The Alpha NEX-5 is one of several digital cameras in my collection that includes a Leica fixed-lens rangefinder and a Nikon D3.
This camera is a marvel in it's menu of options. Set-up is extremely easy, so easy in fact, that one can make choices without ever looking at the instruction book. Though I have not had time to experiment with many aspects, these are some that I really like:
• Sharp,highlighted screen which can be set with all kinds of assists in functions;
• Panorama function;
• size; though it tends to be a bit heavy, it is so much lighter than a normal size SLR with comparable lenses, making this camera easy to carry (a must for me, since I can no longer haul my huge camera bag;
•Memory Card Tool, allows me to arrange photos or title folders, especially helpful for travel;
•Instructions can be set to appear on screen, most helpful for a new user;
• Background De-Focus, the function of which is accessible by turning the joy-stick wheel;
• The flash is very acceptable, must moreso than one of my other digital (rather high-end) cameras of this type.
• I fits in my purse :-).
• I'm experimenting with Color Space. Appears interesting, but have not had enough time to comment fully.
• Playback enlargement
Negatives:
I have only two, and they are not critical issues. (1) The shutter is a bit noisy, but I haven't compared it with my SLRs as yet. (2) The on-off switch and the shutter should be reversed. It feels a little awkward to access the shutter by putting one's finger over the on-off switch. Again, I'll get used to it.
I have gone from a Brownie Box camera, through range-rinders, twin-lens relfex, press cameras, SLRs (film and digital) and this, in my opinion make experimenting a whole lot of fun because of its ease. With all the positives (and I'm sure I'll find many more to love), I can get by with that.

Apparently you have to send your NEW camera back to Sony for service if the camera exhibits this clicking noise. Sony is aware of the problem, but has not given guidance on next steps other than sending in your camera

This is my first digital camera, so I made sure to read as many reviews and research many different brands before making my decision. Since I'm not savvy at digital, I wanted to make sure it was of decent quality and still user friendly. I got both in this camera. There are so many features that it will take me awhile to master this camera, but I feel confident I made the right choice.

Generally speaking, it's a good product. Compare to GF2 or E-PL3, it has much better picture quality, especially in high ISO condition. But it lacks internal flash light and internal viewfinder, which are the major defects for this camera.

I've had this camera a few weeks now and I must say I am very impressed with it. Unilke point and shoots, it is ready to take photos in quick succession and the low light capbility is fantatic as is the HD video. I wanted to move up from point and shoots to an SLR but never wanted to lug one around. I am taking this baby to Itlay next week and feel confident it will be easy to take with me wherever I go.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5 Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera w/18-55mm Lens (Silver):
In preparing for a big European vacation cruise, I wanted to pack much lighter and taking a DSLR with a megazoom was not fitting into my plans. So I decided to go with the Sony Nex 5 and something strange happened. I bought the Nex 5 and the kit (18-55mm) lens as well as the 16mm f/2.8 pancake lens and after testing it out, I haven't taken the 16mm lens off of the body. I got into the mindset of taking 16mm shots and when you stop down to F/22 the details are magnificent. And the corners aren't bad at f/2.8. After some testing, I brought only the 16mm lens. Overall, I have only used the kit lens for about a dozen shots and shot a few thousand with the 16mm lens. One good bit of warning though, there is not a mirror in the way of the sensor, so if you swap lenses you're looking at dust and those 16mm f/22 shots are going to show it. A hurricane blower and sensor swabs are nearly mandatory for lens swapping. The system needs more lenses, but the LA-EA1 adapter is a good band-aid for those who have Sony Alpha lenses. Some of the lenses look ridiculous on the Nex, but some like the 50mm f/1.8 or the 30mm f/2.8 macro work well. With the latest firmware updates, AF works seamlessly with the adapter and the panoramic shooting mode is much better. The firmware upgrade also adds in some creative shooting modes (B/W, Colors, Toy Camera, Old Camera) that are interesting, to say the least.

Love this camera for ability to capture great panoramas, easy to program for special uses, or ability to use an automatic setting. Great in low light. The program feature is wonderful and allows me to take specific settings consistently in a similar situation without readusting settings. On the con side: lcd screen almost useless in bright sunlight. I purchased the optional viewfinder, but since it does not work with camera and only allows viewing, it is not helpful in composition.

Absolutely love this camera!!!! The picture quality is outstanding, and it's very easy to use. The only thing that I am trying to get use to is not having the view finder, but everything else could not be better.
I love taking pictures of my children and family, great camera along with great memories.

