Canon's VIXIA HF21 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder provides you with 24 hours of true 1920 x 1080 HD recording to its 64GB internal memory along with the option to record extra footage to SDHC memory cards. The camera captures clean, clear video and 3.3MP digital stills thanks to the 3.89MP CMOS sensor and the DIGIC DV III Image Processor, while the 2.7" Multi-Angle Widescreen LCD, Dynamic SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer and 15x HD Video Lens also enhance your video making endeavors.
For those looking to capture video with a film-look, the camera offers the 24p Cinema Mode and 30p Progressive Mode for action or sports footage. In addition, higher quality audio can be captured by utilizing the external microphone terminal and the Mini Advanced Accessory shoe for attaching microphones and lights. A headphone terminal is attached as well for controlling audio levels and listening to closely upon playback.
When it comes to other features that enhance your video and still images the camera provides you with Dynamic SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization, an Auto Exposure System, Face Detection, and Advanced Video Snapshot Mode. Additional features include an HDMI terminal for one cable sharing on your HDTV, Canon's Pixela ImageMixer 3SE software, and a wireless remote control, along with many other bells and whistles for the serious shooter.
The advantages of flash memory go beyond the added recording time. You'll also appreciate the quick response time, because it doesn't have to wait for moving parts. Press the record button and your VIXIA HF21 starts recording video faster than you've ever seen before. In addition, when you review your footage, it will come up more quickly
While we certainly hope you keep your VIXIA HF21 securely in your hand while shooting, if it happens to slip, or you accidentally knock it against something, you'll be happy to know that flash memory makes your camcorder more shock-resistant than other recording storage systems. It also minimizes the chance of data loss due to damage to your recording media or to the moving parts found in other camcorders
Super Spectra Coating technology results in images with minimal flare and ghosting. Plus, the lens' aspheric design reduces aberration and increases resolution, ensuring crisp, sharp video - enhancing the HD image quality. As well, a gradation neutral density (ND) system gives you better exposures in bright shooting situations
High color resolution and advanced color reproduction is provided by the VIXIA HF21's sophisticated CMOS image sensor. It is also unique in featuring Canon's proprietary noise reduction technologies for crisp, sharp images. Low noise technology also means that even in dimly lit scenes, the signal from each pixel is as pure as possible, with minimal noise or other aberrations
The VIXIA HF21 uses an RGB Primary Color Filter with Bayer Placement Pattern that separates light into red, green and blue color components. This results in vibrant images with deep, rich, accurate color and natural-looking tones similar to what you'd obtain from 3CCD camcorders. As an added benefit, the CMOS sensor provides outstanding image capture in low light conditions
Plus, the Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processor allows continuous shooting of digital photos with the VIXIA HF21. You can also enjoy faster processing of your images to your memory card (1.4x normal card; 2.5x Hi-Speed card). In addition it helps lower power consumption for longer battery life
In addition, optical image stabilization keeps your shot steady without a loss in image quality - something that can't be said for electronic image stabilization. And image stabilization isn't just for video; you can even use it for taking sharper, clearer digital photographs with your VIXIA HF21. Thanks to Canon's expertise, it's easy to eliminate one of the telltale signs of amateur video and photography
And because a properly focused subject is more critical than ever with HD, the VIXIA HF21 also features Focus Assist. This helps in capturing your subject in razor-sharp focus. It works by providing a 2x magnification of your subject (when you start recording, this assistance is automatically cancelled). This is a feature normally found in professional broadcast-quality cameras
The system is in fact so intelligent that it will recognize faces that are turned downwards or sideways. In addition, a specific face may be selected as the main subject for continuous tracking. This feature can be used to search for clips featuring that specific subject's face. In search and playback, use of the Face Index will display frames with the chosen face as a thumbnail in each shot in which it appears. The selected face can be linked as a timeline to further identify footage containing that subject
You would normally have to look to professional video cameras in order to have this sophisticated tool at your command. In addition to the standard interlaced video frame rate of 60i, you may choose to set the VIXIA HF21 to capture video in 30p, (30 progressive frames, recorded to 60i) which is particularly useful for footage to be used on the Internet. In addition, this setting gives enhanced quality to still images captured after recording. It's also excellent for action shots and sports
The result will be night scenes with the visual accuracy, depth and clarity you expect from a Canon camcorder
Adding to the usefulness of the WP-V1 Waterproof Case is the Surface Mode setting of the VIXIA HF21. To compensate for the color shift which occurs when shooting underwater, the VIXIA HF21 adjusts the white balance setting when in Underwater Mode. When you return to the surface of the water, a switch to Surface Mode brings the white balance back to that normally used when shooting in sunlight - without the need to remove the VIXIA HF21 from the WP-V1 Waterproof Case. You can chase your marine subject from the depths to the light, all the while capturing the most natural color possible
Variable Zoom Speed Control
Level and Grid Markers
The VIXIA HF21's Grid Marker feature lets you compose your shot accurately, according to the grid in your viewfinder. You can even choose from two different colors for the grid. This ensures that you see the grid, no matter what the background color of your shot is

