromatic aberration to consider keeping. I got the Olympus SP-800UZ with a similar zoom and went back to the same spots and took the same photos and inspected them. The results were much better. It's keeper.
I like the zoom and I'm playing with the various settings on the camera which are fun. I use Magic and then the Pop setting. It knocks the color out of the park. The auto panorama is really cool. I take the first photo and then line up the dot and the camera fires automatically for two more shots and puts them together in the camera. I never liked panoramas because they were too much trouble to do in graphic programs.
The camera is not a DSLR and the results probably can't compete but the photos are excellent and the color is too. It is interesting to me that when the shots are enlarged to the extreme in iPhoto the results look more like film than what I'm used to seeing with the other brand. I've been busy taking photos and so far I'm very pleased with what I'm getting from this Olympus.

I've only had SP-800UZ for two weeks. No problems setting up or installing software. Everything has worked correctly as stated. I was concerned about the panoramic photo function because of another review, but it worked great. I plan on using the camera on a trip to Alaska and wanted the long zoom.

I bought the Sp-800UZ because of the excellent ratings by several digital review sources. I'd been wanting an intermediate sized digital as I have been using DSLR's for several years. This Olympus was not so small that I wasn't able to handle & manuever it.

This is my third Olympus camera in this line that I have purchased over the past 7 years. I am an avid amateur photographer and use this camera when I don't want to carry my Canon DSLR. The picture quality is exceptional for a point and shoot and often is close to the quality of my DSLR.

This camera has great and fun features. One that's really cool is the ability to take pictures as a line drawing, so that you can make everything into a sketch. The controls are the usual Olympus easy-to-understand, easy-to-use.

Comments about Olympus SP-800UZ Digital Camera:
This is the camera I was looking for before I got my Olympus 510UZ. I love taking pictures of my animals and wildlife and the outdoors in general. As a casual phographer/photo enthusiast, I love the features it posesses to play around with getting those unique shots. While I still don't know everything it is capable of, I do like what I have experienced so far. The only cons I have is the noise factor, when I click a picture, the deer can hear it too. Also in low light or indoors, I almost always have to use the flash. Don't with my other camera. :)
