The Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS Digital ELPH (Orange) features a high-resolution 14.1MP CCD imaging sensor and an optically stabilized 4x UA (Ultra High Refractive Index Aspherical) zoom lens, which covers an equivalent focal range of 28-112mm without compromising the narrow profile Canon Digital EPLHs are known for. And for composing, reviewing, and editing your photos, the SD1400 IS features a bright 2.7" (230,000-dot) PureColor System LCD.
In addition to a choice of 6 JPEG file sizes (including 16:9) the SD1400 IS can capture HD 720p video clips (with monaural sound) up to 60 minutes (or 4GB per clip) as well as 640x480 @ 30 fps and 320x240 @ 30 fps for lower-resolution applications.
For fuss-free shooting, Canon's Smart AUTO mode automatically analyzes the scene and sets the best exposure based on 22 predefined shooting situations. For shooting under low lighting conditions, the ISO sensitivity of the PowerShot SD1400 IS can be dialed up to 1600, and when shooting in Low Light mode, expanded as high as an equivalent of ISO 6400.
Other image enhancing features found on the Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS include a DIGIC 4 image processor, Intelligent Contrast Correction, Motion Detection Technology, Face Detection Self-Timer, Red-eye Correction, Advanced AF/AE/FE/WB Face Detection, and a Face Detection Self-timer that enables you to get your own happy face into family portraits.
The Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS records images onto your choice of SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card, MultiMediaCard, MMC Plus Card, HC MMC Plus memory cards up to 16GB (not included) and powers off a rechargeable NB-4L lithium-ion battery, which is good for about 230 images-per-charge, or about 6 hours of playback time.
The PowerShot SD1400 IS Digital ELPH is equipped with the acclaimed Canon Optical Image Stabilizer, which automatically detects and corrects camera shake - one of the leading causes of fuzzy or blurred shots. Even when zoomed in, you can get the steady, crisp, brilliant images you'll be proud to shoot and share. And the Canon Optical Image Stabilizer technology is so convenient to use. It functions perfectly with or without a flash.

I bought this in a hurry from B&H. I had sadly lost my beautiful SD1000 and was going on vacation in a few days. Now back, I have to say that I'm thrilled with the camera.
The SD1400 is incredibly small given that it's a 14MP point-and-shoot that can also take HDMI-quality video footage. If you're used to the forward-backward style zoom on earlier models (like the SD1000) the left-right zoom button can take a little getting used to, but once you've mastered that, it's simple to use. I love the various presets the camera offers (e.g. nighttime) but to be honest the automatic mode was ideal in nearly all circumstances. I was impressed when it would swiftly switch to the "sunset" settings when I pointed the camera at an actual sunset! I also used it for landscape shots, closeup portraits, night shots and wildlife shots. In every case the images were crisp and beautiful, with just the right level of colour saturation. The Macro function is also excellent. I got super-crisp images of small flowers just a few inches away. One other thing, the focus-speed is incredibly fast. Older Canons have sometimes been a bit on the slow side, but the SD1400 delivers.
Other pros? The battery life is excellent - I used it for days (although not continuously) before I had to recharge. I also really like the orange colour. I'm used to silver or black, but the orange is very elegant, and it makes it easy to find in a bag or case. I used the HDMI video mode just a few times, and the quality is outstanding. I'm truly impressed.
There are very few cons. If using automatic mode in low-light(e.g. at dusk) the SD1400 can be a little slow switching from a long-distance sunset shot to a lower-light closeup portrait shot. I found that I sometimes had to allow a few seconds to for it to adjust the light settings. I also wouldn't have minded a viewfinder for very bright situations (where it's hard to see the LCD screen) but that is a minor complaint.
Overall this is an excellent camera, and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a decent but compact point-and-shoot.