Simply slip the RA-V1 into the Mini Advanced Accessory Shoe on top of the VIXIA HF21 and you'll have a LANC terminal to which you can connect an optional wired remote controller, such as the Canon ZR-1000, ZR-2000 or third-party device
Through the Canon ZR-1000 and ZR-2000, a wide range of functions on the VIXIA HF21 can be controlled:
ZR-100
ZR-200
The same Canon exclusive CMOS image sensor that ensures sharp, vivid HD video also gives you brilliant digital photographs. Like the CMOS image sensors in Canon's EOS Series digital SLR cameras, the VIXIA HF21's image sensor results in outstanding digital photographs. It gives a resolution of 3.3 Megapixels for sharp, crisp still images
Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processor
Focus Features
Auto Exposure Modes
Program AE Mode
Portrait mode ensures shallow depth of field for a pleasing background in your shots of friends and family. Sports mode stops the action with faster shutter speeds. Low Light Mode is designed to give you great shots after the sun goes down. Snow and Beach modes compensate for bright surroundings and give you the proper exposure on your subject. Sunset mode results in vibrant, well-exposed colors for one of the toughest subjects to capture properly. Use Spotlight mode when your child is on stage and in the spotlight - literally - and you want to make sure the exposure is right for them. Fireworks mode records brilliant images of another tough subject - the holiday fireworks display. Night Scene Mode reduces video "noise" and helps to prevent overexposure of artificial lighting from buildings and streetlamps while shooting outdoors in the dark.
To compensate for the color shift which occurs when shooting underwater when using the optional Canon WP-V1 Waterproof Case, the VIXIA HF21 adjusts the white balance setting when in Underwater Mode. Surface Mode re-adjusts the white balance setting to that normally used in sunlight, after the VIXIA HF21 has been shooting in Underwater Mode

This software will also assist you in converting video to the optimum resolution for transmission over the Internet
With the Pixela ImageMixer 3SE Disc, you can burn your edited video onto Blu-ray disc, AVCHD DVDs, (which play in AVCHD compatible Blu-ray disc players), or onto Standard Definition DVDs. And to complement the VIXIA HF21's Advanced Video Snapshot feature, a music CD containing royalty-free soundtracks is also provided

I am a TV News photographer and I have been looking for a camera to shoot with at home for family events. This camera meets and exceeds my needs. Although I am quite capable of adjusting iris, audio levels, and keeping my shot in focus, and doing all of these at virtually the same time with my SONY SX camera, this camera more or less takes care of it for you. Although there are draw backs from shooting in all auto settings this is a good camera. It beats a lot of other cameras with the amount of built in memory. A lot of people complain the camera is "poor in low light." My professional 30k camera often does not look good in low light. That is why I light an interview or move a subject to a better lit area. I think any camera is going to struggle in low light and this camera does just fine. It is a great HD camera for the money.

I'm an amateur film maker, and I upgrade from a standard def Sony Handycam to this. A great decision. The price is great and it came in excellent condition. I also have a HV30 and this tops it by far. Definitely recommendable. Great camera for any level.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF21 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder:
Bought this as a second camera to use alongside a similar, but slightly higher-end camera from the same manufacturer, as they have the same lens/sensor set. The footage matches quite well, no colour correction needed. The camera is OK feature-wise, and I like the rear position of the audio jacks - they don't get in the way like on my other camera. The internal storage is large enough for my purposes, though it is somewhat slow when copying to computer. The included remote works well, but is a bit short-range. Powered image stabilization would have been nice, as the "Dynamic IS" provided doesn't do that much. This was used for filming a stage production that was put online and on DVD - the footage that came out of it was good for both purposes, and holds up at its native 1080p30 as well. The interface is a tad hard to use, for some operations.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF21 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder:
As a professional event videographer where everything I shoot is pretty much uncontrolled and can only happen one time, I bought this camera mainly for emergency backup in case everything else fail; and secondly as a handy travel companion on vacations.
I am particularly impressed with the camera's image stabilizer. Even at full zoom, so long as the shooter is not moving, the image remain steady. The battery supplied with the camera does not last very long. Having a spare high capacity battery like the Canon BP-827 can extend the shooting time considerably.
Overall, I would recommend this product to anybody.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF21 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder:
I'm really happy with the device (have had it for about a month): I'm getting satisfactory results indoors and great one outdoors. I love the zoom, the stability of the picture. The built-in memory is great.
Only downside is that my main computer is not powerful to even play the videos: it's a core2 duo 1.86GHz. So you would need something more recent if you want to edit movies. But I found that using youtube (and Google computing power) works well enough for me.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF21 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder:
For this product's small size, it packs a punch! The image looks great, small size makes it ideal for hand held shooting, has mic and headphone inputs, and it's compatible with final cut. I wish it had better image quality in low light but the HD censor is ok given the economic cost. I Really like the 64GB Dual Flash Memory, allows me to record to the hard drive and in case I didn't back up my footage I can use SD cards (recommend using Class 6 SDHC Cards or higher). The mini shoe mount is pointless. Wish the battery lifewas longer. I don't like having a dirty LCD screen so love that it's not a touch screen and it's easy to use, too bad it is now discontinued.

