Extremely nice color for my photography and video work. I do not use this monitor professionally, but in my view, this monitor is the cat's meow. I set it to Adobe RGB color space, then ran a calibration with Spider3 hardware. There was almost no difference in the before and after views in the Spider software after the calibration. That's an A+ for the monitor in my book.
The monitor puts out considerably more heat than my 23" Apple Cinema Display did. But, the recently discontinued Apple 30" puts out even more heat than this monitor, according to the specs. duh...this is a 27" monitor.
This monitor weighs in at 30 pounds. I guess I've come to the conclusion that the high end displays are all beefy. I would suppose it's because there's a lot more robust equipment inside that controls the even illumination and amazing color.
Now that Apple is out of the desktop display business, I can highly recommend this NEC PA271W for photo and video work.

This is a great monitor for general editing and light composition work.
/// however - if you are one of the few people who can see the anti-glare coating material : then this monitor is not for you. ( looks like noise in the highlight areas ) This monitor is not for high end skin retouching simply due to this physical attribute.
For general use - it's fantastic.

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA271W-BK 27" Widescreen LCD Computer Display (Black):
Great color, contrast and evenness. Sadly it doesn't come with a hood after you spend 30-50% more than other 27" monitors.

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA271W-BK 27" Widescreen LCD Computer Display (Black):
I have a photography studio with 4 workstations. I cannot afford an EIZO for each, this is a nice compromise. Although the 97% AdobeRGB colorspace is rather wishful thinking, the display can be used for color accurate work like retouching.
One thing you are not being told is that you will need the Spectra View II software in order to calibrate this Display. This is not abnormal, every manufacturer has their own calibrating software to work with their own LUT tables, but it's another $150 in case you are counting.

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA271W-BK 27" Widescreen LCD Computer Display (Black):
Have had this monitor for about 3 weeks. This is One Great LCD Screen. I will admit I have never been a fan of LCD minitors and always have used large screen Pro CRT screens. This monitor has changed my mind.[...] No dead pixels, easy set up, solid build, solid adjustable stand, and Great Color.I use this for critical Photoshop work as well as everyday computing and games. Even running the old Win 98 Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator the screen does a good job of displaying the lower resolution graphics. If you have the bucks and are looking at this monitor BUY IT. It will not disappoint in any way. The 27" size is just about perfect and the 2560 X 1440 resolution is a nice match for the GTX 580 video card.

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA271W-BK 27" Widescreen LCD Computer Display (Black):
Great color rendition, good full size monitor and sharp, clear and full featured. The only thing I did not expect was the necessity of using the provided DVI cable. The provided cable uses the full array of pins so you will have to replace your existing cable with the one from the box (no problem, though, it is long enough for most applications).

I'm a serious amateur photographer and use Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3.4.1.
The monitor matches my Epson 2200 printer well enough that I haven't even bothered to calibrate with my Spyder.

This is an upgrade from the also excellent NEC PA241W (in the interest of more real estate and higher resolution). Delivers the same stellar performance, but more of it. Used for digital photo editing it delivers an amazing range of color and contrast, combined with the unbelievable SpectraView II calibration software to ensure I'm working in an accurate environment. Wouldn't hesitate recommending this or the PA241W to anyone who is serious about their photography and editing.

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA271W-BK 27" Widescreen LCD Computer Display (Black):
What's great:
1. Nice big canvas
2. Raises and lowers quite a ways
3. Dual inputs, including dual usb uplink
4. Quality color for a decent price
What't not so great:
1. I wish it was 16x10, not 16x9.
2. If you have an eizo eye-1, prepare to work a little to get accurate color.
3. A couple more usb ports would be nice, but it's not a huge deal.
How I use it:
Maya and after effects on the PC, Photoshop on the Mac. Both through the same monitor.
Ideal for people needing accurate color (photographers, visual effects artists, video editors) but don't want to drop the extra money on an Eizo.