I had a Canon PowerShot SD600 that was over 4 years old by the time I bought this SD1400 and I was sick of it and looking forward to a snazzy new point & shoot. But I'm not that happy with the shots the SD1400 takes - it seems slow on shutter time and shots often come out blurry. The menu/options were easier to navigate on my SD600 too - I don't like having to go through several steps to see the different shooting options (portrait, landscape, etc). I mostly use this for snapshots of my kids. They're always on the move and I feel like I'm not getting the shots I want with this camera. Maybe I just need some more practice with it but I've been turning to my DSLR more often lately than this point & shoot. I do like its size - it's small and sleek - easy to pop in a pocket. The display is great - big and clear, and I like the HD video option. Overall, an okay camera but it makes me miss my old one.

Old school amateur finally moving to digital. Besides auto features, has options for manual settings and overides. Love the sleek exterior, recessed buttons, and orange color. Will use the "Smart Auto" most of the time but eventually plan to fool with manual-ish options. Pictures seem good but this my first digital. Menus easy to follow even for idiot/dinosaur like me. LCD screen is surely not the biggest but is as big as it can be on a compacto size camera. HDMI direct connect to HDTV would not work. Attempted on two TVs. Not sure if fault of cable or camera. Easy to slip from hand, ALWAYS use the wrist strap!!

The Elph is really easy to use. Having used Canon digitals all my life, it was very easy to figure out and the clarity is amazing. Focused shots are really crisp and bring out the details.
I use my Elph for work, photographing events and the speed is pretty good for a point and shoot digi.
It's also super-slim and compact (even smaller than I had thought!) and light. Comes with a battery charger- so no more disposables!
The only thing I didnt realize is that it doesn't come equipped with a memory card- luckily I had one- So, make sure to factor that in!

This camera is awesome, love the orange color! Very easy to use on auto shoot and that is what I wanted. I took it to an NFL football game and was amazed at the zoom I got on my pictures. It is the perfect size for a pocket and so easy to carry.

This is a great camera for the average person. I am not a professional but I get great pictures with this! Love the orange color too! It has lots of options for some fun and unique pics. This replaced an Olympus camera I'd had for several years that was starting to take blurry pictures. These have all been crystal clear. LOVE IT! And as for B&H, I would do business with them again in a heartbeat! Positive experience all around! I am a happy camper!

Great device! I just use it for catch special moments and I have to say that the quality of the photos are excellent. It has a nice wide angle and a very nice zoom too. The only thing that could be criticized about this camera is that it doesn't have many option in the menu for different types of (close/close and far/far subjects). However, I totally recommend this camera.

I am an artist and keep this with me when plein air painting. It can freeze the moment in time, which I can review when I return to the studio. Most of my work is done on site, but this allows me to dot the "i's" and cross the "t's" if needed.[...] I look forward to purchasing a new Nikon changeable lens camera when I have rallied up the funds. Thank you for an outstanding way of doing business!Sandi CMEsa, AZ

Comments about Canon PowerShot SD1400 IS Digital ELPH (Orange):
I used to be a pretty good photographer back in the days of 35 mm film (I had a nice Nikon and did my own film processing). However, I've gotten too busy with other things to be that serious about photography, and now I just take snapshots to share with friends and family. What I want a digital camera to be is small, robust, and easy to use. Of course, I also want great pictures. This camera satisfies all of these needs. If you buy this camera, you will also need to purchase a memory card (it doesn't come with one). I bought an 8 GB card (Transcend Class 6 SDHC), which is definitely overkill for my needs. For most people, 2 GB is more than enough. I also bought a small case that I like a lot and that fits the camera very well (Caselogic TBC-302 Ultra Compact). I haven't had the camera very long, but I like what I've seen so far and look forward to many great pictures over the next several years.

Great camera for on the go. Simple to use. I purchased this for my 12 year old daughter and she began using it right away. Beautiful clear pictures with lots of detail. Awesome camera for the price.I did find the zoom a little awkward as it is on the top center of the camera instead of near the shooting button. I would still purchase!

I have only had the camera for about a week and so far it works really well. I especially love the orange color. I'm looking forward to playing around with the settings some more so I can really get some great pictures. Overall, I'm happy to know that any pictures I take can actually be blown up to a large size and framed, which will come in handy when I travel again.
