My parents presented my daughter with a red Nikon Cool Pix on her birthday two years ago. She loved it and used it a lot.
I take loads of pix myself both for work (I am a journalist working in Mumbai, India for a US-based publication and an international website) and for leisure. And the quality of the pix were so good that I started using it too and dropped it twice rather badly and it broke.
Since its pix were so good and my daughter was sad/mad to lose her camera, I just bought a replacement for the broken camera when I was in New York. I chose the same model, slightly updated. And was quite delighted (my daughter too) to find it in a plum color.
It a very easy camera to handle. My ten year old handles it with ease and uses the video accessory a lot. It is tiny and nifty which makes it convenient to carry even on work because it gives the results you need (although I have a slightly better but bigger camera too).
Most importantly it takes very clear sharp pix. Do go for the model with the rechargeable battery.
Can't think of any drawbacks as such except be careful with it and don't drop it! And take a coverage plan for it.

I have shot Nikon SLR's for over 10 years and have always been very happy as a "Nikon guy". So, when my wife's Fuji P&S bit the dust a year ago, I took a chance and bought the S3000 at Best Buy without doing my usual exhaustive research online. Boy, was it a mistake. At first glance, this thing is pretty sweet: big LCD, compact form factor, giant resolution, great optical zoom, and easy-to-use controls. The honeymoon ended very quickly, though, as the questionable, plastic-y build quality really started to shine through. Within days of purchasing the camera, the lens-cover louvers had already started sticking (both on opening and closing). It also became apparent right away that the battery life was very poor, and there were several situations where we got the "battery exhausted" in the middle of a photo-worthy situation, within minutes after seeing a battery life indicator at half charge or more. So, I realize that this is a [$] camera, so my expectations could be a bit high in terms of build quality. Fine. All I've said above could be overlooked if the image quality was decent, but I'm sad to say that it is terrible! The molasses-slow auto-focus chooses the wrong subject the majority of the time resulting in soft images. The low-light capability is awful -- you basically will either have blown-out over-flashed images, or (if you turn off the flash) fuzzy, jpeg-artifacted, dark, obviously hand-held images. I'm not sure if the CCD is too small or of too low quality, but I was never able to take a relatively-high ISO shot that I would have even posted to facebook. The bottom line is that we have permanently retired this camera and bought a Canon Powershot S95 that we are absolutely over-the-moon about. It's incredible, and our only regret is that we can't go back in time to retake all those terrible S3000 photos from our trips with our new Canon. We would gladly pay the extra $200 just to have had the Canon on those couple of trips.

Used this to take vacation pictures. High quality shots and easy to figure out how to use right out of the box for basic pictures. Nice small size and color choices. Also nice to find a camera with video for this price. I wish the battery could be taken out and charged separately from the camera, but that's a minor preference. Overall very happy with this.

I purchased this camera for my teen kids and for my 70 year old mother. What I like most about it is the thoughtfully laid out menu and button structure, making it easy to make common adjustments like exposure, white balance and flash control. It is very slim and very light, making it easy to carry anywhere, which the kids like. The image quality is pretty good for this price range and it has macro capability down to three inches.

Very handy starter camera. Simple and straight forward to use and great picture quality at 12MP. Only short coming is that it is small and if one does not have steady hands, picture may become blurred.

Ordered this camera for my daughter for Christmas. Beautiful color choices, 12 mega pixels, and the options to shoot in B&W and sepia tone (her special requirement/request). I love the included rechargeable lithium-ion battery and quick charging. Now I'm thinking of buying one for myself!

I love the compactness of this little gem of a camera. So easy to operate, a person like myself, who is not very camera savy, takes great photos with lots of confidence in the results. Love it!

I wanted a camera that I could easily carry with me on outings such as hikes, field trips, kid's activities, etc. I also wanted to have pictures worthy of remembering these events (e.g. better than a cell phone camera). This fits all of these requirements. Although I haven't learned all of the features yet, I was able to change several settings without having to refer to the user's manual; a definite plus in my book! I love the color and how lightweight it is. This isn't a professional camera, but it has a decent zoom and has all it needs to take good pictures anywhere you go (well, maybe not underwater...). I have had some pictures turning out blurry, but that may be due to a lack of proper focus or too much hand movement - only time will tell if this is a camera issue.

Purchased as a gift for my mother who in the past enjoyed trying out my digital cameras. In comparison to some of the other point and shoots, it shoots well in low light, does a good job of picking out autofocus points. Easy to navigate menus. The design is well done, slim and great for my mom who likes having it on the go.
Good camera for folks looking in the price range.
