The Nikon CoolPix P100 combines high-speed shooting capability and an enormous focal range in a compact 'bridge-style' digicam. Sporting the low profile of a compact DSLR, the Nikon P100 can knock out up to 10 full-resolution images-per-second of subjects close and far through the P100's fixed 26-678mm equivalent lens. For applications that require even faster capture rates, the P100 can also shoot up to 120 fps at 1.1MP. Basically, if you can see it, you can shoot it.
The P100 utilizes backside illumination technology that enables the camera sensor to capture and display more detail and tone than conventional CMOS sensors. Combined with Nikon's Backlit Scene HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology, the images captured by the diminutively-sized CoolPix P100 will truly blow you away.
Video shooters will appreciate the P100's ability to capture dynamic 1080p HD video at 30 fps complete with stereo sound and HDMI output.
Other features found in the CoolPix P100 include - in addition to its optical viewfinder - a bright 3" (460,000-dot) LCD, a 5-Way VR image stabilization system for maintaining sharp pictures under the lowest of lighting conditions, and ISO sensitivities up to 3200. The P100 also features Nikon's Smart Portrait System, which makes easy work out of taking flattering portraits, along with a host of in-camera shooting modes and retouching tools. And, for macro aficionados, the Nikon CoolPix P100 can focus down to 0.4".

I'm an old car enthusiast and old car club member, and use my digital camera most of time to cover/register events and parties we promote and participate.
I considered to buy a Sony DSC-HX1 for a very long time, and changed my mind when I used a friend's Coolpix P100 for the first time. The LCD display is extremely sharp and produces clear, bright and vivid images, even in sunny outdoor places - on the other hand, Nikon electronic viewfinder is 'so-so', specially when compared with DSC-HX1's one; its images appears like interpolated, unfocused (even adjusting diopter), a little awkward. Nikkor lens are slightly superior when compared with Sony G Lens, and offers a little extra zoom. Controls are handy and very intuitive.
Coolpix P100 has great scene modes! I tested night shots, twilight, museum mode and all of them played well. The great news for me was the night shots, because we promote regularly old-car events at night and our pictures, made with other cameras, were always poor, blurred and grainy - except using tripods, which is not the case. I've made great photos at night using just built-in flash, without using tripod and other special accessories. This is VERY important for me, because I don't want to carry lots of bulky things for events and parties just to take some good night pictures - remember that I'm carrying me-myself, my wife, lots of beer, some camping facilities and luggage on a fantastic VW Beetle 1986, which definitely doesn't have extra room for tripods, extra lenses and flashes, etc... :)
I was even more impressed with video quality. This camera is capable of capturing Full HD (1920 x 1080) movies, HDMI ready-to-go. Carrying only one lightweight camera, I can make a high quality full coverage of an event, with pictures and videos, and bring it to DVDs, BDs or web. DSC-HX1 unfortunately doesn't capture widescreen movies, and that was the point that changed my mind to buy this Nikon.
However, Coolpix P100 has some handicaps when compared with Sony's opponent: panorama assist, included with Nikon, is computer-dependant and hard to use - you have to be a good puzzle player to get the exact point where you need to capture the next part; good panoramas can be obtained with pacience and a good tripod. Sony's 'sweep panorama' is a bless compared with Nikon's. Slideshows produced by Nikon doesn't have the soundtrack option - if you want to play some pics to friends and/or family on your TV, don't forget to carry a sound player, otherwise it will play in silence (Sony does it with built-in soundtracks perfectly).
So, if you want a great digital camera, capable of taking GREAT pictures, a magnificent zoom, don't want bulky DSLR on your luggage and have a Full HD good camcorder in the same package, for a fair price, you can have Coolpix P100. However, if you need to take panorama pictures, want a sharp and clear viewfinder, multimedia built-in presentations, don't want to capture movies and like Sony's XMB interface, buy Sony and be happy!
TIP: consider buying and extra battery, it runs flat after 250/300 shots, and drains hardly whem capturing movies. SDHC Class-10 or above are very welcome to capture Full HD Movies (Transcend recommended). Oh, and a HDMI cable, incredibly not included with the camera...

This is my first point and shoot cam. Bought it for my wife but I use it when I don't want to bring out the D200 bodies. I don't like the Zoom: there's not much control. It zooms too fast and doesn't stop immediately where you want it to stop. Barely pressing the zoom I can go probably from 35 to 100mm. It's very challenging to get an in between focal length. Focus is another issue in video mode. Focus is all over the place except when you are at full wide angle. Zooming in and the focusing is more difficult except in ver well lit conditions.