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA271W-BK 27" Widescreen LCD Computer Display (Black):
I have two other wide gamut monitors (Samsung 245Ts). For film work I wanted a monitor with 2560 horizontal pixels so I could view 2K images at 100%. While initially I considered a 30" monitor, the price for this 27" was much nicer, though the vertical resolution was not as large as the 30" (which is 1600).
I believe the 30" would be a better match with the two Samsungs as the relative pixel size is a closer match - with the 271, the pixels are smaller relative to the two Samsungs (The PA271 is the center monitor, with the Samsungs on the left and right).
One of the advantages of the PA271 is that you can create a number of different LUTs (profiles) that you load directly in the monitor and recall on demand, so that you don't have to spend time in a length recalibration to go from sRGB to Adobe RGB to DCI/P3 (at true 16 ft/Lamberts), etc etc.
On the other hand, using an EyeOne Display 2, and trying several software packages including BasICColor, EyeOne, ColorEyes, and Spectraview, I was unable to precisely adjust the two Samsungs and the NEC to match in middle grey. I think this is more of an issue with the Samsungs though, as I did a series of perceptual Gamma tests and found that the NEC was very accurate in the calibrated gamma, while the Samsungs seemed to calibrate/profile at a slightly higher gamma (and slightly warmer) for reasons I have yet to determine.
The fact it is 16x9 and not 16x10 makes it less useful as a "main" screen as a 16x10 monitor has room for the computers's menu bar/tool bar AND a full screen 16x9 image at the same time.
There is not a "built in" rec709 profile, though there is sRGB. However, you can load custom gamma curse so it should be possible to take the sRGB and put the rec709 gamma curve on it. And while there are no HDMI inputs, there are two DVI-D inputs with HDCP, so a simple adapter can fill that need.
While I wish it had more than 3 USB ports, it does have two separate USB in-ports, that can be assigned to different DVI/Display port inputs, so it becomes a KVM switcher if you are using it with two computers.
My use: I am using this monitor as my primary color reference for photography, film/video, and general design work.
Notes:
For Web work, use the 'sRGB" profile for accurate browser appearance. Browsers do not display untagged images and web colors accurately on wide gamut monitors - but this monitor can be easily set to the standard sRGB gamut for web design work.
For film/video work, use a profile that matches your *working space* for minimal interpolation errors with the video application.

I thought long and hard about a [$] monitor. Without a good calibrated monitor you are not going to get good prints. This NEC monitor meets and exceeds my expectations and works well with the other components of my system, a $10,000 WS and a $5,000 Epson printer. The monitor is perfectly calibrated and is combined with Colorburst Pro. a $1,500 printing SW program. So the cost of a good monitor is not so much when you consider the importance it plays in the end result. This monitor is well built and a joy to use.

I am using this monitor for photography and i love it. Excellent calibration results. Plenty of real estate for working with images, either in lanscape or portrait modes. The colors are beautiful, even the blacks (i work in a dim environment and the blacks look beautiful). Incredibly heavy. This is one puppy i will not want to move often, even with the integrated handle on the monitor.

Bought this one to use with my Mac pro,it has sturdy build, pivoting feature makes portrait images look their best, color looks good after calibration with Spider 3 express,if you try to find some installation infos for this monitor you are out of luck, you are on your own or rely on some customer reviews to help you to start with.Bad thing came down when I turned off the monitor with on/off button and then turned it back on,it refused to turn on.several attempts plug/unplug to boot it up but nothing happened.I returned this defective monitor to B&H [...]I might have had a bad luck but this expensive monitor shouldn't have had this kind of a problem IMHO.

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA271W-BK 27" Widescreen LCD Computer Display (Black):
This monitor comes out of the box with terrible hurdles to overcome.
First, the documentation could not be any worse if you tried to make the worst possible documentation possible.
Second, the DVI plug is a DVI digital, making it totally of no effect with anything analog you may own (like VGA). There are no adapters available and it seems to put you in a position where you are faced on buying a new video card or you out of luck.
There is no mention of how to connect up this monitor if you are connecting to 1 connection. Same goes if you wanted to use the KVM part of it, no help, no clues, you figure it out yourself like if you bought it at a flea market.
I purchased this for myself right here on B&H. B&H is not at fault in any of this, it clearly is a case of a manufacturer totally disconnected with it's end user almost like an incomplete product still in the designing stages.
You will like this if you know exactly what you are doing, what you are buying, and have the connections planned down in your head.
You will not like this if you simply wanted to buy one of the best monitors out there and expected them to cover the bases for you. When you buy this there is no hand holding or even explanations on what goes where or how to use it. you will have bought something great, but figure out how to connect it and use it without any help from it's maker.

I debated for a long time about which screen to get. I own a MacPro, April 2009, and am a semi-pro, with work in web design and photography, plus web surfing.
I was going to hold out for the Apple 27" LED based screen, but got this instead.
I've had some issues getting the DisplayPort connection working to perfection - while it works (using a MiniDP to DP cord), the monitor does not sleep properly (on the waking up end). The monitor works flawlessly using the DVI cable.
The color on this screen is rich - deeper, richer color than I had had previously using a 24" Samsung 245T.
Very bright, as well. Am keeping mine at the 200 cdm setting.
