The 17" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer from Apple is a powerful notebook computer with an innovative aluminum unibody design. It is loaded with advanced power management features, including an intelligent hybrid graphics system, which allow it to run for up to 9 hours on a single charge.
The computer's 17" display features a LED backlight and a glossy finish. Its 1920 x 1200 native resolution gives you ample screen real estate with which to work -- its resolution is greater than that of 1080p HD video. You'll be able to output to an external display at up to 2560 x 1600 resolution thanks to the computer's Mini DisplayPort output.
The system is powered by a 2.53GHz Intel Core i5 and is loaded with 4GB of memory and a 500GB 5400rpm hard drive. The CPU can be overclocked to 3.06GHz using the Turbo Boost system. Graphics are handled by a hybrid system, which includes a discrete nVIDIA GeForce GT 330M GPU with 512MB of GDDR3 memory and integrated Intel HD graphics. The computer automatically switches between the two GPUs to best handle the task at hand, perfectly balancing performance and power consumption.
The computer features a comfortable backlit chiclet-style keyboard, which features space between each key for improved accuracy and comfort when typing. It also sports a glass Multi-Touch trackpad with a clickable design. Rather than having a separate button for mouse clicks, the entire surface of the pad is clickable. This increases the active surface area, and allows you to quickly click, even if your finger is near the top of the trackpad.
What's more, the smooth surface fully supports Multi-Touch gestures -- you can tap the trackpad with one finger to click, with two fingers to right click, scroll through documents using two fingers, pinch to zoom, navigate through Safari or iPhoto with three-finger left and right swipes, or use two fingers to rotate a photo or PDF.
iLife '11, a complete suite of digital creativity applications, is installed on the system. Easy enough for anyone to use, iLife will help you edit your home movies, organize digital photos, and compose original music.
The computer is loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system. The 64-bit OS features Time Machine backup, which automatically backs up system data to an external hard drive. It also features intuitive Cover Flow navigation, the powerful Spotlight search tool, and Quick Look document preview. You'll be able to use Boot Camp to run Windows on your Mac, or Front Row to turn your Mac into an impressive media player.

This machine is predominately used for development where the resolution of the screen is paramount and the ability to support simultaneous mainstream operating systems is key.
As a long term user of high-end windows laptops I didn't expect there to be much difference between the MacBook Pro and the current leading Window laptops; I was wrong.
The MacBook Pro 17 screen, keyboard, track pad, battery life and surprisingly small and light for a 17" laptop, all results in the MacBook Pro 17 being a joy to use and undoubtedly the best laptop I've ever owned.
Coupled with the included copy of Parallels and optional memory upgrade to 8 Gb of RAM, the MacBook Pro 17 is great for development and testing for the Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and other platforms.
The only negative aspect of the machine is the hard disk, compared to the rest of the machine it is sluggish and therefore will be upgraded to a SSD or a hybrid drive in the coming months.
Also get a neoprene case to protect the beautiful case from scratches and knocks when on the move.

I should've done this a long time ago. Like they say, "You get what you pay for". The money spent was well worth the satisfaction I'm getting from my Mac. PC No More!

Comments about Apple 17" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer:
This is the best computer that I have ever had, and I waited until the new MacBook pro with thunderbolt was released, so this one would be cheaper. And it was totally worth it!! A $600 price deduction is really amazing for just one generation of an old product! It is beautiful too! The moment that you take it out of the box, you can immediately tell that it was ingeniously engineered. The sleek aluminum body feels just right and most of all, because it is all one unibody, it is extremely light weight compared to a clunky, slow, plastic PC. Buy this computer!!!!!

After years of debating I switched from PC to Mac. I now understand why people like these machines. They are easier to understand and operate. I did have a problem with the optical drive but Apple store replaced in less than 24 hrs. So all in all I love the machine.

Comments about Apple 17" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer:
I bought this product and discovered to my dismay that the resolution on this computer is so high that all the text for the operating system and programs is way too small to see. And, it can not be changed (multiple trips to Apple Store and calls to Apple). [...]I had to sell this privately at a loss to get the 15 inch model which has lower resolution and a more readable screen. Great computer, just make sure you can handle the small print on the high-res screen.

It's been a bit of a learning curve moving from a Windows platform to a Mac platform, and finding applications to replace those I use on my Windows laptop has been somewhat frustrating, but I'm quite happy with my Macbook Pro. It's actually easy to use, boots up quick and is much quieter than my Windows laptop. [...]

This is by far the best made 17" laptop yet. The casework is precision made and feels as solid as a rock. Just a delight to use.
The illuminated keyboard works really well. Much better than I have been previously used to.
Speed is great for all my applications. I use CAD and other fairly complex programs and all are fine.
The upgrade from my previous model was the easiest yet.
The only minor issue I've noticed is the lack of an "enter" key on this model. Once I worked out that it is replaced by a key combination (function+return), I'm dealing with it okay.

Comments about Apple 17" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer:
What can you say. It's a Mac. It's sleek. The image clarity leaves PC Laptop users pining (because they bought a "cheap" unit -- get what you pay for). The open and close is so smooth and tight. Glare can be bothersome at times but not a huge issue. Unit runs Aperture and Photoshop CS5 without a hitch. 4G Ram seems to be enough but a memory upgrade could possibly do it some good -- as well as a SSD drive (increase access time greatly from the 5400 RPM standard drive).

Comments about Apple 17" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer:
Every time I buy a new Mac (i've bought about 10 since the 90's) I wonder why I'm paying 2 or 3 times what a Windows system would cost. Then I open the box and start up the Mac - and that's when I know why I paid a premium --- to have the best gear on the planet. Yes, a Hyundai will get you where you're going just as well as a Porsche - but the ride is so much better in the Porsche. Same for the Mac. I will have my new 17" laptop for at least 5 years and it will be a great ride every day. And when I go to sell it in 5 years - it will still have good resale value. What's a 5 year old Windows laptop worth ????

Comments about Apple 17" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer:
This computer is simply amazing. This is my first Apply computer. You can tell right as it comes out of the box that the engineering surpasses that of PCs. For example, the power cord is attached to the unit with a magnet so, if someone trips over it, your motherboard does not get destroyed.
I finally got sick of PC annoyances and make the big switch. The final blow came when I went to the Microsoft web site explaining the advantage of PC over Mac and I saw how lame they were.
The most striking thing about the computer is its display. It is simply beautiful. The down side is that I can no longer stand the jagged letters on my work PC. PC makers as skimping on graphics for lower prices. My previous 17" notebook had a 1600x1200 display. The highest resolution you can easily find now is 1600x700.
This Mac is big. It is more of a mobile office than a lightweight traveler. That said, it is significantly lighter than the 17" PC Notebook it replaced.
I spent about $600 more for this computer than I would have paid for the few PCs that I could find that were remotely comparable. This machine is so much better that the $600 is well worth it.
The only problem I have had was that one game would lock up the system. This problem was easily resolved. Other than that the system has been smooth. The system always responds to user input, unlike a PC.
The system is much cooler than my PCs and much quieter.
The general polish of the system utilities is much higher than that on Windows. The Safari Web browser blows away Mozilla and Internet Exploder. You don't find any utilities or system settings whose interface looks like they slipped through QA with no one looking.
The down side is the need to reinvest in software. I plan to do this over time as upgrades.

The machine is great...especially after I replaced the hard drive with an SSD and upgrading the RAM. But even without those modifications, it's great. It's gorgeous, fast, and doesn't appear and weigh as much as you would think, for a screen that size.
