The Sony DVP-FX950 9" Portable DVD Player is a perfectly affordable portable widescreen DVD player you can use around the house, on the road and outdoors.
Its screen can flip and swivel 180 degrees so you have plenty of flexibility whenever you set up your FX950. It even has two remote control sensors so you'll be able to take aim at one no matter what your setup. When you're playing outdoors you'll appreciate the FX950's seven-hour battery life. You can watch two full length movies without recharging.
Wherever you use it you'll also appreciate the wide variety of DVD and CD formats it can play. You can even view JPEG pictures and listen to MP3 files from disc and USB memory devices. And you can enjoy your entertainment with a friend without disturbing others with the two built-in headphone jacks. (Headphones sold separately.)
When you take it on the road, don't forget the FX950's included car adapter. With a stack of CDs and DVDs you can keep the kids in the backseat entertained for hours. When you're in more spacious settings you'll find the remote control comes in handy.
A couple of thoughtful touches round out the FX950's conveniences. The FX950 has selectable A/V input/output jacks. Set them to output and you can use you FX950 as a DVD player, enjoying a larger picture on a larger set. Set the jacks to input and you can use your FX950 as a display for a camcorder. And the Disc Resume feature lets you restart a DVD where you left off.

I have been looking for a portable DVD player for a few months. Based on the many reviews out there my choice was either the Sony or the Toshiba. My main reasons for choosing this unit were, the screen (800x480), the USB port, and it was on sale. IMO, the Toshiba looks better but the new model (SDP94S) actually has less resolution than the previous model (SDP93S). If the SDP93S was still available new, then I might have gone for that.
The DVP-FX950 looks really good, it's not that heavy but it's no exactly lightweight either. I like how the top of the player is textured so it does not attract fingerprints or dust and it gives you a nice grip. This unit, unlike previous models, has a USB port which is great for connecting a flash drive or a multi-card reader. The instructions state that you cannot hook up a camera directly to the unit. I would actually be happier with an SD card slot like the Toshiba because it's just so much easier to view pictures with a built in SD slot as opposed to attaching a separate card reader. I have a pro camera which used CF cards but why would I want to view my "good work" on such a tiny screen anyway? My P&S camera is what I use for snapshots, etc. and it uses SD cards (as does most every other P&S camera.) So I think just popping in an SD card and viewing the pictures with the remote is much easier than hooking up a separate card reader. The USB does however give you some more versatility. The screen looks fine. It's reasonably sharp and the colors look good. The screen didn't exactly blow me away but according to other reviews, no other player compares. The exterior touch controls are somewhat of a pain to use as they are very sensitive to touch. I wish they had given a rotary sound dial as that would be a whole lot easier to operate than the touch slider controls. Also push buttons would be a lot more convenient than touch controls. The on-screen menu is also a pain to use because you can't adjust everything while the movie is playing; you have to stop the movie and then adjust some of the settings. The remote is nicer than previous Sony models because it is not flat and cumbersome. It is smaller and more contoured to your hand. Battery life is pretty accurate. You can easily watch two movies on one charge. The speakers, as with most other players, leave something to be desired. They reproduce dialog fine even at moderate volumes but special effects scenes don't sound good at all; they actually sound flat. I personally use these with a pair of Bose Quiet Comforts and the sound is really good even when played loud. Overall build quality is pretty good considering manufacturers are making most portable gear pretty cheap these days. I just play standard DVD's so I don't care that it doesn't play as many different types of files as the Toshiba, notably DivX files. That might be important for you though.
One thing I don't understand about most every portable DVD players these days is that they do not include a custom carrying case. There is no way you can transport this player and it's accessories from your home to your car or to some other place without a case or else you will probably drop or forget something. So now you have to go out and buy some bulky generic case for your player. I've seen some of these generic cases and they are bulky and they don't really look good.
In closing, I have to give this unit 4 stars strictly based on the fact that it has the best screen compared to all other portable DVD players available right now. After all, what is a portable DVD player without a good screen. Be sure to check out the Toshiba as well because you might like that one too.

This has the longest battery life of any portable DVD player I've used, and the picture quality is very good. The menus are pretty standard. The only major flaw is the that the disc spinning is the loudest of any portable I've heard. If you use headphones it's not a big deal, but it's pretty annoying if you are using the built in speakers.

This player has been great for us and for our 3.5 year old. There are no buttons that get pressed accidentally. The controls are all intuitive. The screen size and resolution are great. And it is fairly lightweight. The battery is one of the longer lasting options in this price range, I found.

very easy to use. and can handle the not so delicate hands of a child. my so likes that he has his own computer and can watch when he is needing to blank out. tired time or coming home from an active day. it is small enough that he can hold and carry, etc.being said only draw back is small screen. i also want to mount in car but need to figure that out.i had another one that could not handle kids. very slow to start and any movement it would stop. this one is durable and great picture.[...]

I'll be using the Sony DVP-FX950 as a monitor for video shooting (depositions). It can do double duty for me, for it's intended design as a DVD player, which I'll use for video courtroom playback. Very versatile & a great picture. I also own a Sony DVPFX750, which works well as a player, though it has no AV inputs.

Comments about Sony DVP-FX950 9" Portable DVD Player:
I had this portable DVD player for two weeks. Before I purchased it I checked out other brands and found this to be the best in its price range. The picture quality is excellent the sound is very good. I love the fact that it is easy to carry and I can watch my videos wherever I want. It is durable and the matte surface with ridges is nice so that your fingerprints are not all over it. The controls are mostly easy to use. The only one I find a little hard is the button to turn it on which is on the side. My one concern is the battery life. It is supposed to last for 7.5 hours. So far it hasn't. It is true that I only recharged it twice and the instruction booklet said it might not fill completely the firts two times. So the jury is still out on that. That is why I gave it four stars. Otherwise over all I love it.

This DVD player has awesome resolution and is very well constructed. I watch a lot of videos in bed and I have inadvertently dropped the unit off the bed twice but it keeps on playing. Additionally, the battery charge life is incredible. Although the Sony FX950 is a little more expensive, it is worth the money.

I purchased the Sony DVP-FX950 9 PORTABLE DVD PLAYER as a gift for my best friend. We both were thoroughly pleased with this player. I had bought other players before this one and then ended up sending them back, then going with the Sony player. We just love Sony! We love this player because the screen is big with amazing picture quality, the volume is loud & audible. Also, we can hook up other devices to the player. This is a huge added feature over ALL of the other players that we tried. Sony is always 2 steps ahead of their competition. We would definitely repurchase this item. We use it almost everyday! And the remote is really nice. We have always appreciated Sony for their quality. Keep up the great work.

I liked the great comments about the DVP-FX950
player before I bought it, except one. Some buyers stated that it would not play owner recorded discs.
Since most of my use was be my own recorded discs, I almost didn't buy it. But, found out these statements were wrong. It will play self recorded discs. However, your own disc must be properly finalized before it will work on this player or any other except the one that recorded it.