I purchased this camera for Live Streaming. I connect the A/V out to a Pinnacle convertor box then to my PC. Works great! I can set the zoom speed to slow so my technicians aren't doing crazy fast in and out zooms. I'm very happy with this camcorder!

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF21 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder:
I am a small time videographer ([@]) and I had to settle for a low end camera for a couple of years. This Canon came my way and I snatched it up. Great deal. LOVE the quality, the options are awesome, and the manual controls are easy to get to. Short of 3 CMOS this is as close to pro as you can get. The color quality is more than expected. I have really been more than pleased with all the extras and options. Perfect price, perfect deal.I use this for weddings, auctions and docudramas. It has two minor fall backs, but for the price these are nothing to complain about, and one would need to take the leap to pro to overcome these.Image Stabilization in 24fps is a nightmare. The camera attempts to "lock" on the closest target. If it is turned off while in 24fps you should keep it on a tripod. But the use for 24fps will be far and few so it is nothing to bash about. The second it is grainy in low light. If the 0.3 lux is correct I would like to see the footage. But it does have a back light so no gripes there either.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF21 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder:
I purchased my first camcorder which was a Sony in 1989 and have total of 150 hours of family videos. After ten years of use it died on me so I purchased another Sony (Digital 8MM Tape) and still have them after 12+ years. However, I wanted to upgrade to High Definition, was getting tired of buying 8MM tapes and was little embarassed to carry around such a huge camcorder. So after another 150 hours of famiy videos, I finally decided to purchase Canon HF 21 instead of Sony. I guess many years have passed and I just thought that I try Canon instead of Sony. The first thing that I've noticed was it was very compact, light weight, but suprisingly well made and not flimsy. In regards to the menu, it's very intutitive and takes high quality videos. Of course, it's better than my Sony at low light, but I expected a better video quality in this environment. In addition, I kind of wish the resolution was higher for still pictures at only 3 MP, but overall this is a great camera. My advice when purchasing a camcorder is to always buy an extra long lasting battery from the original manufacturer. Please note that it doesn't come with an HDMI cable either. Eventually, I am going to purchase another 64GB of external memory when price drops. I expect to use this camera for at least a decade.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF21 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder:
I use this camera just for about everything. From family videos for the kids birthdays and vacations to my storm chasing in the spring and summer. This camera is very easy to use for the beginner or advance shooter. Has a very comfortable had grip and the size of the camera is small and can fit in your back pocket almost. All in all this camera is great. The digital stills that this camera takes are the best I have seen in a camcorder to date.
The there are only a few things that turn me off about the camera. If you are in a somewhat dark room and the sun or light is coming in from a window the image you are shooting is really dark and the camera can not seem to auto adjust good enough. Also if you have a MAC computer the software that comes with the camera does not work well at all. You will have to fork out another 45.00 like I did for Voltaic HD video converter. Other than those few things the camera is great purchase for the price too.

As a high school theatre teacher I am constantly using a video camera to record all of the projects we do. I got tried of using my old camera and having to buy mini DV tapes. This camera does everything my old one did, and without the tape issue. It has a mic input which gives me better sound quality than anything I have previously used. It is a good camera for someone who wants professional quality without the huge expense. Very easy to use.

Absolute novice when it comes to recent video technology. After reading the inst. manual I was shooting high def. like a pro. This camera is so easy to use I don't understand anybodys review that is less than 5 stars. Menus and sub-menus very intuitive to use. As is the included computer programs for editing and copying to blue ray or other hi-def. mediums. If your looking for a HD video recorder that is top of the line (for this price range) look no further. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPPOINTED. Thank B&H