I am a casual photographer looking to move away from the super-compact point and shoots, so I decided to get this Sony NEX-5 because it is really simple to use - no complicated settings.
I can set it up manually if i want, but usually the intelligent mode is great for the majority of the times.
I was disappointed with the limited zoom range though... For a lens that is big i expected something more powerful.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5 Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera w/18-55mm Lens (Silver):
I've been teaching myself photography for a while, so I bought the NEX-5 both to level up and to capture my trip to Australia. I was usually running in Program (semi-manual) or Shutter priority modes and it performed beautifully! The NEX takes stunning shots, yet is small enough that you won't feel like you're carrying around that giant hair dryer from Spaceballs. Note: Make sure to upgrade to the latest firmware to get the full feature set and quick config access!
How I love thee, let me count the ways:
* Good weight/size and solid construction, a pleasure to use.
* LCD screen tilts up/down. Great for down low or overhead (or over-the-fence) shots.
* Instant panorama mode with two sizes in any direction. (Also 3D panorama support but I haven't tried it.)
* Low-light steady-shot mode. Flash included but thankfully almost never need it.
* Instant HDR photos. Not the quality you'd get from manual bracketing and photo software (you can do that too), but it has your back in scenes with tricky lighting.
* Dedicated movie record button when you need to quickly capture some action (in full HD, no less).
* Love having autofocus that I can manually adjust to perfection as I take a shot.
Needs imporovement:
* Battery life is OK, but could be better. I bought a knock-off backup battery for cheap, which is good to have for long shooting days, cuz if you like to take your time to configure shots you will run out of juice.
* Autofocus lags sometimes in movie mode, though you can force it with the shutter button. Also no way to just pause recording, have to stop and start a new movie clip.
* Not enough zoom with 18-55 lens at times, but you could get a better lens.
* The software that comes with the camera is pretty useless.
In summary... Despite some nits, this is one of the best cameras that a photo-savvy traveller can have. It's a great companion and kind of a head turner.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5 Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera w/18-55mm Lens (Silver):
I have a large DSLR system (Sony A-900 & lenses) w which I shoot mostly fine art landscapes. I wanted something smaller and lighter to take on long hikes, but wanted the resolution and flexibility (interchangeable lenses) that I currently have. I have also begun experimenting with adding video to some of my slide shows, and wanted an HD solution. 14 MP is enough res (the A-900 has 24). The video is fabulous, and the camera has exceeded expectations. I have read that the learning curve for the camera adjustments (ISO, WB, shooting modes, etc) is steep. If you are stepping up from a point & shoot, that may be the case, but when stepping down from a full-featured DSLR it is quite easy. It is true that making changes on the fly aren't as fast as with my big rig, but the more I use it the faster I get. I now take this camera everywhere - it's always in my car and with me. My pictures and video so far have been very good. Mirror-less cameras have no viewfinder, but I adjusted very quickly. Early on I had a tendency to compose and shoot and then move the camera too fast, causing some blurring, but realizing my error I have corrected this. The two major obstacles with these types of cameras that i see (probably not just the NEX-5) relate to focus and seeing the screen. The auto focus works well, even with video, but a slight movement of the camera during a video shoot might cause the focus to change to another object in the distance, resulting in loss of focus in the near field. I so far have found that using manual focus (which is more appropriate for video) requires looking closely at the screen image, which is made more difficult in full sun. I like the two lenses I purchased with the NEX-5 and all in all I am very happy. 14 MP, light weight, HD video, panorama capabilities - what's not to like?

I have been looking for a camera for maybe 2 month before I bought this one. (reading reviews, comparing features and photos samples, etc) I am not disappointed.
The first negative critic about this camera is the price, people saying that it is as expensive as a full DSLR without being one. True, but the thing is that you don't find the same features nor the same picture quality in a SLR for less than $800.
Another down is the complicity of the menu. Well, it's complicated. A Lamborghini is more complicated to drive than a Honda Civic... But you get used to it!
Bottom line: picture quality, features, high ISO deserve a A+.

I bought this camera for use with the Nauticam Housing. and I must say that I'm super impressed. The camera has lightning fast speeds and all the functionality that you would find in a DSLR with all the conveniences of a Point-n-Shoot. The menus are a little cumbersome to get around in but the size more than makes up for the menu issue as it rivals the smaller PnS camera's in size. Forget about the Canon G12 as the sensor on this camera is gigantic by comparison. I'm very happy that I made the decision to but the Nex-5!

We had bought a T1i for my wife to use when we were on vacation and found that she often avoided taking it on outings due to the large size. I sold that camera and purchased her this just before going on a vacation.
Wow!
We loved it, we used it everywhere and rarely brought out my DSLR after the first few days. The image quality is great, the camera is light and comfortable to carry and the UI is very intuitive. The only negative that we noticed was battery life due, so we carried 2 spare batteries and we could take 1000+ photos easy.
We're planning on buying at least one more of these in the near future and are very happy with it.