This is a great camera if you are not happy with the quality you get from a small point and shoot but will never have a use for a SLR. This thing has great optical zoom and the pictures are fantastic. Honestly in the few weeks we have had it I have yet to take it off of auto and am snapping better photo's than I ever have. I am not a professional just a family man who wants to document his daughters life with photo's that are actually usable. Two big thumbs up!

The product felt cheap.
And I did not like the focus mechanism...kind of small knob and it seemed to struggle to find the target at times.

My main camera is a D90, and still is when I'm looking for best quality. But, so far I find the CoolPix P100 a respectable sidekick, or, for more casual usage. It does tout full HD video capability which I haven't used yet (would likely work well using a 32GB card or larger). But, as far as standard camera use it is quite compact and versatile. It does provide more controls and delivers more performance than the typical pocket PAS. My only one dislike is that you have to recharge the battery in the camera. I would prefer an external arrangement. In general, you get better low light, zoom, macro, speed, and image quality performance than with a typical PAS. I do like the eye viewer with built-in diopter adjustment.

Purchased to replace my Canon S3 IS. Needed longer lens. It has the required (by me) tilt LCD, interval timer and a couple other musties. I'm a bird and other wild animal shooter. The lens is perfect for that. Overall, quite satisfied.

Comments about Nikon CoolPix P100 Digital Camera (Black):
We recently purchased the Nikon CoolPix P100. It is a great digital camera. This model takes exceptional photos and has a vast array of features. It is very user friendly for a novice photographer like myself. It has a nice compact body that isn't too heavy. It also has a good size LCD and takes HD video. The video time is very short though. I found the image stabilization to be good, but not great. It performs well in low light, but make sure to use the flash. The zoom and focus features are fantastic.
On another note, the camera is slow to startup and has a longer lag time in between photos than we would like. In addition, to conserve the battery the camera goes into sleep. We liked this feature, but it would go into sleep mode far too often which we found to be inconvenient. Due to the longer lag/shutter delay, it was more challenging to take action photos. A sports feature is offered, but we didn't find it to be very helpful. We missed a great deal of key action shots due to this. In addition, the battery life is not very long.
We will still upgrade to a faster and professional DSLR camera and use this as our second camera. Overall, this is an exceptional camera and would reccommend it to future buyers.

I take photos both for showing my product on the internet (they need to be excellent quality) and for reference (just enough to jog my memory).
I love the fact that I can leave this camera on auto-focus for the reference photos (I take far more of them) and then override the auto-focus when I need top quality. Truth to tell, there are enough auto-focus modes that I really don't need to do much but select the appropriate mode.

Bought this hoping it would be better than a typical P&S camera. It is loaded with features and has great zoom. I did find the pictures weren't as great as I hoped. It does struggle with sharpness in low light and maxed out zoom. Nice little camera though for just quick shots or video. Will be a nice camera to have handy when I don't want to carry the DSLR.

This camera replaced my Nikon P80. I was surprised when I got the P100 and found out IT HAS INTERVAL TIMER SHOOTING!! The specs say it does not have this feature. The lens is sharp, the zoom is awesome, the camera is light-weight and very functional. The video feature has 3 slow-motion modes. I videoed the second hand on my watch and saw the second hand move forward every eight seconds of playback! When I am on a pro job I usually use my Nikon D300s, but the camera bag winds up weighing at least 40 pounds with all the lenses and other equipment. The Nikon P100 just fits the bill when I want to travel light.

We were looking for a simple point and shoot to use along side our DSLR and we found the Nikon P100. Not only is the quality of the pics on par with our DSLR it takes great video as well. We have started experimenting with the video and are really liking this all-around, jack-of-all-trades camera.

I was looking for a camera with more features especially zoom and wide angle and easy to carry. Nikon P100 was the best investment I made. I have been using it only fo 2 weeks and already I am familiar with most of the features. This is extremely easy to learn and use and takes excellent clear pictures. I am very impresed.

I purchased the camera to take pictures of my children and family. It was very easy to use; however, I was extremely disappointed in the image quality. The pictures were not crisp but very soft. I would not recommend the camera because of the subpar image quality. It also seemed slow to focus in a lot of instances.

This camera has a 26x optical zoom with a clear crisp picture. Noise reduction is a huge help with motion created by the hands but a tripod is recommended when using the full zoom. The LCD screen moves for taking pictures when you would not normally be able to see what you are shooting. Light weight and small enough to make this camera easy to travel with and get great shots. It's a very fast camera that can take up to 10 frames per second for action shots. It also does HD and regular video with sound.
